EL DANDY~! 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2003 OK. First and foremost...Halle Berry deserved the Oscar for the breaking down, and then broken down woman she portrayed. This was an intense and gripping movie. I couldn't believe some of the things I saw in there. And one other thing. The sex scenes are some of the most intense scenes I've ever witnessed in a movie. I am going to go out of my way to see this movie again. Your thoughts on it even though it;s over a year old?
Guest Downhome Report post Posted February 15, 2003 I went to the theater to watch it, and enjoyed it. The ending left me a feeling a little "blah" though, as I just didn't feel that everything had been wrapped up enough to even warrent an ending yet. I loved what was there though, and yes she deserved to be recognized for her performance, and I'm glad she was. The sex scenes are indeed some of the "hardest" I've ever seen in a major film before, too hard for my taste. I didn't mind seeing her naked, never do mind that, I just don't really like sex scense of that intensity in films like this. It didn't add anything more to it, just seemd to be there to get more people to go see it for that. Like I've said before, if you are a great writer or dirrector, less is almost always more in my eyes when it comes to sex and violence, but there ARE exceptions.. Guest godthedog Report post Posted February 15, 2003 i think if it was there for the people to come see it, it wouldn't been shot in such an unsettling way. the sex scene was seemingly there to make people uncomfortable and make them think about the characters' desperation more than the characters' momentary pleasure (which is what about 90% of sex scenes in movies try to capture). i liked the movie a lot. wasn't the best movie of 2001 by a long shot, but easily one of the better ones. it had a good, slow-moving, kind of ambiguous tone that felt very human. Guest Downhome Report post Posted February 15, 2003 Oh, I agree that it showed the characters' desperation, I'm just saying it could have been done in another way. I think the way it was shot, and done, it made people want to see it. They hear people say how intense it was, blah, blah, blah, and they went to check it out. I don't know about you but I know people who did just that, and I'm sure they're not the only ones. I think sex scenes, like this one, are a clich in themselves. I undertand it's what happens in the real world, but I still feel there could be better ways to show ones emotions on the screen. It almost seems like the folk in Hollywood sit there and go, ok we need to show this certain emotion here. Oh, I know, how about they hardcore fuck, that should do it! It just doesn't show originality to me. If you want to do it, at least do it in a way that looks intense, without being so blatent. I loved the movie though, as I loved the slow-moving pace like you said, it did feel very real, I love films like that.
EL DANDY~! 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2003 The sex scenes were like this: I mean, there was no background music or anything, they just went out there and fucked each other until their brains exploded...
Guest Downhome Report post Posted February 15, 2003 The sex scenes were like this: I mean, there was no background music or anything, they just went out there and fucked each other until their brains exploded... That's a great way to explain it, lol. When it started, I just sat there with my mouth open, in awe. I simply couldn't believe what I saw, lol.

Guest Downhome Report post Posted February 16, 2003 That sex is more intense than most porno sex... Now let's not be ridiculous. That scene with Halle and Billy Bob was more believable than many porn scenes I've seen before, so I think that also.

That scene with Halle and Billy Bob was more believable than many porn scenes I've seen before, so I think that also. Strange that a scene of people pretending to have violent sex seemed more believable to you than scenes of people actually engaging in violent sex. Granted the circumstances surrounding the violent sex were more believably set up in Monster's Ball than they would be in a typical porn (which, admittedly, isn't difficult), but the actual scene itself of the coitus was no more or less believable than a porn. The scene worked very well, but, again, let's not get ridiculous in the praise.

Halle and Billy actually looked like, acted like, and had expressions like they were really fucking, unlike many porno shit where they seem to be bored as hell. Halle and Billy actually looked like, acted like, and had expressions like they were really fucking, unlike many porno shit where they seem to be bored as hell. Several points, I suppose. (i) the believability of the scene was never the issue. I stated that I did not believe the scene was any more or less believable than that which is featured commonly in porn. (ii)Perhaps I watch good porn, but most of what I watch does not feature people who appear "bored as hell." The people in the porn I watch look like, act like, and have facial expression like they're actually fucking. (iii) the issue that seems ridiculous to me is the statement that the scene was more intense (though now I'm beginning to wonder exactly what the original poster meant by "intense") than "most porno scenes" (and then I'm also wondering how far reaching that rather vague phrase is). Most porn scenes I've seen are more intense than the scene in question, many very much more intense. (iv) The fact that I don't believe the scene to have been as intense or more believable than most porn does not mean that I felt the scene was lacking or somehow failed. The scene worked. It advanced character development within the film and presented somewhat shocking imagery. To say that it did any more than that, though, is stretching. Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted February 16, 2003 Maybe intense means it was more arousing than many porn scenes? I don't know, some people say it was too disturbing to get turned on by.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted February 16, 2003 I don't think that was the meaning...It was likely meaning...INTENSE in the dramatic fury of it... Such a Shame...a great movie with so many great things to say and yet we can only debate the "Intensity" of this DRAMA and Porno...fucking shame.
EL DANDY~! 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2003 I just added the sex part to my original post...it was everyone else who took that and ran with it...
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted February 16, 2003 I didn't find anything erotic if you weeeil about the sex scene. It definately wasn't something meant to draw in "what Halle Berry fucking?...I'm soo there" crowd. Guys coming in for that sex scene would end up walking out feeling dirty instead of "turned on". I have no problem with those kind of sex scenes espiecally when they fit in with the story.
