Guest iamsherm Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I was just wondering what the general consensus was on Goldust's new character with tourette's syndrome? I read the RAW thread and it seemed the consensus was distaste. In my opinion, I rather enjoyed the interview. While it was awkward at first to hear him lose control, I soon began to feel for him. I think JR and Lawler's tone of voice as well as Goldust's excellent acting will do wonders in getting over all parties involved. Randy Orton and Batista look like assholes for doing this to Goldust while Booker T will (hopefully) get revenge on the mastermind of the entire attack, Triple H, at Wrestlemania. I just don't understand how it's offensive. I could understand if he was swearing (ala Amy Poehler's character Deuce Bigelow) and how that would be offensive to some, but not this. This seems very "real life" and it's fresh to boot. Any other thoughts?
Guest treble charged Report post Posted February 26, 2003 It was funny, so I really hope they aren't trying to play it off as something serious, since the arena last night was in hysterics after they realized what was going on.
Guest AM The Kid Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I think it came off very poorly, he didn't play it all that well.
Guest Dangerous A Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I thought the interview was good, but Goldust pretending to have Tourette's was fucking dumb. It looked stupid and I was embarassed to be watching wrestling at that point in time. My girlfriend and her friends were at my place at the time and they remarked how bad Goldust was in acting like he had Tourette's and thought the whole thing looked retarded. My girlfriend and her friends also casually follow (because of me) and I have to say I was quite embarassed to be part of this product. So in other words, I think the Goldust/Tourette's deal is FUCKING RETARDED!!!
Guest iamsherm Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I don't think it was intended to be funny. I didn't laugh. I can see why they people would laugh though simply because we have been trained to think of Goldust as this goofy, funny guy. But he seemed all business last night. Let me ask ya'll this then: what can the WWE do to improve the gimmick? I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but what the hell.
Guest HartFan86 Report post Posted February 26, 2003 The first time he made that noise, it jumped me out of my seat cause I really wasn't expecting it. I dunno...I don't see how this gimmick is going to really do anything for anyone, but we'll see. It's intresting, to say the least.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted February 26, 2003 Randy Orton and Batista look like assholes for doing this to Goldust while Booker T will (hopefully) get revenge on the mastermind of the entire attack, Triple H, at Wrestlemania. Triple H didn't "mastermind" any attack, he just told Batista and Orton to look for Scott Steiner and they ran across Goldust. Don't let JR fool you into thinking "The Cerebral Assassin" is behind every devious deed ever done. But seriously, I thought the segment was kind of corny, but at least they're TRYING to be somewhat creative. I just hope it doesn't deteriorate into Goldust becoming a Tommy Dreamer-like "I eat gross stuff" comedy character.
Guest Shaneomac Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I just wonder if he'll make these noises and twitch while he's in the ring having a match. Or if this'll just affect him during interviews and backstage skits.
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted February 26, 2003 It come off like they are trying to portray him as a comedic character too me. That might not be what they intended to do, but hey. This will get old really fast, if they have to do this they need to keep it as short as possible. If it drags on it will be even more ridiculous then it already is. Of course if anybody can get it over, it will be Goldust.
Guest HartFan86 Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I said to someone last night it would be a riot if the crowd started "WHAT"ing him if he did a promo with those noises.
Guest BoboBrazil Report post Posted February 26, 2003 It had alot of potential, but him just making that noise is dumb. If he would have started screaming out random sentences and words it might have been good.
Guest TheArchiteck Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I really didn't feel comfortable laughing. I wanted to laugh....but I guess something in my head told me to refrain from it. Everyone in the room was quiet and just looking at each other. I say drop it.

Ok, true, Triple H wasn't BEHIND the attack per se, but, as the leader of Evolution his hands aren't exactly clean. Know what I mean? Goldust presented the idea to creative, right? That's what I heard.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I don't like it. Some things are so bad they're funny...but this was so bad that it was just bad. No payoff in this for me.
Guest wwF1587 Report post Posted February 26, 2003 it was pretty funny.... goldust could've played the character better though
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted February 26, 2003 Another problem: How do they pay this off? I mean even if Goldust beats the shit out of Batista, Orton, Flair and Triple H, he'll still have Tourette's Syndrome. Unless of course he just miraculously gets over it for no explained reason, like Kane got over his speech problems. Or maybe Goldust and Kane can form a tag team after Goldust confides in Kane, since Kane can understand his pain.
