In something I never thought possible, friggin' Neon Genesis Evangelion is going to air on Cartoon Network next month. At first I thought it was just some fake crap, but I went to ADV's website and saw the post for myself:

FOUR ADV FILMS TITLES TO BE FEATURED IN CARTOON NETWORK’S GIANT ROBOT WEEK

ON AIR MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24 THROUGH FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28

HOUSTON, January 29, 2003-Episodes from four ADV Films titles-Neon Genesis Evangelion, Dai-Guard, Martian Successor Nadesico and the Harmony Gold production Robotech-will be featured as part of Cartoon Network’s first-ever Giant Robot Week, to air Monday, Feb. 24 through Friday, Feb. 28, 2003. Giant Robot Week, on the air 4-5 p.m. during the Toonami afternoon action-adventure block, celebrates the “giant fighting robot” anime genre.

In the press release announcing Giant Robot Week, Cartoon Network noted the quality of the selected ADV Films titles, and the fact that Giant Robot Week will mark the first-ever appearance of Dai-Guard and Martian Successor Nadesico on national television.

What I want to know is how the hell they plan on editing Eva because the first episode(hell, the first 5 shows) are chock full of vulgar language and "blood" and I thought Anno said that he'd never let Eva be shown unless it was unedited, so I'm left wondering what the fuck is going on. Methinks it's going to be pretty interesting to see what all they show and don't show come Feb. 24th...

Well, they made Haruka and Mirchiru, who are lesbians in the Sailor Moon series, into cousins in the english dub....to explain the closeness, I suppose. Yeah...like that really explains anything.

Heh, that's easy to do compared the violence in Eva(for instance, in the first episode, Unit-01 gets pinned against a building then gets stabbed right through the head by the Angel and there's a HUGE geyser of LCL(basically blood), and Unit-01 responds by tearing the shit out of the Angel and there's shit flying EVERYWHERE).

Hmmmm...and I thought you said it was blood.

I'm curious...what does everyone find so interesting in those robot anime programs?

I've heard that the english dub for Eva is one of the most unintentionally hilarious things you will ever hear, so I'll probably watch it for laughs.

But yea, I'm not sure how exactly they'll get by censoring it. I mean, even showing at 1 AM with a strong parental advisory, they edited out the blood-splatter-on-the-windshield bit at the end of the first episode of Cowboy Bebop, which was a heckuva lot tamer. And while they're done with these weird robot-but-not-really things in Eva, there's still about 18 tons of blood dropped in most episodes, not to mention limbs being ripped off and things being decaptitated.

And don't ask me why I like it, Yuna, because this is the ONLY Giant Fighting Robot anime I like. I can't stand the others, and I'm not sure why.

To be frank, it's not really the robots themselves that draw so much interest as it is the people who pilot them.

Take Robotech, for instance. While it's premise was humans vs. aliens, it developed several interesting subplots like the love triangle that formed between Rick/MinMay/Lisa(the most famous one).

In Evangelion, the primary battle is between not the Angels vs. humankind, but between Shinji and his self-hatred. Plus, Eva is very religion-based as it challenges the beliefs of the Christian faith and leads you to ask yourself what do you believe.

All in all, not every robot anime is purely about "smash 'em up, blow 'em up" and that's what the big deal is with some of them.

Apo did you know TechTV now has weekly anime and it's unedited as far as i can tell. They show one "movie" split into 30 minute episodes each week. TechTV is channel 354 on DirecTV. I'm not too sure on the schedule, but it seems to change at least every two weeks.

Problem with "robot anime" is that it's nearly impossible to just jump in and watch a episode here and there. It's something where you basically have to watch from the beginning to know what's going on.

However i did find that if i watch from the beginning i actually like alot of them. And i'm limited to CN as far as my viewing goes so I'm sure i haven't even seen the good ones.

For goodness sakes, it's only two or three eps of each series.

I thought Anno said that he'd never let Eva be shown unless it was unedited

Anno has jack to do with it. ADV's reneging a bit on their commitment not to show any of their anime uncut (which kept them from being a force on TV in the first place) to promote and set the stage for when the Anime Network finally gets going nationwide.

And Eva's dub is in no way embarrassing. It may grate for some Hayashibura fans, but it's perfectly serviceable.

Yep. They've only aired TV series like Crest of the Stars and Serial Experiments Lain so far, though.

Eek.

I agree with you on alot of things APO, but not this. Eva has NO religious meaning. At all.

Crosses, symbols, the Tree of Life, the Dead Sea Scrolls, angels - they're *all* there as plot devices. Plot devices that the directors and scriptwriters considered "cool". 'Cause that's what Christianity's considered to be in Japan. There's little, if any, religious commentary.

They've even admitted it publically:

Tsurumaki: There are a lot of giant robot shows in Japan, and we did want our story to have a religious theme to help distinguish us. Because Christianity is an uncommon religion in Japan we thought it would be mysterious. None of the staff who worked on Eva are Christians. There is no actual Christian meaning to the show, we just thought the visual symbols of Christianity look cool. If we had known the show would get distributed in the US and Europe we might have rethought that choice.

