What is the greatest film of all time...

I was just sitting here thinking about this, and was currious as to what you thought. What is the greatest film of all time, without some sort of love plot, sub-plot, or aspect? I'm talking, no man-woman (or whatever) aspect to the film at all, period.

Sincerely,

...Downhome...

Lawrence of Arabia

There isn't even a single woman in a speaking role.

[Carson]I did not know that.[/Carson]

I actually feel guilty to say this, but I've never seen that film. I can't believe there wasn't even a single woman in a speaking role in that one.

Three words.

Texas

Chainsaw

Massacre

Actually I consider that the greatest film of all time anyway, but there happens to be no romance on top of it.

I always got a "love vibe" when Granpa was sucking on the fingers of Sally

Hmm...so we're talking "manly man" movies here...well how about The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Ironically i watched this for the first time last week. I was never much of a western fan so I've never watched them. I will probably give more of Eastwood's a chance.

Behind Enemy Lines! No just kidding, but I was trying to think of any Owen Wilson movies without romance and this is the only one I could think of. (Anthony and Inez in Bottle Rocket, Derek and Matilda in Zoolander, Chon Wang and Princess Pei Pei in Shanghai Noon, Roy O'Bannon and Chon's sister in Shanghai Knights, Owen's spy character and the girl spy in I Spy, Owen's serial killer character and Jeneane Garafolo's character in The Minus Man, The Baumer and Gwyneth Paltrow's Tenenbaum in the Royal Tenenbaums (She's adopted). Yeah I'm a big Owen fan.

Oh my God, ANOTHER Owen Wilson mega-fan? All this time, I thought I was the only one alive.

Cheech had a woman at home and we heard them. They tried to fuck the hitch hikers. They got deported with a wedding party.

Also both really loved pot.

Does the thing between Cage and Arquette in Bringing Out The Dead count? Because I didn't really see anything that would constitute romance in that. What about Jay trying to fuck Bethany in Dogma?

Oh, I'm an idiot! 12 Angry Men!

It should count. It may not have been romantic, but their relationship was more than just friendly.

That's easy. The greatest movie in every category:

Searching for Bobby Fischer.

Dude, does the relationship between Lawrence Fishburn and Ben Kingsley mean anything to you? They were 'checkmating' eachother all over the board, if you know what I mean.

Memento totally had a romantic subplot. If you count his wife, it had two.

you may or may not want to count 'citizen kane'. kane does get married twice, but the intention of the movie is hardly romantic.

if you don't want to count that one, then i think 'ran' is easily the greatest movie ever made with no love story. no romance, no hanky panky...nothing. i don't think there's really any contest here. if you think there's a better "no love" movie out there than 'ran', i'm all ears.

'duck soup', 'dr strangelove' and '2001' get honorable mention.

'the 400 blows' is another good one. 'a hard day's night' is too.

Exactly, it was the entire root and core of the entire film.

I say again, Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Ok, maybe it's not better, but I'd say they're equal.

you know, i would actually say that TCM is just as entertaining as 'ran' and visually one is just as effective as the other. but i say 'ran' wins on characters (especially lady kaede--rowr...).

Fair enough, but I defy anyone to name a better no love movie than the two of those. I'll give them a tie.

edit: I mean, the movies are tied. That kind of looked like I would reward anyone who named a better movie with a necktie.

How about Philadelphia? Where's my necktie, bitch?? Just kidding. I haven't seen it in awhile, does it have a romantic subplot, I don't think it does.

Tom Hanks and his lover.

Cool Hand Luke. The closest you get are the guys drooling over the woman washing the car.

The Original Apocalypse Now. The re-edited version does.

To toss out another David Lean movie, Bridge on the River Kwai.

Lot of your classic world war II movies, The Dirty Dozen and the Great Escape for instance.

Since we're mentioning Kubrick, how about A Clockwork Orange. No romance in that movie whatsoever.
