Royal Rumble 2003 Diatribe

Damn man, there ain't no way Benoit/Angle was *****. Shit, Scott Keith gave it ****3/4 and that's too high too. The beginning of the match was horribly slow, and seeing the same spots without revamping them over and over will not keep the stars that high forever.

Goodness.

There's no way.

A few notes...

He gets a reverse neckbreaker for two before putting on a full-nelson camel clutch. I know there’s a technical name for that move, but it just escaped me

Stevie calls his the "Rat Trap", IIRC.

--The match backgrounds are a nice touch to each Diatribe, just so you know.

--* 3/4 for Trips/Steiner, but you failed to mention anything good about the match...but that's probably because I'm blind.

--***** for Angle/Benoit. I haven't seen the match yet, but where would you stack it up with their better PPV meetings? (Wrestlemania 17, Backlash 2001 & Unforgiven 2002)

--Which past Rumbles do you consider to be better than the 2003 version?

Another great review, as you're able to transcribe every move, near-count and Steiner blow-up quite nicely. And the lack of cynicism used in each match rating makes it much more enjoyable than any other "rant".

EDIT: Signature removed.

I just read his and he said that he deducted 1/4* for the chinlocks. I can forgive that, simply because it wasn't a long stretch period of rest and Angle tries to mix it up by adding a body scissors. Watching Benoit try to get out of a hold like that makes a rest hold much more interesting that just your normal chinlock.

As for the *****, it's my opinion. One of the best matches that I've ever seen. Not everyone will agree.

Personally, this Benoit/Angle was the best one out of all of them...and best of all, clean finish.

Past Rumbles that I liked better....92 comes to mind immediately. I'd also say 2000.

Thank you very much. I try to keep an open mind about things.

Test. Test! ::sobs:: I blame APO for being that one Test fan (With Test, they only need one fan to justify doing something with him)

Good job, By the way

I understand. Good read nonetheless. We just have to agree to disagree.

I liked your review. The thorough match descriptions make your ratings much more believable than the SK rants. Where the cynicism there migh give me more entertainment with the occasional laugh, your review is more respectable as far as believing how good/bad a match really was. I didnt watch the ppv, I watch none of them for the obvious reasons, and this review pretty much told me all I needed to know.

Your description of HHH/Steiner didnt seem to warrant your rating though. Thatd be my only complaint/question I guess.

Very good writing!

Good Read, You do what the job stays unlike certain OTHER bitter nameless ranters do. Give yourself a cookie Dames.

I initally thought Angle/Beniot was merely **** until I watched the tape HEARD the crowd and the emotion was even better and I caught more small things and that BUMPED it to *****.

Call me nuts, Steiner/HHH was fun to watch, maybe it was all flair's fault. I just can't justify giving a match DUD when flair is introvertally involved...the match was *1/4 ONLY for the Steiner Backlash and Flair's Sledge sell.

Dames - your match description for Benoit/Angle was excellent!

I didn't bother with the PPV last night but your semi-PBP drew me right in and almost had me cheering at my monitor, top stuff.

Great read, Dames.

I totally agree with the ***** rating...that was probably the best straight wrestling match WWE has put on since 2000, and maybe even before that.

I only watched the match once, but I'm leaning more toward **** 1/2. The Sharpshooter went nowhere, imho, and I really wanted to see Benoit lock it on only to have it countered into Angle's anklle lock. The legscissors ankle lock was really an astute finish, imho, since it's a more realistic way to apply the hold and showed that Angle's style was evolving against Benoit.

However, the Germans never really got a chance to hit their stride, and I really only wanted to see that spot once. I'd have to reqwatch the match, but in my opinion it wasn't the theoretical ***** match. Excellent. WWE MOTY. But not *****.

good description on angle/benoit, although i disagree with the rating. they didn't really start feeling it (at least i think) till the german suplex spot, and it seems like they were just kind of biding their time until that happened. i expected them to start with awesome mat wrestling, & was kind of disappointed when they started with requisite side headlock-shoulderblock stuff. the ending was awesome (best ending of any of their series), and the finishing hold sequence was about as good as unforgiven, but there were too many directionless spots and the beginning wasn't as good. i loved the bret (sharpshooter) and owen (belly-to-belly) shades too. once they got the flow right, it was a beautiful thing to behold, it just took them a little while to click.

If you guys don't know by now, I was at the Rumble live...and giving Steiner/HHH a rating of *3/4 is absurd. Nothing against you Dames, but this match was horrible. HHH bumped for Steiner and that was about it. The crowd turned on Steiner really fast and that pretty much showed the match sucked. Keith rating it around -** is about right.

***** for Benoit/Angle? Defiantely. These guys busted their balls and the crowd heat really, really made the match. And by the way, Benoit getting a standing ovation in Boston was the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life. Who would of thought you'd EVER see that outside of Canada? And both guys deserved it.

Good read, Dames...I just disagree with your Steiner/HHH rating.

I was told that would never happen... more than once... by more than one person in here.

Of course, they are nowhere to be found today. Typical.

Giving Steiner v. HHH *3/4 is absurd and there was some spotty selling in Benoit v. Angle- I don't think it was a perfect ***** match.

Other then that- very good read

Good report, Dames. I couldn't believe how much I was into the near falls and submission holds. I knew Angle would retain but I had a small feeling Benoit might take it. That is why this was such a great match. No one lost and everyone gained.

I'd give Benoit/Angle ***** easily. Steiner/HHH... -***1/2. I thought it was THAT bad.

I find it ironic that most people disagree with my Steiner/HHH rating instead of the first time that I've given a match 5 stars in any of my Diatribe's.

Why did you give Steiner v. HHH that high a rating Dames??

I'll have to wait for the dvd to completely judge Benoit v. Angle but there were a few parts I didn't like like some of the slow spots.

While watching the match, I could see that HHH was really bumping as much as he could for Steiner and Flair was doing whatever he could to help the match along as well. I'm still in shock over Steiner's lack of an arsenal these days. HHH did blade to try and get Steiner over and although it didn't go anywhere, I added a 1/4* to the teased Steiner Recliner in the beginning of the match.

How sad does a match have to be when a *3/4 rating is considered REALLY high? Damn...

I thought the Angle match was ****1/2 at most. It was just to slow at the start for me.
