From the AP~

KUWAIT -- British television networks said Tuesday there were reports of an uprising against President Saddam Hussein in Iraq's second city of Basra.

ITN television journalist Richard Gaisford told the Sky news channel that British troops were attacking Saddam's forces to try to help the reported uprising in Basra.

"We're being told by military intelligence officers with the Royal Scottish Dragoon Guards battle groups that there has been a popular uprising this afternoon in the city of Basra and that, as a result of that, Iraqi troops still based in the city are firing mortar rounds ... on the uprisers," Gaisford said.

"The British forces' response to that is to send heavy artillery rounds on to those mortar positions," he added.

A British spokesman said local sources also said people in Basra were fighting Saddam supporters.

Do you think the Kurds and similar dissidents can play a role similar to the Northern Alliance?

Some more info on Basra, from the Wires

In the early hours of the invasion, military commanders had hoped that Basra's population would welcome the invading forces.

Instead, resistance by irregular and other forces has kept British troops from securing the city and paving the way for the flow of relief operations.

And in an about-face, a British spokesman told reporters, "We are seizing tactical opportunities as they occur on our terms."

Still, the spokesman, Col. Chris Vernon, described a situation of enormous difficulty. "We are not firing into the center of the city because we cannot risk the collateral damage to civilians, even though we are being fired on by their artillery," he said.

In addition, Vernon said Iraqi troops are using the local population as human shields, marching them toward the British troops, then firing from behind them before retreating.

The last part doesn't suprise me.

Let's hope the uprising is a success, and the citizens inside Baghad do the same thing or Iraqi officals become worried about an uprising and give up.

A Reuters correspondent says at least 30 Iraqis who may have been on their way to reinforce the city of Nassiriya are killed in what appeared to be a bombing raid by U.S.-led forces.

Cowardly or not, they're doing what they can to win this conflict against overwhelming odds. It makes things more difficult for us, like the fake surrenders, but they're pulling out any and all stops to fight us off. I honestly can't blame them for trying everything they can think of.

They CAN'T win this war. They cannot ever win this war. Even if their soldiers were on par with our soldiers, we could wipe baghdad off the map easily. They're not fighting a realistic war.

Ok, now that that's established, what they are doing is inhumane, at least regarding civilian shields. I doubt that these shields are volunteers. Doing this, burning the oil wells, and using chemical weapons is just going to help Saddam lose the political war, which was the only war he ever had the chance of winning.

We'd still have probably gone in unilaterally, but the point is he is ruining world support by doing things like this. Not that I care what the hell he does, if he choses to slaughter his own citizens with our guns, what else can we do? He's never been a good leader anyways...

Got a kick out of an IRANIAN vessel intercepting an Iraqi speedboat packed full of explosives that was apparently looking for a Coalition vessel to ram. I guess they're going to try to get off the "Axis of Evil" list.

Well just file this event away, because you can be sure once Iraq is conquered, Bush n' co. will start beating the drums of war, just replacing Iraq with Iran.

Somehow I really don't see that happening. I can't provide a good reason (other than this particular report), but it just doesn't seem that way to me. Pure opinion.

Yes, because stopping 1 Iraqi speedboat excuses buying nuclear technology.

Nah, North Korea is next, although that's going to be fought among the diplomats (THAT'S going to be interesting). Watching guys in 3 piece suits pimp slap each other while muttering about WMDs and "grave differences" oughta be a show.

Good for us.

When a country is firing on its own refugees, they had best NOT say that we're trying to "exterminate" their people.

WE shouldn't return to the U.N.

I've heard Syria mentioned as a possible next target as well.

As for Iran: Wasn't it an Iraqi missile that exploded near one of their oil refineries? It wounded two people, but I remember there was some argument as to if the missile was a U.S. Tomahawk or an Iraqi missile, and I remember seeing that they had confirmed that it was an Iraqi missile. If it was Iraqi I bet they'd love to get a little payback by getting one of their speedboats. Maybe they'll get some more planes too (in 1991 Iraqi planes sought safety in Iran. The Iranians sent the piolts back and kept the planes).

