Guest Youth N Asia Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Thursday, Josh Matthews (Tough Enough 1 loser) did a backstage interview segment for Smackdown, good for him. This morning I caught a few minutes of Afterburn (which I never do)...and Josh now seems to host that show. Then a minute ago I passed by Velocity, and who's doing commentary? JOSH F'N MATTHEWS! And there were a few fumbles, but overall not a bad job (didn't help that Miller was his sidekick) Man...why even win Tough Enough when they give the top 4 finishers spots in the company. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against the kid, he seems alright to me.
Guest CanadianChick Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Don't forget he is still pimping house shows for us Canadians. "What's crackin' Canada?"
Guest The Electrifyer Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 And sometimes, he'll slip in, "What's POPPIN', Canada?"
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Thanks for giving HHH an idea.. This coming monday after HHH wins the title.. Jim Ross: Well it is somewhat of a pleasure or misfortune depending on how you feel about him, to welcome HHH to the broadcast booth for tonights RAW... HHH: Hopefully-uh, I will get the full time job, I can wrestle and commentate-uh my match at the same time cause Im the game-uh..
Guest CanadianChick Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 How could I forget? What's next? "What's Snappin' Canada?"
Guest Takedown Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Personally, I think Josh is doing a fucking awesome job as commentator, MUCH better than Mark Lloyd or Jerry Lawler (especially for not commentating before) and is not as annoyingly gay as Michael Cole. "The Cat" is god awfully horrible though...the worst is how he stalls for about 6 seconds when Josh (or Cole, when he was on Smackdown) asks him something, and then says something stupid.

Josh is doing a damn good job for being as new as he is. But his introductions to when he is pimpin house shows are hilarious. Oh yeah....Cat sucks.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Wish I lived in Canada so I could see them. Like I said, he messed up a couple times, but overall pretty impressive for someone that new to the gig. And I hate Cole on Velocity...seems like when he works with someone who's a lesser name them him (Mark Loyd) he comes off as kind of a smart ass bully, almost like he's too good to work with the guy...kinda funny being Michael Cole and all
Guest DJ Jeff Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Josh Matthews > HHH It's the truth, you know.
Guest treble charged Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Josh Matthews pales in comparison to his predecesors when pimping live events to the Canadian audience. Sure, he may be better than Kevin Kelly and the Coach, but nothing, and I mean NOTHING will compare to Dok Hendrik's 'Helllllllllllllllllllllllo Canada'. Josh is pretty good, though, if just for his intros, which rate pretty high on the 'unintentionally funny scale'.
Guest The Electrifyer Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Dok Hendrix was the best at those little promos. No one can match his greatness when pimping those live events. The studio he had, with the big picture of him smiling, kinda evilish, was cool too.
Guest treble charged Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 You could always count on the Slam Jam starting with, 'Hellllllllllllllllllooooo Canada, this is Handsome Dok Hendrix giving you the 411'. Helped me get through many a lonely Monday night, let me tell you.
Guest SuperTonyJaymz Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Josh Matthews i probably their 3rd best commnetatotr right now. Better han Jr and Lawer in my opinion.
Guest AndrewTS Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Josh Matthews i probably their 3rd best commnetatotr right now. Better han Jr and Lawer in my opinion. JR and Lawler...eeeeeeeeehh....
Guest TheArchiteck Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 He was HIGHLY annoying at first...but I got used to him. Josh- So Cat, you working on your yellow belt now? Cat- Hahaha, kid don't make me kick yo' ass ringside now. That was too funny. The Cat wasn't that great tonight...wonder what was up. Sounded like he was reading off index cards. He's still the greatest though.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 This was the furst time I've seen Matthews commentate, and I must say that he was not bad at all. Good work, young Joshua.
Guest Slapnuts00 Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 I only caught the last part of the Kidman/Chavo match on Velocity but I liked Josh. Even though he has to stick to the standard WWE style of commentating, he threw in more move names than JR or Cole, was almost getting a Joey Styles vibe...
Guest Tod deKindes Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 HHH: Hopefully-uh, I will get the full time job, I can wrestle and commentate-uh my match at the same time cause Im the game-uh.. Jerry Lawler was the best at doing that.
Guest art_vandelay Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 I liked Josh on TE, but I just HATE his Slam Jam segments. I lost respect for him due to his whoring of himself to get employed by the company. However, that changed tonight, right at the moment when he called Funaki's sit-out inverted powerbomb a "SIT-OUT INVERTED POWERBOMB!!!" Not only that, but when he isn't shilling (I don't blame him for that), he seems to add a good deal of excitement and focus onto the matches. The Cat is absolutely hysterical when he's rambling about James Brown music, karate gi's and red shoes, but when he's colour commentating, he can't seem to say anything that doesn't sound like it was either written down on a piece of paper, or told by somebody else through a set of head phones. He's not as bad as Jacqueline, but there are similarities, such as short meaningless statements pointing out the obvious (e.g. "(Wrestler) is really tough!", "Kurt Angle loves competition.") But I really did like all the WCW references he made tonight. I think he'd be much better if he didn't have anyone feeding him lines to say. I hope Josh's arrival means the end of Mark Loyd like it was for Chris Leary when he arrived. It's about time they got announcers that actually know something about wrestling.
Guest The Electrifyer Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 When Josh called it the "sit-out inverted powerbomb", I was pretty damn amazed too. I hope he keeps naming the actual names of the moves and speaks just a bit louder.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 It's funny, Mathews knew the names of the wrestlers and the moves - why can't the other announcers do this? When Velocity started, I said to my buddy, "is that josh mathews' voice - oh this is gonna suck'. I was pleasantly surprised. The cat was even tolerable simply because of the 'odd couple' nature of him and mathews (mathews being even whiter than cole and llyod put together).
Guest RenegadeX28 Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Hmmmmm...I haven't seen Velocity in a while. I didn't even know he announced there! No wonder he has been appearing on WWE TV lately.
Guest dreamer420 Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 You could always count on the Slam Jam starting with, 'Hellllllllllllllllllooooo Canada, this is Handsome Dok Hendrix giving you the 411'. Helped me get through many a lonely Monday night, let me tell you. Damn I miss that too. Too bad the Dok Hendrix gimmick got dropped by Hayes as he made a few appearances on Raw and PPV's as well. I think he even color commentated a PPV with Vince once.
Guest Slapnuts00 Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 It's funny, Mathews knew the names of the wrestlers and the moves - why can't the other announcers do this? Because, Josh is a wrestling fan just like us and pays attention to such things. Guys like Cole or Coach have no wrestling background, they were news or sports broadcasters. As for JR he's just become lazy and senile I guess, cuz back when he did NWA and midnineties WWF he was great...
Guest EricMM Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 They should put Josh on SD! and let Cole go back to what he's really good at. Making promotional videos!!! I swear if I could just watch those, I would be a pure fan again. THey're so good!
Guest SP-1 Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 I liked Matthews work. It gave me an old school kind of vibe. To me, Cat sounded like he was actually kinda agitated or angry or something. He didn't sound happy.
Guest blachuuh_monkey Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Dok Hendrix did commentary with Vince Mcmahon at 1995 Summerslam
Guest The Hollywood Fashion Plate Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 Didn't Dok also work at IYH 1?

Thank goodness Rock rips them new ones. Josh is a wrestling fan, who knows what he's talking about. I'm shocked that he mentioned the Radicalz' jumping from WCW.

I don't see how Dunn is to blame for the WWE having some crappy announcers. He is a producer who I doubt does the hiring.
