So the Bengals have the No. 1 pick...

Unless something miraculous happens, the Cincinnati Bengals will have the first pick in the 2003 NFL Draft. Who should they take? The candidates, IMO:

Byron Leftwitch, QB, Marshall: Probably the best pro prospect at QB. Reminds me of Daunte Culpepper. I'd take him, but I like Leftwitch and don't wanna see him saddled with the Bengals.

Charles Rogers, WR, Michigan State: The Peter Warrick experiment ain't working out, and no matter who Cincy's QB is, he needs someone to throw to.

Carson Palmer, QB, USC: Ranked ahead of Leftwitch by some. But remember that this guy was only so-so for three years before breaking out this year. Plus, he won the Heisman. He has "NFL Bust" written all over him. Which pretty much guarentees the Bengals will take him.

One of Miami's defensive lineman: Admittedly I don't know one from the other. But I do know all four of them are first-round NFL picks. and Cincy did take DT Dan Wilkinson with the 1st pick a few years ago.

But my favorite...Chris Simms, QB, Texas: Seeing as these are the Bengals, I wouldn't be surprised if they skipped Palmer and took someone even worse, like Simms or Ken Dorsey. Can't you see it?

Cincy front-office guy: "Simms has pedigree! He's a lefty, like Boomer was! He's blond and marketable! That's our man!"

We should trade it. The two things we really need is a run stopper and a shut down corner. A trade in with someone that would get us two first round picks are what we need more then anything else.

We don't need another WR. Peter Warrick isn't acheiving as expected but Chad Johnson is over acheiving all our receivers are young give them afew more years before another young guy who needs a dew years is brought in.

Kitna is decent. Since he took over after the Gus and Akili debacles the offense has been fine most weeks.

Any D that lets the Panthers put up almost 60 is what needs to be addressed. They can survive with Dillon and Johnson maybe take a WR or TE in the second or third. They should trade down see if they can squeeze a high one and two or get two mid to low ones from someone.

You know Carson Palmer is sitting home praying every night the Bengals trade the pick.

If the Bengals pull off an all time miracle and win the last two is it possible for them to lose the one to Chicago or Detroit?

Chicago has 4 wins so they're out of range. The best would be a tie with Detroit, but they aren't going to draft a QB so if the Bengals are dead set on getting a QB they can still get him at pick #2. But with games against Buffalo and New Orleans those two wins are unlikely.

They need to trade it for someone whos established, I mean, they always screw up the first pick and get players that are busts.

Call me crazy but I think Palmer is going to be a good pick for the Bengals. He's a much better QB, than Klinger or Smith was. Klinger was the product of Houston's system and Smith who came out of nowhere for one season. Palmer had the potential when came to USC, he was just an underachiver.

So if he couldn't crank it up against Oregon State, Cal-Berkeley, Stanford and Arizona State for 3 years, what makes you think he'll do something against an NFL team? I think Carson Palmer will be Todd Marinovich without the drugs and crazy Dad.

Palmer this year, and then next year, they'll take whoever the top QB is then for the first pick in the draft.

I think the Bengals more than anything need linemen for either side of the play. But I wouldn't mind them taking Palmer.

We know well enough Cincy does not need a QB, it has a Solid QB in KITNA, what we need to do is trade our #1 draft pick to a Team that will deal a top Corner...All indications say Washington will trade for Palmer/Leftwich.

Palmer underachieved, but he had 3 offensive cordinators and 2 head coaches at USC. It wasn't until Norm Chow came in for his Jr. year that Palmer had a steady influence and played up to his potential.

No brainer here, the 1st pick should be Byron Leftwich. He's basically Daunte Culpepper with a more accurate arm, and more intensity. I don't care if they have Kitna, Leftwich is the kind of player that can make a team good by himself.

Of course, they'll probably take Palmer, and he'll be another average QB.

Or to be sure, they can trade the 1st round pick, and get a guaranteed bust in the later rounds with Ken Dorsey.

Palmer will be more durable than Leftwich.

I don't think Leftwich is going to last very long in the NFL with the injury problems it looks like he's going to have.

I don't think that Champ Baily or Fred Smoot are worth a No.1 draft pick.

Champ is almost worth it, but no by themselves neither is enough. Washington would have to throw in a few more things. Bailey, Patrick Ramsey(QB of future to build up behind Kitna) and 1st or 2nd round pick wouldn't be a bad deal for them.

The first thing they need to do is get a GM in place that knows what he's doing football wise unlike Mike Brown. With an actual GM they may actually be able to live up to their potential.