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I thought it was one of the dumbest things I'd ever seen. It was horrible acting and didn't seem serious at all.
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I wish Goldust would change his occupation from prowrestling to something else. ANYTHING else.
Guest creativename Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I honestly thought that, despite the lameness of the gimmick, Goldust might actually be able to pull it off and make it entertaining. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Goldust's acting was horrendous and completely unconvincing. The character is neither funny nor drawing of any sympathy, thus making this gimmick completely pointless. BTW, from what I heard, Goldust didn't actually suggest this gimmick; it's just a take on something that he uses on flights to entertain the other wrestlers. Not sure about this though. Guest notJames Report post Posted February 26, 2003 Entertaining or not, serious or not, I think the question begs to be asked: What's the point? I thought Goldust was over enough that he didn't need something like this. How will this translate in the ring? What good does it do for a wrestler when talking during the match is practically nonexistent? If it's for character development, does this lead to Goldust going insane from the ticks until he turns heel again? If he doesn't know he has it, does this turn into a comedy thing with no payoff? If he knows he has it, does he go after Evilution to seek revenge? It's not like Goldust is such a menacing or intimidating character that it would seem plausible for him to attain said revenge on his own. Are we seeing Mankind v2.0? And if so, is Goldust the right character to do it? Or, is Dustin Runnels the right performer for the job on all fronts (acting, wrestling, etc.)? I just don't see how practical this whole scenario is. Perhaps it will flesh itself out in the coming weeks…
Guest crandamaniac Report post Posted February 26, 2003 It had alot of potential, but him just making that noise is dumb. If he would have started screaming out random sentences and words it might have been good. Agreed, I was watching the segment with my brother, and anytime he paused to make one of those noises, I threw in a random sentence. It would have been a lot funnier if he did this Jr: What do you have to say to HHH and his band of thugs? Goldust: Well Jr, All I have to say is that they COCKSUCKERTITTYFUCK! better watch there back.
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted February 26, 2003 It was lame how JR didn't even ask him about it.
Guest Downhome Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I call a new group, including Goldust, Kane, and Tennacious Z. This is obviously a comedic gimmick for Goldust, obviously.
Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2003 It looked stupid and I was embarassed to be watching wrestling at that point in time Why can't anyone watch a show, be it WWE or something else, without wondering what their friends think? I know that if one of Mom's friends was over, I'd act like I always do and just ignore said friend....at least during the show. Then I'd say a few words of greeting before going upstairs to play PS2. Back to the topic...it's just an uncomftorable situation for all involved. It's kinda like racism. If Goldy portrays this as comedy, and the audience finds it amusing...does that mean they're making fun of people with the disease? And I completely agree with notJames. Hell, I don't even think the creative team (if you want to call them 'creative') could answer those questions.
Guest JHawk Report post Posted February 26, 2003 It was lame how JR didn't even ask him about it. He mentioned it subtly though. "Obviously something's wrong here". Which brought in the "as long as I take my medication it will work itself out" bit.
King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2003 How are you supposed to play a serious illness like this well, like this. If it were a T.V show or film, they'd have the actor do his research into the story, so they knew all about it. They'd let them speak to real victims. Goldust? Nope...he's just supposed to twitch and stuff. I don't fault Goldust...I feel sorry for Dustin Runnels. He's been saddled with another bad gimmick, with no prep or nothing. As for the angle...didn't they do something vaguely similar with Perry Saturn a few years ago? I know it wasn't Tourette's Syndrome, but hell it's similar in that Saturn blurted out stuff for no reason...Snausages...that was punishment on him. Sure, this'll give Goldust a bit of a new edge for a while, but in the long run he's getting punished. The only one benifiting from this'll be Booker...till he gets SQUASHED by HHH. Guest jester Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I think it's too early to tell with this gimmick. That interview really only hinted at it. Oh, and please note, nobody has said "Goldust has Tourette's syndrome," so we can't bash them for a lack of taste yet. They will probably never use that phrase, just play it off as Goldust being even more warped after the electrocution.
Guest Trivia247 Report post Posted February 26, 2003 what this is Is NOT a Character change for Goldust.... this is a Character addition...he was always Goldust, he just got shocked into touretts syndrome, its an additional side to goldust which he will deal with.... I dunno where they are going with this, but I hope it plays out.
