What "Old School" aspect do you miss?

Recommended Posts

Guest Downhome

What things do you miss from the current day and age of Pro. Wrestling that you haven't seen in quite some time. Now, before anyone says it, be a little more descriptive than "a good product", ok? Anyhow, myself, I miss...

1) The days when a tag team would actually wrestle a tag team match. Whatever happened to cutting the ring in half, quick tags, working down the opponent, and keeping them near your conner? Whatever happened to TAG TEAM PSYCHOLOGY?

2) Along with the first one, I miss the "Tag Rope". WWE seems to have brought it back, but apparently no one knows how to use it, nor do the heels no how to use it to their advantage.

3) I miss the days of the heel targeting a body part on the face, and the face having to over come it somehow. I miss a face having his legs taken out, and having to find another way to prevail!

4) I miss the days of people actually selling an injury, and not FORGETTING that they are injured. Edge, I'm looking at you. I miss the days of someones main body part that allows them to do their finisher, thus forcing them to find another way to win.

5) I miss true feuds, where two guys simply fought because their need and love for that damn title meant more than anything in the world to them.

6) I miss the days when PPV's actually meant something.

7) I miss guys holding a title for longer than a month, heh.

8) I miss the "monsters", built up as if no one in a million years could defeat them, only for the biggest underdog to step up to the challange.

9) I miss long, thought out storylines. The kind where you could go back after years have gone by, and still have something there. The type of storylines that actually had a payoff, but didn't hurt everyone involved.

10) I miss the emotion, and innocence of the sport as a whole.

...that's about enough of my ranting for one post, I'll leave this to you guys now and sit back and enjoy!

Sincerely,

...Downhome...

I miss the days in which a title change actually meant something.

I miss how heels were made up of pure evil and made even the most knowledgable smark hate them. Jake Roberts for example.

And Finally I miss the magic of and atmosphere of PPV cards, ie Summerslam and Wrestlemania.

Oh yeah, most PPV's mean nothing now a days, just an extension of the TV shows. They even have promo's, long winded interviews, etc... on PPV's now and I can't stand it!

I also miss the days of when there was a such thing as a true FACE in the role of a hero, rather than an anti-hero.

have you been watching smackdown?

the thing i miss most is long-term selling. not on-and-off body part selling, i'm talking about the ricky steamboat selling that makes you sell fatigue as the match goes on, and requires you to sell for a move longer than 30 seconds. i hate how benoit can give someone 5 german suplexes, and 3 minutes later the guy is wrestling exactly the same as he did before taking them. i hate how babyfaces (especially the rock) make instant comebacks without missing a beat. the babyface is supposed to STRUGGLE to make a comeback: do a move, sell your opponent's offense, then do another move just as the opponent's about to start beating you again. repeat, gradually gaining speed, until you've actually built momentum. edge did an AWESOME job of this in his unforgiven match with eddie guerrero, probably the best of it's kind in the wwf last year.

Easily the thing I miss the most is the old reports from the WWF Command Centre by Billy Red Lyons, Sean Mooney, Gene Okerlund, etc, where they not only ran down the cards for the PPV (usually adding at least one match each week), but house shows as well. I don't miss the superstar interviews so much as I miss actually knowing what I was going to be seeing. It was very helpful knowing whether you were going to get Jake Roberts vs. Randy Savage or Saba Simba vs. The Mountie.

The other thing I miss is the old manager system. Nowadays even if there are managers, they always create these big stables that help each other out all the time. Back then you wouldn't necessarily see Earthquake team up with Honkytonk Man even though they were both managed by Jimmy Hart. At Wrestlemania V every heel, with the exception of Bad News Brown (which was part of his gimmick), had a manager.

I miss two guys working a match simply for the love of wrestling, acting as if every match was their last.

You mean like Chris Benoit?

Seriously, I don't think that this attitude was ever that prevalent. There always seemed to be more Jake Robertses than Ricky Steamboats.

Yeah ECW seems to have ruined that for us. Damn you ECW. When every match was no count out or DQ. So in WWE they never come out and say it but it seems to be almost accepted.

I miss the days when promos were secondary to the matches, and not the other way around.

I miss the days when everyone on the midcard had an angle. I mean, watch some of the old Royal Rumbles - guys come in, and you instantly KNOW who they're going after, none of this job-trading BS.

I miss not knowing that every match was going to be 3 minutes or less, so that you might actually be able to get into the match.

-I miss the excitement of watching RAW. I remember the days where RAW was the single most important event of the week for me. Now it seems more like obligation then something to look forward too.

-I too miss title changes that mean something. Like when Bret Hart won the title in '92, it was a huge story and the beginning of a new era. Now when anyone wins a major title, it has no meaning anymore.

I miss there being Kayfabe in the industry, so that marks wouldn't think they knew it all...

I also miss the basicisity of 80's wrestling... They could do so little, and pop a crowd so huge

I miss....

I miss the World Wrestling Federation...

