TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 So which matches did you think were good which were supposed to absolutely suck considering the talent involved. Royal Rumble 1990: Greg Valentine vs Ron Garvin, I Quit match A very surprisingly good match which featured good psychology, a smart ending and the North American PPV debut of the sharpshooter(to my knowledge). Summerslam 1993: Lex Luger vs Yokozuna, WWF title match Consdering the millions and millions of restrictions involved this match was pretty damn good and had a very hot crowd. Well those tow come to mind for me, what about the rest of you?
Guest kingkamala Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Lex Luger Vs Dan Spivey, WrestleWar91: Slightly overrated by some but still 1000x better then it had any right to be. I'd give it ***3/4 maybe even ****. Dan Spivey is motivated more then he's ever been for some reason during this match.
Guest bob_barron Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 Trish Stratus v. Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley No Way Out 2001
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted February 7, 2003 Author Report Posted February 7, 2003 Yah I forgot bout Steph/Trish. That's still one of the WWE's best women's matches ever.
Guest CanadianChris Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 See if you can spot the theme here... X-Pac vs. Shane McMahon, WrestleMania XV Test vs. Shane McMahon, Summerslam 99 Vince McMahon vs. Shane McMahon, WrestleMania X-7
Guest Midnight Express83 Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 as for debut of the Sharpshooter on PPV: 1985, Wrestling Classics. Adonis vs JYD(?). As for good matches that should have been crappy: 1987 Wargames. Out of Flair, Arn, Tully, Lex, and JJ vs Dusty, Koloff, Hawk, Animal, and Ellering. You got in order: Great, Good, good, ok, Crap, vs Crap, Crap, Crap, Crap, and Crap. With that much crap, you think the match would be shitty, but it is one of the best matches I have ever seen.
Guest Tim Cooke Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 Arn and Tully are the ULTIMATE war games workers. Wargames is made for guys like Koloff to come in and no sell for the huge face pop explosion. Tim
JustJoe2k5 Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 Juventud Guerrera vs. Blitzkrieg from WCW Spring Stampede '99. Both are really good cruiserweight stars, but WCW put them in the opening match so I'm sure they didn't expect them to put on a match that pretty much outshined the entire PPV. Spring Stampede '99 as a whole was a surprise, probably one of WCW's last great PPVs.
JustJoe2k5 Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 Midnight Express83, it really isn't fair to scale everyone on their actual wrestling skills in a match designed to be an all out brawl. When you think about brawling skills most everyone in the match is good to great and that's really what matters.
Guest JHawk Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 as for debut of the Sharpshooter on PPV: 1985, Wrestling Classics. Adonis vs JYD(?). Adonis vs. Dynamite Kid, but that's the right show. To add to this list, what about Hogan-Warrior from WrestleMania VI? Granted, they rehearsed that one about 75,000 times, but who would have thought Warrior was carryable?
Guest Dmann2000 Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 Trish Stratus v. Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley No Way Out 2001 I second that. A bloody miracle that one.
Guest Dmann2000 Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 To add to this list, what about Hogan-Warrior from WrestleMania VI? Granted, they rehearsed that one about 75,000 times, but who would have thought Warrior was carryable? Forget that, what about Warrior vs Savage from WM VII I mean Savage was on the downturn since losing the title and Warrior had never been that great, his champ run had bombed. Maybe it was thought that it'd be ok, but ****1/2 stars? I bet no one thought that'd happen.
Guest converge241 Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 Valentine - Garvin was the bomb Austin - Show before WMXV
EL DANDY~! Posted February 8, 2003 Report Posted February 8, 2003 Shawn/HHH at SummerSlam. Man with a broken back against a man who really can't work because of a bad leg. I rest my case.
Guest wwF1587 Posted February 8, 2003 Report Posted February 8, 2003 i second either Steph VS Trish at NWO 01 or GOD/HBK at SummerSlam 02... at the beginning of the HHH/HBK match i sighed but towards the end it ended it up being pretty damn good.
