My first C on a paper...

Recommended Posts

Guest papacita

Ok, I just got a 71 on a Criminal Justice book review/research paper today and I am PISSED THE FUCK OFF!!!!!! Now I'm not usually one to bitch about grades, but a FUCKING 71??!!! There is no way in hell that I should've got a 71. They're saying that a TA did the grading...I dunno whether it's true or not, but I don't understand how she can take off for having too broad a thesis (in a glorified book review) and at the same time take off for being too narrow in my focus on the book. That's bullshit! And to make things worst, this is probably the paper I've put the most work in since I started college, and it's received the lowest grade (I normally don't get below an A). Oh well, I'm done boring you, I just needed to vent.

Man, when I was in high school, a 71 was a D-, and a 70 would be an F. (EDIT: Never mind... I see that you're in college now. I sometimes get you confused with Flyboy :bonk: ) Anyway... I assume you have your paper saved on your computer. Maybe you could post it. I don't know enough about the subject to critique it, but I'd like to read it, and there may be someone who can offer opinions as to why it should or should not have received that grade.

If they're saying a TA did the grading, maybe ask the professor to take a look at the paper. It couldn't hurt, and if he/she agrees, then you'll probably get a higher grade (I doubt they'd lower it).

A C??? Damn, if I got a 'C' on my reports/papers, I'd be happy as fuck. Well, I'm in high school so perhaps the grades differ. I'd read the paper if you posted it, by the way.

Oh just cry me a river, Mary. I coasted through high school with a C average. C+ average thank you very much.

71 is a D-??? That sounds fucked up, because from what I always understood an 80+ is A, 70-79 is B, 60-69 is C, a 50-59 is a D, and anything below is an F where you failed and you actually had to take the course again. I've never heard of getting a 70 and failing a course because of it.

Anyways, I never tried in Grade nine and ten, and didn't really understand the "system". Now that I'm in grade 11, I think I could pull a 90 average. I'd like to echo Spiff's sentiments, and how you should show the paper to the prof. It's always worth a shot.

Lucky you. It's probably Math (D at the moment) and Science (solid, undeniable F) that's bring my grade down. 'Course, I'm not good at averages.

I was lucky in high school. I sucked at math, but was able to get A's and B's because the teacher was a bad teacher. On tests, she felt it was unfair of her to decide how many points you should get for the work you did on a wrong answer, so she would give everyone half credit if they just put an answer. That, of course meant a 50% was guaranteed on any test even if I had everything wrong. Plus, most of the grade of the class was gotten from taking notes and writing down homework assignments. High school was too pathetically easy for me.

And I would check with the teacher. Those TA's are usually either really lenient or really strict. Luckily, I usually end up with the lenient, stoner TA's checking my papers.

Where the hell is that? The breakdown I've always had was:

90-100 - A

80-89 - B

70-79 - C

60-69 - D

59-under - F

This semester is pretty much a cakewalk for me.

I'm coasting through Spanish II with a 99 (my teacher: "OMG THE HIGHEST GRADE I'VE EVER HAD~")

Algebra II is simple, and I have a 100+.

Health...no comment (99)

AP Bio, a very high B. Although I just got a 69 on a test today, which I didn't study for.

As for research papers, last semester for English I wrote one on the current "downfall" of WWE (hey, pick a topic you're interested in~) and I got a 94 on it.

I'm in a system right now like this:

100-90: A

89-80: B

79-75: C

74-70: D

69 and under: F

Another odd fact: Our stuff is changed into a 4.0 GPA scale, where a 95=4.0, a 96=4.1, and a 94= 3.9. So there you could have a 4.5 averages. And, honors classes get one point added, and AP classes get two. I got a 6.3 average in AP Stats, and a 5.5 in AP English.

But what's really interesting is 75 is 2.0. In normal classes, you could drop one point (70-69) and drop from a 1.5 to a 0 gpa. But if you're in an AP class, it goes from a 3.5 to a 0.

Well, I think it's interesting, but I'm a nerd, with no life. And there are about two people on the board who can back that up.

I've noticed, at my university in Buffalo, that American professors tend to use the 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B etc system, whereas Canadian professors tend to have a much lower A threshold (usually around 84).