Eva's more about psychology and relationships, really. And the squashing and rending of flesh in an orgy of blood and death.

But that's neither here or there. :)

Well nuts. Damn adequate dubs!

Well, that makes my job of figuring out what just what in the hell happened in "End of Evangelion" a little easier... sort of... not really.

Sorry, didn't mean to spoil your fun.

Please don't think too hard about EoE. You seem like a nice guy, and I'd hate to hear about your head exploding with the brains and the gore and the hemorrhaging and the hey-hey.

Oh, you didn't spoil my fun. That movie is devoid of fun. It's like they decided "Hey, let's wrap up the series with a movie that doesn't explain anything from the series, AND uses NEW plot devices that ALSO aren't explained!"

I could follow what was happening, but I'll be damned if I could figure out how, or more importantly, WHY.

Edit: And I have just now figured out you were referring to the dub bit when you said "spoil my fun".

I am teh idiot.

Oh no, not that. Everyone knows EoE is wonderfully odd & incoherent.

The promise of an awful television dub.

EDIT: Mmm. Now I look teh idiot thanks to your edit. Oh well.

Yeah, I knew about that, Toy.I watched the first 8 episodes of Lain last Saturday when they did a mini-marathon and now they seem to just be showing them all over again at the moment.

Heh, damn I feel like a complete tool after reading that. I think too much sometimes.

I had a feeling that's what was going on.

On a kind of unrelated note: Have any of you seen .hack//sign(or however they write it)? I've seen the first 7 episodes and think it's decent enough, but the main character(the wizard who can't log out) comes off like a whiny bitch, which annoys me greatly.

Also, I'm wondering when they'll debut Trigun and Naruto because both shows are pretty damn good(although I've only seen the first 3 shows of Naruto).

.hack//infection, you mean? The one based off the PS2 game?

I haven't seen it yet, but I think that's gonna be on CN at some point too.

Aiyeee... Someone is trying to push Eva as being deep again. Eva starts out fun but gets pretty meaningless near the end. Not only did the art budget run dry near the end, but many of the emotional scenes almost feel like they're trying to fill a full 30 minutes.

You know those really bad animes, the kind where you sit and stare at the clock and see how much longer this thing has left?

With Eva, it's almost like IT'S staring at the clock, wondering how many more robot dismemberment scenes, flashing words zipping by, and people shouting at each other are necessary to get you to leave.

While the same "Misato shouts to the air" animation or "Ritsuko looking over Maya's shoulder at a console" make the taking parts repetative as all hell, at least all the battle stuff is freshly animated each time. That's about all I can say for it.

Don't get me wrong, it's an okay series, but anyone going on about how absolutely wonderful it is probably is listening to Linkin Park while updating their LiveJournal with comments about how their friends have abandoned them and their parents don't understand them and other whiny crap. Also, run-on sentences are cool.

I do love Toastyfrog's episode summaries though.

To the Japanese, they don't really follow the Christian religion and such. When this anime was released to the United States and such, where Christianity or Catholocism are the big religions, it was INTERPRETED as a religious show with huge implications on what our religions are like. I personally felt that something like that was just a cool robot show, but it only took me seing the movies after the series has ended to see that it's crazy if you look at through the religious perspective. Outside of that, at least it's better than Gundam...:) But in all seriousness, some of the morals and views of that are gonna be questioned if they are shown in it's entirety on Cartoon Network...I'm not gonna be one cuz I personally love the series. Religiously, for us, it can question the very values and morals of those religions. Otherwise, it's a cool show to watch.

I'm not very big on mecha (nearly had a fit when Inu-Yasha was replaced by Zoids on CN's Adult Swim), but I've never seen Evangelion, so I guess here's my chance to get my feet wet.

I'm seeing that their timeslot is going to be between 4 and 5 PM. Do you know how much editing and censorship are we going to get with that scheduling? And you know Cartoon Network is treading on water here because anything that can be suggested as religious will be considered religious. They changed the title"Candidate for Goddess" to "Pilot Candidate", so that should be a sign of things to come.

Hate to digress, but I'm watching FLCL right now, and it's confusing me and frightening me at the same time.

Damn it all. That's where I get most of my material. Well...him and Seanbaby.

I await the public skewering of EoE on Toasty, as I am a cheap bastard.

Whaa?

Eva is actually whinier than MS Gundam. It's about as whiny as Gundam WING even, but just nowhere nearly as stupid.

Nadesico = Sex, though. I love Vandread much MUCH more than Nadesico, but if it paves the way, then all is good.

Oh, I can't wait to see how heavy the Eva edits will be: "Wow Misato, you sure do have a lot of <flat overdub>soda</flat overdub>" It is on Australia's Adult Swim block, though.

Dai-gaurd is supposed to be good. I hope I can remember to see that.