Guest treble charged Posted February 9, 2003 Report Posted February 9, 2003 Shawn/HHH at SummerSlam. Man with a broken back against a man who really can't work because of a bad leg. I rest my case. Yeah, I agree with that. I really had low expectations going into that match, especially considering the build towards it had been pretty horrible, IMO. They proved me wrong, though.
Guest Sandman9000 Posted February 9, 2003 Report Posted February 9, 2003 Wrestlepalooza, Justin Credible vs. Shane Douglas.
EL DANDY~! Posted February 9, 2003 Report Posted February 9, 2003 FORGOT ABOUT THAT ONE!!! Damn, Sandy. That's a good one. Also, I can think of a couple matches I've seen recently that shouldn't have been that good, like Cena/Angle and Big Show/Brock Lesnar at SS
Guest Dmann2000 Posted February 9, 2003 Report Posted February 9, 2003 Show vs Lesnar at RR is actually better (and watchable too a decent little 6 1/2 minute power match)
Guest bravesfan Posted February 9, 2003 Report Posted February 9, 2003 First thing to come to my mind...Stephanie vs. Trish, from No Way Out 2001.
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted February 9, 2003 Author Report Posted February 9, 2003 When I think about it an obvious one is Rock/Hogan. That was about a trillion times better than it had any right to be. Goldberg/Steiner form Fallbrawl 2000 was better than I thought possible.
Guest HartFan86 Posted February 9, 2003 Report Posted February 9, 2003 I'd have to say HBK vs. HHH at Summerslam 2002....It was amazing watching that live on PPV becuase you would think that HBK was pretty much done, but he proved us wrong. It's too bad everything he's done after that has pretty much either sucked/un-noteworthy....but that was one hell of a comeback match.
Guest JHawk Posted February 9, 2003 Report Posted February 9, 2003 I'm in the minority, but I still say Kane-Test from No Mercy 2001 was **, so that should be included here. There was an Albert-Kane IC Title match on SmackDown that was around **1/2 (June 2001 if I'm remembering right)
Guest HartFan86 Posted February 9, 2003 Report Posted February 9, 2003 Forgot Hogan/Rock at Mania 18...that was one of those matches you were looking forward to, but didn't think was going to be good.....but good lord, that was an awesome match.
cawthon777 Posted February 9, 2003 Report Posted February 9, 2003 I second Warrior / Savage at WrestleMania VII. One of the best Mania matches of all time. Others worth mentioning: Bret vs. Owen ... WrestleMania X ... Owen had hardly been able to shine prior to this match so it was basically "former world champion vs. glorified jobber" ... I figured it would be a throw-away Furnas, LaFon, & the Godwinns vs. Owen, Bulldog, & the New Rockers ... Survivor Series 96 ... any match with the Godwinns can't be that great - but the offense from Furnas & LaFon and the great selling from Owen & Bulldog not only made the match a lot of fun but created a pretty decent and underrated rivalry for the next few months I was going to add Taker vs. Kane at Mania XIV but now that I think about it ... just about any *** bout involving Kane (Austin at KOTR, Angle at Mania, etc).
Guest Shaneomac Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 How about DDP vs. Jeff Jarrett vs. David Arquette in the ready to rumble cage match?
Guest MillenniumMan831 Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 To ME, it was Furnas/LaFon vs. Bulldog/Owen at IYH: Final Four. Now, at the time, I was a mark and couldn't really care less about Furnas/LaFon since they seemed so bland to me. I didn't give them a chance in the world and really wasn't paying much attention to the match at first. However, the match got really interesting and got me enthrawled. I figured Furnas/LaFon would walk away with the straps and I was actually cheering for them. However, they only managed a DQ win. Still, it was a TREMENDOUS match! One of the forgotten classics, IMHO.
Guest bob_barron Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 How about DDP vs. Jeff Jarrett vs. David Arquette in the ready to rumble cage match? Good choice- that match was AWESOME.
Guest BorneAgain Posted February 12, 2003 Report Posted February 12, 2003 Flair-McMahon at RR 2002 surprised the hell outta me, as did Austin-McMahon at St. Valentine's Day Massacre
