Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted February 27, 2003 One day before the start of free agency, some big names are looking for jobs. Stephen Davis (news), Kordell Stewart (news) and Dana Stubblefield (news) became available when they were released by their NFL teams on Wednesday. The free agency period begins after midnight Friday. Also on the market are quarterback Brian Griese (news), who is not a free agent, but who received permission from the Denver Broncos (news) to seek a trade. The agent for Buffalo receiver Peerless Price (news) is hoping to work out a trade after his client signs a one-year tender offer with the Bills. Davis' release was expected. The only player in Redskins history to run for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons, he was due to count $11.4 million against the $74.8 million salary cap. And he didn't really fit into coach Steve Spurrier's offensive schemes. Washington saved $5.2 million this year by cutting Davis. The Redskins also released former starting safety Sam Shade (news) and tight end Walter Rasby (news). Stewart, who lost his starting job in Pittsburgh to NFL Comeback Player of the Year Tommy Maddox, led the Steelers to two AFC championship games. But his inconsistency doomed him. By waiving Stewart, the Steelers cleared $6.3 million of cap room, getting them under the ceiling. "In order for us to comply with the salary cap, we are forced to make some very difficult decisions," coach Bill Cowher said. "He was a terrific player for us and always handled himself as a consummate professional." Stubblefield, in his second tour with San Francisco, comes off a mediocre year and was going to make $2.325 million in 2003. The NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1997, he started 15 games last season, making 43 tackles and three sacks last season. "At times, Dana played very well," general manager Terry Donahue said. "At other times, he struggled, particularly toward the end of the season when his weight got a little higher on him. He was a leader in the locker room, though. He was a great acquisition for us." ... Full Yahoo Article So there you have it. Not that I wasn't expecting the Redskins to release Stephen Davis, but its stupid in my opinion to let a player with his talent just go because they want to save $5 million. Im officially done with the Redskins, after putting up with this same treading water crap for the last 4 years. Oh, as a Ravens fan it makes me happy to see the Steelers putting all of their faith in Tommy Maddox. Stewart wasn't the greatest QB, but they'll probably be wishing they had kept him once the season starts and he either sucks real bad or gets hurt. Theres a huge difference between a back up player playing for the starting spot and the starter playing with no real good backup competition, which the Steelers won't have by dumping Stewart. Guest bravesfan Report post Posted February 27, 2003 But in hindsight, it's $6.3 million of cap room for a BACK-UP QUARTERBACK. Either he's going to get traded (Bledsoe), or he's going to be released. The Steelers will be forced to sink or swim with Maddox, but then don't forget there's always A. Randle-El who's basically a more-talented version of Stewart, with speed and awareness up the yin-yang. Stewart was basically only there to serve as a pet project, nothing more. This was the easiest release of the three.
Guest Flyboy Report post Posted February 27, 2003 Emmitt Smith was also released... or he will be very soon.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted February 27, 2003 emmit should be announced today i happy dance at my team the Steelers dropping "Slush" i sooo hope the pats get Davis (Stephen) but i think Parcells will egt him for Dallas
Guest Choken One Report post Posted February 27, 2003 So where do you guys See Emmitt winding up at? Alot of people believe he try to "Stick it" to Jones and sign with an Divison rival like Philly or Washington. He says he wants to rush to 20,000 yards...If that is his sole purpose, he can easily hop over to an team like Jacksonville or Arizona...Teams that will benefit from having a #22 Smith jersey to sell. However, if he wants to make an run for another Ring...He should look at teams that won't imploy him as their main offense target. Stewart will likely end up in either Chicago or Carolina
Guest converge241 Report post Posted February 27, 2003 washington easy snyder will want him 1) to stick it to jones 2) a star to sell tickets 3) hes a great back for their light emphasis on the run offense as a part time back who they are not dependant on sharing time with betts or whomever else they will play at rb then when/if stephen davis goes to dallas..look out for those Dall- Wash games i think Delhomme will end up in Carolina, but it wouldnt be surprising if they took slash the stupidest rumor is kordell to miami.. they would be nuts to do that, just stick with Fielder
