I mistakenly scheduled two of them for the same time, so I'll be frantically shuffling from one date to the other, coming up with wacky excuse after wacky excuse to go see the other girl. The awkwardness will only be matched by the hilarity.

I'm especially annoyed. I make sure all my absolutely closest friends are as desperate and dateless as me, if not more so, that way I'll never feel upset that I'm the only single one.

 

Lately, they've been all getting into relationships, bar this one guy and me. So, today, Valentine's Day, he said "Screw it", asked someone out and now they're off fornicating or whatever it is young lovers do on a first date (I have forgotten, been D & D so long).

I just watched thirty minutes of VH1's "100 Greatest Love Songs" and I do believe that I'll spend the rest of the day crying softly into my sweater. I try to stop, but then I'll think of Luther Vandross singing "Here and Now" and my eyes start leaking.

This is the way that society works. February 14th is a day for love, or, failing that, casual sex. If you fail to have a date on this day designated for such things, then you have ceased to be a productive member of society. You are, for lack of a better word, a loser. It doesn't matter what you think about it; that's just the way that it is. When I embarked on my sexual journey after puberty, I never once imagined that at just two months shy of 20, I'd be dateless and alone. So there's a lot of inner turmoil involved in knowing that almost everyone (including people less charming, funny, attractive, desirable, etc., than I am) is out enjoying each other's company, while I am forced to sit here and wonder what went wrong. Being alone on any holiday is depressing, but this one is especially so.

I think we should start our own holiday. One for single losers. We'll call it . . . "Single Loser Day" and it will be a worldwide event. We'll have it . . . tomorrow, say, to rub our singleness in the face of the couples waking from their night of endless love.