In high school, I pretty much always had a B-/C+ average (although I flat out FAILED Chemestry in 10th grade). Back then, a 71 was more like a D-, and 69 or below was an F. I've been holding down a 3.8 GPA since I started college, though.

As for the paper, I talked to the prof after class, and I'm supposed to meet with him after spring break (next week) to discuss the paper, so hopefully things will work out. Apparently, more than half the class failed, so I guess I'm lucky. If I find the disk, I'll post the paper to see what you think (it's not perfect, but it's no 71 damn it ).

Looking at your guys grade system is weird, because mine is pretty different:

86-100-A (4.0)

81-85-B+ (3.5)

73-80-B (3.0)

66-72-C+ (2.5)

60-65-C (2.0)

55-59-D (1.0)

54-under F (0.0)

And my grade point average is 4.0.

My grade system in HS is:

< than 65: F : 0 GPA

65-67: D- : 1 GPA

68-69: D : 1.33 GPA

70-73: C- : 1.66 GPA

74-76: C : 2.0 GPA

77-79: C+ : 2.33 GPA

80-83: B- : 2.66 GPA

84-86: B : 3.0 GPA

87-89: B+: 3.33 GPA

90-93: A- : 3.66 GPA

94-96: A : 4.0 GPA

> than 97: A+ : 4.33 GPA

On the GPA scale, AP weighted as 1.1 to 1, Honors 1.05 to 1, so if you have an A (4 GPA) in an AP class, it becomes an A+ (4.4) or a B in a AP class becomes a borderline B+.

In high school, I've had around an average of 3.15 (B/B+). My highest GPA was a 3.87 (A-/A). The valedictorian had a GPA of 4.5 (!!!).

Next year, I'm going to college upstate (SUNY Albany, most likely).

You must have written a pretty average paper to get a 70. You could post it and let people look at it. Seriously, on any particular paper I actually work on, I don't expect to get less than an A, and I mean seriously work on it. I'm talking multiple days work to craft something signifigant. I'm really good at writing papers, so I'd love to give you some pointers if I could see you paper.

I don't think it's fair to call someone a crybaby if they complain about a mark on a test. I would bitch too if I got a 71 on a paper I worked hard on. But, that could just be me.

Its called Ontario...

We lived in a fucked up province when you have a fucked up education problem, and take three tests plus a school to get your drivers license...

this happens when you get a progressive conservative premier...

90-100 - A+

85-89 - A

73-76 - B

70-72 - B-

57-59 - D+

53-56 - D

God damn. I wanna go to a Canadian university. I'd have a 4.0 like nobody's business.

My high school was pretty hardcore as far as grades go. They've changed to the standard 10-points-per-level system, but when I attended, it was 94-100 for an A, and 86-93 for a B. Under 70 was an F, and 85 was a C+. And in Ontario, that'd be an A. MADNESS.

What I meant was, those percentages were looked upon as an actual grade. They never gave anything but a percentage (Which is probably the best way to go about it), but if you were to have an average of 85, you would say you pretty much had an 'A' average. It makes the standards a little higher, as since there is more room to get an A, obtaining that 80% is a different story. On top of that, if you go to a school where you deserve a B and are given an 84 (like certain systems pointed out in this thread), you would be getting a higher mark for less intelligence, or something.

Whatever, a PC is like a Replubican, or close to it. An outright Republican is the Canadian Alliance, with Stockwell Day. That guy was a loser.

In the great Northeast of the U S of A, our grade system worked like this when I was in HS

90-100 A

80-89: B

70-79: C

64.5-69: D

0-64.4: F

"Health...no comment (99)"

At my school, Health is a required course, and since it's obviously so important, a football coah is teaching it. By "teaching", I mean, he reads a lesson and we take a quiz on it. And by "reads" I mean he stumbles over simple words and skips over the important ones (only onw he asks me to pronounce them for him since I can break words like "appendicular" down-swear to God my HEALTH TEACHER couldn't read appendicular). Since it's so worthless, we just cheat on the quizzes now. That's right, at school I CHEAT TO WIN~!