I miss watching ALL of the shows...Superstars, RAW, etc and not caring that they it was just a clip show...

RAW now is match, interview, clips of the match and interview, match, match, interview, interview, interview, CLIPS, match, interview, interview, match ....etc...

the clips just drive me crazy...I just watched it, and it seems that more people are LEAVING than JUST TUNING IN...and if they cut down on that then that time could be used for matches as well...

I want WRESTLING....that should be the most entertaining part... sometimes I guess Vince and the others don't see it

I don't care how bad Wrestlemania 9 was or how bad the storylines were in 94-96 when the Clique was in control.... at least there was actual wrestling (shitty wrestling...but still wrestling) going on for more than 50% of the time...

I don't care if it's The Goon vs. Waylon Mercy vs. TL Hopper 2 out of 3 falls... it's still wrestling...somewhat....and it's better than the sHHHow we have now...

Fuck the WWE....

I watch as a FAN now...a fan of what I remember...hoping one day it will go back to what I remember from 98-2000 .... let's see Matt Hardy make THAT wish come true...

How could I forget this legendary piece of history...

...I miss the fucking IC Title, and the prestige and importance that it once carried with it's name.

-I miss everything Ric Flair did before Hogan came into power in WCW. His little heel shtick was so ON and just so right that nobody could even touch it. Anybody who tried to copy him could come no closer.

-I miss when somebody would could hit in the leg, and OVERSELL IT.

-I miss Hennig going over the top on a right hand.

-I miss it when 15 years ago, talent was based on wrestling ability and not the fact that you could cut a great promo. No Japanese wrestler EVER had to cut a promo and because of their wrestling ability, most wrestling fans agree that their wrestling is better than North American wrestling. (pardon, UNITED STATES wrestling)

-And I truly miss the days when wrestlers got enough time to tell a story, whether it be 5 minutes or 55 minutes. Now-a-days, you can never tell a story in a match. It's ludicrous.

I remember when we used to complain about 5 minute TV matches. It was like they saw it and went:

"AHA! Not appreciating the 5 minutes we reluctantly give you! Then we'll give you 3 minutes! See how you like that! HAHA! More time for Interviews and skits!"

Well it has only been a couple of years since this dissapeared so I am not sure if it qualifies as "Nostalgic" but what I miss the MOST is the.......COMPETITION. I know that ROH and Puro is out there, but it is not the same having to buy everything that isn't WWE.....I miss the WCW-All nighter they would run at the end of every year that would literally run ALL NIGHT. I just miss turning on different wrestling shows and knowing that whether it was good or bad, AT LEAST it was a totally different type of product.

Honestly, right now I would take WCW in the final horrible years over only having a decent WWE right now. It just isn't the same anymore.....

Despite being probably the biggest WCW hater on the board, I REALLY miss Saturday Night.

I definitely miss the I-C Title.

I miss the days when midcarders were made to look like they at least stood a chance of competing with main eventers.

I miss the days when wrestlers actually cared about titles.

I miss the jobber matches

What sticks out in my mind are commentators who I miss hearing. I really miss Gorilla Monsoon and how he and the Brain would bicker throughout the show, and how Ventura always seemed to be trying to bring up The Predator, and I even miss the Macho Man going crazy in the booth. I really miss Dusty talking about the pay window.

Most other changes I'm pretty content with, but I really miss how much I enjoyed certain commentators.

I miss when interviews were about building up to a match, and made you want to see the face beat up the heel. Nowadays, it's all about trying to make the audience laugh, and get over some silly catchphrase. God forbid you should actually try to get the viewing audience to want to pay to see the product.

I miss the 'fans' caring about the actual Wrestling. I miss when Two guys would start off a match, do a bunch of chain moves, go back and forth, and then one would finally win with a hip toss or a headlock-take over and the crowd would pop huge.

I really miss the IC title.

I also miss Pipers Pit, Snake Pit, Barber shop, etc.

Matt Hardy should get his own Mattitude Shop.

I miss that weekend show hosted by Joe Pedocino where they'd run down the goings on of practically every wrestling organization... WWF, NWA, the Mexican leagues, the Indies, etc.

I miss the excitement of seeing a wrestler jump from one fed to another... and feeling like I'm the only one who knows who he is.

I miss heels who acted like heels and not like assholes trying to be cool.

I miss tag teams who had tag team finishers.

I miss Owen Hart.

I miss tag teams put together for a reason other than "shit we don't have any tag teams, fuck it, these two aren't doing anything, throw them in"

I miss tag team finishers that aren't the given wrestlers singles finishers hit consecutively

I miss being surprised by the outcome of a match

I miss match psychology where an injury prevents a wrestler from doing something, rather than he can do it but then afterwards he must clutch the injured body part for 30 seconds

I miss heel commentators and good commentators

I miss letting the heels keep their belts by getting counted out. Los Geurreros remember this, but they won't let them use it. I remember the anger I felt at the cheap cop-out that led to such joy when the face finally kept them in the ring and got the win

I miss having something to cheer for
