Guest Kingpk Report post Posted December 15, 2002 Making ND his bitch put him over the top, I guess. Congrats. May he not go to the Bengals.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 15, 2002 Palmer deserved it. He's gotta be the first NFL type QB to win the Heisman.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted December 15, 2002 He's gotta be the first NFL type QB to win the Heisman. Vinny Testaverde Jim Plunkett Roger Staubach Doug Flutie ...all also won the Heisman Previous winners
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted December 15, 2002 Torching Notre Dame won it for him...
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 15, 2002 I was refering to the Big Strong Armed QB. Flutie and Staubach weren't like that.
Guest Kenju Matsuki Report post Posted December 15, 2002 Making ND his bitch IS what won him the Heisman. I'm not knocking Palmer because he did have a great season, at least Dorsey didn't win it, but the best QB throughout the entire season was Brad Banks... and it's rather shitty that Carson Palmer won the Heisman on 1 game basically... like Mark May says. The best players this year were Banks and Johnson... but it's not like the Heisman means a damn thing anymore, anyway.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted December 15, 2002 Funny that on ESPN Classic they chose to show USC/Oregon (Palmer threw for 448 yards and five scores) rather than the USC/Notre Dame game that probably won him the Heisman. As for the one game comment, the ND game was the capper on an amazing two months that Palmer had that catapulted USC back into the national spotlight, so while obviously the ND game may have won him the trophy, it isn't like that was a fluke performance or anything. It just took him five years to finally live up to his potential. Here's a tidbit - I was reading the article and it mentioned that 88% of the Heisman ballots were turned in, up from 80% last year. To those 12% - WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU? I WOULD GIVE MY LEFT AND RIGHT TESTICLE TO BE A HEISMAN VOTER!!!! DAMN IT, PUT ASIDE WHATEVER IS KEEPING YOU BUSY AND VOTE DAMMIT!!! OK I'm calm now. Second was Brad Banks, then Larry Johnson, McGahee, Dorsey, Leftwich, Gesser, Chris Brown, Kliff Kingsbury and Quentin Griffin.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted December 15, 2002 I guess six TDs against VT doesn't mean anything, as long as we're talking about one-game performances that might have swung the vote... My vote would've gone to McGahee. But since the Heisman could accurately be renamed The Best Player Receiving A Lot Of Hype While Playing For A Big School Award, what does it really matter anymore? It's like getting an Oscar these days.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 15, 2002 McGahee's only a Soph Dr. they don't win the award. Plus he's only a RB. Johnson was all stats. It's an unwritten that you have to perform in your teams big games. Johnson didn't. Banks was good but the schedule Iowa faced wasn't half has impressive as USC. Dorsey was down from last year. He would of been more deserving than Eric Crouch who won last year. Carson Palmer. Was clearly deserving. The Notre Dame game was the first nationally televised game since Auburn early in the year. Palmer put up great numbers and lead USC to a 10-2 records playing the toughest schedule in College Football.
Guest Rabbi_wilson13 Report post Posted December 15, 2002 Carson Palmer's stats in the two losses made LJ and Bank's bad games look golden. Shoulda gone to a Big Ten player, but Carson was my third pick, because I'm ecstatic a Miami bum didn't get it. When you're playing on a team like that and can't put up monster numbers, I don't care what your record is or how many 1 yard TD's you score.
Guest Bricks Report post Posted December 16, 2002 I wanted McGahee to win. But as a USC fan, I'm happy Palmer won. Although, I'm not going to be happy when the Bengals pick him. He'll be a bust, and it won't even be his fault. Anyways, I'm tired of the "you can't win when you're a soph" logic that a lot of the voters have. If you're the best player in that year, then you should win. So say next year if someone like Maurice Clarett dominates, then he should win instead of some senior who had a great career. Guest DrTom Report post Posted December 16, 2002 McGahee's only a Soph Dr. they don't win the award. Plus he's only a RB. If he's the best player, then he's the best player, and what year of eligibility he's in shouldn't matter. The problem is, the Heisman has politics in the voting, too, so a soph winning means there might be a chance he could (gasp!) win it again! And you KNOW we can't have someone be the best player in college two years in a row... Like I said, it's just like winning a goddamn Oscar nowadays.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 16, 2002 Shoulda gone to a Big Ten player, Is that because you think the Big 10 is better than the Pac 10 or Banks and Johnson had better years than Palmer?
