I wanted to see how an "I Quit" match works, and a friend directed me here. Could someone give me some background on the match and possibly tell me where to find it?

All you need to know is they fucking hate each other.

Another I Quit match to look at is Flair vs. Funk from '89 on the fall Clash of the Champions, forget the number.

A thing to note is that Magnum and Tully is a cage match as well. They do a lot of inventive and hardcore spots for the time. Hell, the finish is still damn hardcore today. What you really want to watch that match for, if you're see how to do or write an I Quit match, is how they use the mic as a weapon and to antagonize each other.

The finish, incidentally, involved TA smashing a chair, grabbing a spike of wood and stabbing Tully with it.

In the eye.

Several times.

I have both matches on tape, I dubbed the first 1/2 of the Best of Starrcade tape on the tape with my ECW invade RAW 2/24/1997, One of the tapes I'm most proud of

Blanchard/TA has the most hardcore ending imaginable sicne to this day people aint stabbing each other in the eye with spikes.

Plus ofr its day it is INCREDIBLY violent.

Yes it is a violent ending....the match that comes closest ending wise is probably Rock/Mankind from RR 99. Sure no spike stabbing, but 13 unprotected chairshots to the head....still can't watch that match (especially after BTM). Much like Foley I still have resentment towards The Rock for that

Tully and Magnum put on a great display in that match, and I'm proud to have a copy.

Flair vs Funk from COTC #9 was awesome too.

Cheers,

You can also find the match on Crockett Cup 87. They have a short "Best of Magnum" segment, since he was forced to retire shortly prior to the event. Not sure but I believe it's in full.

The segment also features his U.S. title win over Wahoo McDaniel in a cage, a U.S. title defense against Kamala during (I believe) Bash 85 (it's outdoor), as well as the Starrcade match.

I believe they lifted the wood in the eye from a Jerry Lawler/Terry Funk match from the early eighties, in which Funk actually bladed right beside his eye.
