This is the saddest poll in the history of mankind.

Cry me a fucking river! These are two of the most popular and critically acclaimed directors of all time. If you have a problem with this tournament than don't vote.

I don't have a problem with either one really but I do NOT think Scorsese deserves to be in the finals. I sure don't think he deserved to beat Welles and the fact that it looks like he'll probably win the whole thing over Hitchcock makes me sick to my stomach. I can count the number of his good movies on one hand and not one of those reach the caliber of any of Hitchcock's good ones. I honestly didn't expect him to get much farther than the second round and that was stretching it already.

I haven't gotten to see that many of Chabrol's classics from the sixties and seventies, as my placing him on my list is mainly based on watching some of his more recent films. That said...

La Ceremonie is one of my favorite films of the 90s. It runs a lot like a more low key and subtle Hitchcock movie. The problem though is that while to some it comes off as I just described it, to some it just comes off as too low key and thus slow moving. I however consider it a very tense, gripping and nuanced piece of work, with fantastic acting all around, but mainly from Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Bonnaire.

I also really liked Story of Women and I thought Merci pour le chocolat was really fun (in it's own elegant way).

Le Beau Serge also needs to be seen just because it's usually referred to as the first film of the new wave (except by Truffaut, who apparently considered it to be Jacques Rivette's Paris nous appartient). It's a very good film to boot.

Even though I haven't seen them, I'll also recommend some films based on reputation and hearsay, as these are commonly referred to as some of Chabrol's best:

Les Cousins (The Cousins)

Les Bonnes Femmes

Les Biches

La Femme Infidele

Que la Bete meure (Killer!/The Beast Must Die/This Man Must Die)

Le Boucher (The Butcher)

I think that should about do it.

Hitchcock.

For a moment there I thought he was gonna lose. What a dreadful day this would be.

Uh oh, there I go! I'm all "worked up" again. Look out everybody I might show up with a gun and go postal on the message board cause Lord knows I'm crazzzzy. So crazy I'm slashing prices! I wish I knew what exageration meant because I sure don't. I also wish I could sleep at night because I haven't slept a WINK since this poll started.

I feel gay because I actually know what movie you're talking about, actually watched the whole thing one day and actually didn't hate it.

Alfred Hitchcock

And let me interject again that this is all opinion. Apparently a good deal of people really like Martin Scorsese and that's cool. Lethargic wants him dead and buried so he can piss on the grave and that's cool too. It's when you start believing that everyone's opinion is fact that you get into trouble.

I do NOT want him dead and I don't hate him or anything like that. I just don't want him to beat Hitchcock because I don't think he's anywhere near his league. That's my opinion. Which, of course, makes it a fact! ha

Scorcese by a mile.

Way too many of Hitchcock's films are too clinical and emotionless. He's a great orchestrator or suspense, but Scorcese blows him away IMO. Scorcese's films have way more heart, soul and humanity in them. If someone said that Scorcese was the best director of all time I certainly wouldn't think it a strange opinion. For me, he is one of the best ever and possibly the best of the last twenty-five years, although on that one I do waver between Scorcese, Kieslowski and Spielberg.