I agree, the fact Iraq is saying we're trying to exterminate the Iraqi people, and calling us Terrorist is completely bullshit..I guess the fact they killed 5,000 Kurds(right?) keeps slipping the minds of the Iraqi goverment. I can't believe the nerve of that goverment..I don't think the US should return to the UN either, they've already proved themselves to be a bunch of cowards, Iraq had these many years to disarm and the UN does nothing, not one thing to make them disarm.

All of Iran's purchases are under IAEA surveillance, and no sanctions prohibit them. North Korea is a totally different story, of course.

“The second type you have at these parades seems to be the people who want to mislabel Hitler. Everybody in the world is Hitler. Bush is Hitler, Ashcroft is Hitler, Rumsfeld is Hitler. The only guy who isn't Hitler is the foreign guy with a mustache dropping people who disagree with him into the wood chipper. He's not Hitler.”--- Dennis Miller on Jay Leno

Great observation - on target, completely impervious, and so very true. Classic Miller.

Some more wartime humour:

Republic of Iraq Annexed by State of Frantic Denial

Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf denied reports that U.S. Army and Marine forces were in the Iraqi capital... saying the Republican Guard has control of Saddam International Airport after fighting a fierce battle.

"Today we slaughtered them in the airport. They are out of Saddam International Airport," al-Sahaf said. "The force that was in the airport, this force was destroyed... their casualties and bodies are many. Their equipment and vehicles, several were destroyed."

Al-Sahaf said he would take reporters to the airport later in the day, after it was cleaned up.

The whole thing reminds me of the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail...

"Look you stupid bastard, you've got no arms left!"

"Yes I have."

"LOOK!"

"It's just a flesh wound."

"Look, stop that!"

"Chicken! Chicken!"

"Look, I'll have your leg!"

<SLASH>

"Right!  I'll do you for that!"

"You'll what?"

"Come here!"

"What're you going to do, bleed on me?!"

Iraqi Information Minister and UN Ambassador, I salute you!

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/world/Prime...main030403.html

And even as U.S. forces were positioned around Baghdad, Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al Sahaf dismissed reports of coalition troops closing in on the capital as "silly."

"They are nowhere near Baghdad," al Sahaf told a news conference in the capital today. "Their allegations are a cover-up for their failure."

Everybody focuses on Saddam and his sons. But I want to give props to Iraq's Info Minister, Mohammed Saeed al Sahaf and Iraq's UN Ambassador Mohammed Aldouri.

If our Current Events forum had a yearly Joseph Goebbels Award, I think, even though it's early in the year, I would nominate them for the 2003 award (some of you probably would nominate Ari Fleischer).

Their devotion to Saddam and the government, and having to say the same thing over and over when they know that reality is altogether different should be rewarded. Yes, the devotion is very much misplaced, and neither appears to be on the same level of bastardness or importance as Joseph Goebbels, but then few have the ability to be so these days.

The UN Ambassador Mohammed Aldouri, has had to deal with Jesse Jackson and then Al Sharpton over the past two days. To be a foreign government official and do that and not put a bullet through the back of your head is amazing.

Out of all the people involved in this war Mohammed Saeed al Sahaf is beyond a shadow of a doubt my favourite.

I watch the news and I get annoyed by the coalition propoganda and I start wanting to rage against the machine. Then I see Saddam or one of his fuckwad sons and they piss me off even more and I start raging for the machine and calling in air strikes.

Then Mohammed Saeed al Sahaf comes on, and does his bit with a totally straight face and I'm rolling on the floor giggling. He just cracks me up. I hope we don't kill him, I want him to get his own cable TV show where he comes on around 8pm every night and denies random things that happened during the day. I mean, fuck, it's not like he's going to have his current job for much longer anyway.

We've entered the presidential compound. The Ministry of Information building has also been occupied.

Apparently, the U.S. Army has pulled the plug on the Wacky Iraqi Variety Hour. They didn't even get to do a season finale. It will be missed.

I want to see the Iraqi Information Minister being dragged away while saying that Iraq is still laying massive casualties on the foreign invaders and driving them back to the Gulf.