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted February 27, 2003 The only QB to Miami rumor I've heard is if Plummer goes to Denver Griese may go to Miami. I doubt any QB they sign will start over Fiedler, but Miami needs insurance at QB.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted February 27, 2003 on espn insider and such the miami qbs thrown around are stewart and griese they do need insurance ill give them that but neither of those guys (or Plummer) are going to sign to be behind someone..miami should sigh that doug jhnson in atlanta.. thats a solid backup
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted February 27, 2003 Stephen Davis would run into a toxic waste dump if he signed with Dallas. Their QB is awful and their O-line is almost awful. Davis could not do it on his own. He is not young anymore and I think he would more likely end up on the Patriots, or the Texans.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted February 27, 2003 Plummer would probably be ok with a backup role on a good team with good coaching that could save his career.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted February 27, 2003 Dolphins fan checking in. Kordell on the Dolphins? Only if he agreed to be the backup, and even then I'd be leery. It'd be an upgrade over Ray Lucas, who practically single-handedly cost us a playoff spot w/ his 1st 3 games filling in for Fiedler.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted February 27, 2003 Well Emmit Smith just had the press conferance and is no longer with the Cowboys. I say Emmit goes to Fox or CBS as an announcer.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted February 27, 2003 Emmit's not retiring so he's not going to be an announcer. In this Press Conference Emmit is making as much sense as Warrior. It's headache inducing.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted February 27, 2003 Kordell was done in Pittsburgh. I hope he can jump-start his career elsewhere, but $6+ million and the pinch the Steelers were in? That was the right call. They'll probably look for a QB of the future this season/draft...
Guest MrRant Report post Posted February 27, 2003 Emmitt will play for a season get the mark and then join Aikman on FOX. I love free agency and the draft.... its just the months of nothing inbetween that and the preseason that drive me insane.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted February 27, 2003 Emmitt will play for a season get the mark and then join Aikman on FOX. It'll take Emmitt more than one season to break 20,000 yards if that's the mark you're referring to.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted February 28, 2003 Lion's also cut Desmond Howard... Does that have to hurt a guy's ego when THE LIONS! don't want him?
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted February 28, 2003 Emmitt says he wants to start for two more years and thinks he is capable of getting 1,200 yards in a season. I don't know about all that but I think he is still capable of being a decent rusher. Desmond Howard should hang it up. He's been a bust, and the only reason he's hung around as long as he has is because of his Super Bowl MVP. Kordell should go to Chicago, he'll start there guaranteed. Chicago is crazy if they go after Shaun King as rumored. He's no better then Jim Miller or Shane Mathews or any other bum that's gone out for them in the last few seasons. Desmond...I loved watching him at Michigan, but he's just one of those guys now who's just barely good enough to make a team.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted February 28, 2003 If Emmitt goes to a team with a good QB and a good Offensive line it's possible that he could get the 1300 yards that he claims he can. Outside of that scenario he'll get 1000 if he's lucky.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted February 28, 2003 what the hell is Cleveland thinking? miller, holmes, and rudd all gone i know they are hopefull to resign them but if i was miller or holmes id go to another team easy
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted February 28, 2003 what the hell is Cleveland thinking? miller, holmes, and rudd all gone All three were high priced and other than Miller because of injury they all underacieved last year. And Miller coming off a destroyed achilles is too much f a question mark for his big price tag this year. I'm sure they will look at the top LB fas since there's some good young ones this year. However they also probably have confidence in the LBs they drafted last year. Also they have a new Defensive coordinator so maybe those three didn't fit his philosophy. I believe Campo favors speed LBs and other than Miller our starters weren't all that speedy. He's probably also been trained in the Jerry Jones school of most LBs aren't worth big money. Guest Dangerous A Report post Posted March 1, 2003 The Redskins won't go for Emmitt. They just traded some scrub I can't think of off the top of my head and a fourth round pick to St Louis for Trung Canidate.

Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted March 1, 2003 Oh boy. The Redskins are really going to improve by trading for Trung Candidate. Actually, I suppose signing the 2 FA Guards (Randy Thomas and Dave Fiore) was a good move though.
