Classical Works

(This idea is pretty much swiped from SmarkTalk's board, but oh well)

 

Listening to Carmina Burana while perusing the board made me realize that there's no talk of classical music in the Music folder. Amazing, eh? I figured, since any self-respecting music lover (or so I believe) has at least one classical piece or composer they like.

 

For me, it's Wagner, to be sure. Just the epic feel of his works and my love of the Romantic era of the arts in general make him my favorite. His material just pulls you in and forces you to visualize what the music creates, whether you want to or not.

I like Andres Segovia. He plays guitar better than me.

I like Philip Glass a lot. I first started listening to him because of his minimalist work. Minimalism is a genre where a lot of people can get away without having much skill, or much effort, because it's such an interpretive style, but Glass does minimalism right.

 

I also like eastern classical music sometimes, particularly Indian. Ravi Shankar and Shivkumar Sharma are probably my favorites on that side.

Regarding Apocalyptica..well, they're better than Metallica.

 

Classical music is something I don't mind listening to, but never ever do, not to mention the fact that I know nothing about it. I do like Philip Glass though. Floe is some pretty interesting shit. I can respect the eastern stuff for the talent it takes, but the sound of a sitar annoys the fuck out of me.

I like some classical music. I don't like light classical at all, because it's way too slow and quiet. I actually like alot of the harder edged stuff like Wagner.

Classicism all the way for me, Beethoven and Haydn in particular. Well, I also really like Debussy and stuff like Stockhausen and Philip Glass. In fact, there's loads of classical music that I like, but the whole Vienna classicism period is my favorite.

I'm a fan of Wagner's "Ride of the Valkries" (At least, I think it was him).

 

I also like "The 1812 Overture" and "In The Hall of the Mountain King", though I can't recall who composed them...

Mozart is my classical composer of choice, especially "Rondo all Turca" and "Fantasia."

 

Pytor Illich Tchaikovsky wrote the 1812 Overture.

In The Hall Of The Mountain King was part of the Peer Gynt suite, composed by Edvard Grieg, who totally owns everyone with Peer Gynt. Another part of it is Morning, which you've undoubtably heard in an older cartoon or movie or SOMETHING at some point.

 

Of the Russians, Prokofiev is my favorite, because Peter and the Wolf is such a great whole work. Tchaikovsky fights him tooth and nail for that top spot though. To connect the great Russian composers with wrestling, Modest Mussorgsky's "The Gates of Kiev," part of Pictures at an Exhibtion, was heard on Raw tonight as Jerry Lawler made his entrance.

Wagner is pretty good, but I would have to say that I enjoy Vivaldi the most. I always meant to upgrade a cassette of his works I had to CD, but never did get around to it.
