I have a regular GBA... I prefer the one I have to the SP, because it seems easier to hold (SP seems a little too small, but I haven't held one yet, so I dunno), but I wish the regular GBA was backlit like the SP... god dammit!

Yeah but if you remember that the Gamecube launched (To Dismal Sales) as well on a Sunday.

GBA Sp is gonna be huge. Built in battery and Backlight, c'mon what kid in america won't want that?

I know. I'm so pissed that they released this shit. This is what the damn GBA should have been from the start. Maybe not a built-in battery, but for god sakes, it should have been backlit.

I agree. Nintendo has always been ass backwards about hardware. And they rarely innovate anymore.

I held a GBA SP when I went into KB Toys. It's pretty amazing how compact it is. When I opened it up and "played" on it for a bit (it was a non-working sample), it felt alright in my hands and the shoulder triggers were manageable. It's kinda like playing a hybrid of the controllers of the original Game Boy and the SNES.

I'll probably pick one up on the first system price drop. I want one, but I don't want one that badly.

The only problem I have with the GBA SP is that the D-Pad is still too small. I also think that Nintendo is trying to get the people who play games on cell phones to buy the new GBA SP since it looks like a flip phone and is silver. I'll wait till it gets more colors and a price drop, its not worth $99.95 to me.

Well it came out last night for me. A local Target got there's in and decided to break release date. So Software Etc. was like "Hey we can do it to!" and on top of that Software Etc. called Wal-Mart and was like "Hey guess what those jackasses did!? We'll all do it to!"

It was insane.......

I dunno........but all the stores were like kids. My friend works at wal-mart and he said they were all calling each other and telling them that they're selling it.

Hope they enjoy $100 fine on each one sold! Boo-Yah!

I work at Target myself, and our cost on the damn thing is like 86.50. So each one sold before the SD, The store loses $186.50 instead of making of a nice $13.50 profit. I'm not an economics major, but that's fuckin' STUPID. :bonk:

I picked one up today.

I love the backlit screen, I love the flip screen design and the small size... but my main complaint is the control pad.

First of all, when flipped open the screen is heavier than the base of the system with the buttons. So because of this, it feels heavy when playing it. Also, the side with the buttons is also a bit to thin, and feels weird when holding it. The system needs some bulk in there so it feels like a controler!

As for the D-Pad... the Game Boy Color D-Pad owns this one in every way possible IMO. I understand that it needs to be like that so the screen doesn't touch it, but I don't like it.

Now I'm not saying it's bad, because the system is not bad... it still rules! It just will take some getting use to. Totally worth it for a backlit screen so I can play it on long car trips in the dark and stuff. But overall, the control pad side needs some more bulk so it's heavier and easier to grip, and the D-Pad needs to be more like the GBC D-Pad, and this thing would be perfect.

The screen itself looks beautiful... I don't think i can ever go back to playing an old Game Boy again. Well... atleast until the GB Player comes out.

And BTW, I picked mine up at Target today (did not need a presell, they had a few boxed with both colors available), and I also got a free copy of Driver 2 Advance with it. And to think I would going to go to Best Buy for the free Carying Case deal they had going...

The GB Player (or Game Boy Player) will come out in May for the Game Cube, attach to the bottom, and allow you to play your Game Boy games on your Gamecube. Similar to the Super Game Boy, but way better

The GBA SP is not backlit.

It's front-lit (that flip-top). You're going to be very disappointed when you find out that it isn't. People think it is backlit because of the rumors of a backlit GBA being in the works.

In fact, OFF A POLL RIGHT FROM NINTENDO.COM it says:

"What game are you dying to play on your new front-lit GBA SP?"

Hell, the tech specs on the GBA SP:

"LIGHT SOURCE Front light integrated with LCD"

OK... so let's say it's front-lit. Does it make a difference as far as quality of the image on the screen?

Basically, what's the difference between back & front lit?

After reading that, I think I'll be sticking with my regular GBA.

The Game Gear was backlit. That thing ate batteries like Big Show at an all you can eat buffet (And 6 AA batteries at a time for that matter)..while you could easily see it in the dark and the graphics were all nice and bright, I could barely play the stupid thing more than 5 or 6 hours before I had to replace 6 (SIX!!) AA batteries. I broke down and got an AC adapter but that totally defeated the point of having a portable handheld system. That was the first and only non nintendo system I ever bought (I had a gameboy at the time, one from the initial launch in 1989 and it still worked fine up until like 1997 or so)

Im not to into the whole gameboy thing, but Im coming to terms with the fact that its Nintendo's most profitable item and I dont think Sony or Microsoft will ever be able to stick their nose into the handheld market.

One of my original ideas behind why the gamecube disks were small was because Nintendo was developing a Gameboy that could play gamecube discs..which would be the next logical step, but it would obviously cost too much for Nintendo's target audience for the Game Boy.

backlit: Lit from the back.

frontlit: Lit from the front.

The backlit ones--for example, the Game Gear, are easier to see in poor lighting conditions. It looks like this one just lights it at the front of the screen very closely. I have a light accessory for my regular GBA, and that works basically the same as this.

MarvinisaLunatic: As a proud former Game Gear owner, I know what you went through--although I stuck with a rechargable power pack myself. However, technology has far improved since then, because the GG was little more than a portable Master System, but the GBA is far more powerful and runs on 2 AAs.

Plus, the SP runs on a built-in rechargable battery pack, so that point doesn't really matter.

The light is underneath the screen though, so there wouldnt be any glare on the screen like I used to get with my gameboy and the light that stuck on top of it.

GameBoy Player Info from PGC:

After more than a year of fans requesting a legitimate way to play GBA software on their TV screens, Nintendo has announced the GameCube Game Boy Player (rough translation, official US name pending). The device is a square platform that attaches to the bottom of the GameCube hardware, plugging into the High-Speed data port in the back. Game cartridges are inserted into a slot on the front.

The device comes with a GameCube disc that contains the GBA emulator, and of course, it supports Game Boy and Game Boy Color games in additon to Game Boy Advance software. Games can be played with the GameCube's own controller, or if you hook up your GBA to the system with the already-released GC-GBA Link Cable, you can play with the actual Game Boy Advance controls.

Up to four players can play multiplayer games through a standard GBA link port included on the front of the device. You'll also be able to create a mini-LAN by linking together multiple GameCubes, each with a GameCube Game Boy Player.

The GameCube Game Boy Player will be released in Japan in March 2003 for 5,000 yen (about $40 USD), and in North America in May 2003 with no price announced yet. European and Australian launches are planned thereafter, but no dates or prices have been set for those territories. Nintendo will release it in various colors to match your GameCube.

The Game Boy Player will be released in Japan on March 21, 2003.

Now I still have my old Game Boy games stashed somewhere, and it might be cool for a while to play them..but I dont think Im going to bother..

Guest Jobber of the Week

Got one today.

I recently put it next to my Afterburnered GBA, and the SP's light was much better. It looked more... even, I guess. A bit brighter, also.

As an owner of the GBAsp, I can tell you that I am not disappointed at all in the front lit screen. It looks great, and I can play it with it being pitch dark in the room I am in.

Obviously Nintendo went with the front lit screen for a reason, my guess is longer batter life.

I picked up my GBA SP yesterday and I have to say, I'm quite pleased with it. The light works perfectly. I sat in a totally dark room and played Crash Bandicoot: N-Tranced for hours with no problem at all. Some people have said they don't like the D-pad, but I haven't found it to be a hindrance. Overall, it was well worth the purchase price to me.
