Storyline vs Wrestling

Recommended Posts

Guest Dmann2000

Okay what made me a wrestling fan was the Mega-powers break-up on SNME. It wasn't the actual match (against the Twin Towers) but the surrounding story, Elizabeth knockout out, Hogan abandoms Savage and takes her to the back, Savage slaps Hogan and leaves, attacks Hogan with the belt in the back. I saw that and I was hooked.

See, it was a storyline/angle that hooked me. I didn't watch a particular match a go "wow that's cool".

Could it be that if it was something outside of the ring that brought you to watching wrestling, that you're not as focused on in-ring action. That as long as the story's good, less then good wrestling doesn't bug you?

Which brought you in, was it a wrestling match or a wrestling angle?

It was a match. Ted Dibiase vs. Randy Savage on Saturday Night's Main Event in March 1988. Dibiase won by CO after Andre beat up Savage on the outside.

These two immediately became my favourite wrestlers until later in the summer when the Rougeaus turned heel and Mr. Perfect showed up.

Angle.

I got into wrestling in 92 right around the WrestleMania timeframe. By the early part of the summer my two favorites were the British Bulldog and Bret Hart. The buildup to Summer Slam hooked me in and made me a full-time fan. Watching the match on CHV a few months later blew my 11 year old mind.

Match

I started watching wrestling around the summer of '87 off and on, but what really hooked me and made me a fan for life was Flair vs. Steamboat best two out of three falls at the Clash in '89.

In the summer of 91, my friend sat me down and had me watch WM6 from start to finish.

I was hooked from then on.

Wasn't really a match. I was just watching it and started following WCW.

The buildup to Bret v. DBS also got me hardcore into WWF

Storyline drew me BACK to wrestling...

I watched as a Mark from Mid 80's to Mid 90's and Got tired of Wrestling since it was boring me...

However, Austin "Anti-Authority" brought me back in for good 1997.

Angle.

The Austin-McMahon feud got me into wrestling.

Oh, and I shit you not, after months of not watching in 2001, what drew me back in? The Invasion. So I can't hate it as much because of that.

Match

Rey Mysterio v.s Dean Malenko. July of 1996. I started watching to see more of Rey, and then it evolved to watching for the nWo, and now here I am today.

An early episode of Raw in summer 1993. Shawn Michaels was defending the IC title against Hacksaw Jim Duggan. I was pulling hard for Duggan to win the title and he almost had it won but Shawn ran away and drew the CO. I was pissed, but they announced a re-match for the following week, I couldn't wait to see it. I was hooked by such an unmemorable match.

No match in particular, but wrestling definitely got me hooked. If I had to pick one match in particular, I'd say Bret/Perfect from SS 91.

That wasn't such a bad match. I remember watching that and knowing Duggan didn't have a chance in hell of winning the title - but I had to question that from time to time. The lumberjack rematch was pretty decent too.

1st Angle that Hooked me...

Halloween Havoc 1992(Sting vs Jake Roberts...too bad the match sucked)

1st Match that Hooked me...

IC Title: British Bulldog© vs Shawn Michaels from the Final SNME. Michaels whips Bulldog into the exposed steel post and pins him. I had it on tape but taped over it with Rescue 911...*sigh*

Ah, the good ole days.

I remember watching the mini movie for Havoc 92 that the Preview channel would run all the time. Once my dad came down to the basement before going to bed, saw it, thought I was watching some cheesy R-rated movie on Cinemax, and told me to turn the channel to something else.

HBK / Bulldog was devestating. Davey Boy was my favorite at the time and I HATED Michaels with a passion for "stealing" the belt.

The 1989 Royal Rumble

Demolition drawing 1 & 2 and, after a standoff and a moment of wondering, "Will the partners collide?", they proceed to beat the snot out of each other until Andre comes in.

Great moment when I was 8.

Wrestler, actually. Shawn Michaels.

My best friend (when I was ten years old) just adored him, and so, I watched Monday Night RAW with her. This was during his feud with Bulldog, and I found it all wildly entertaining.

Duggan was in a similiar match vs. Randy Savage in MSG when he tried to win his crown back in late 1989. It's on CV's Mega Matches. When I first saw it, I knew Duggan never did regain the crown, but during the match I started to second-guess myself and thought that maybe Duggan did regain the crown afterall. It wasn't a great technical match, but the drama was top notch.

I don't remember specifically anymore. Probably a storyline, since I got in back around when WCW was big, I think. Hell I don't even remember that much. Stopped watching for a while, came back.

I remember exactly what it was that got me into wrestling for good. It was WMIII and i was mostly anticipating the Andre vs. Hogan match, but when i saw Steamboat vs. Savage with all the great technical wrestling and near falls, i was hanging off my seat. That match hooked me for life

A wrestler (Bret Hart) brought me in as a fan. Storylines kept me intrigued as a younger fan. Now, the actual wrestling and love for it keeps me a fan.

The Mega Powers Exploding made me a fan. I was officially hooked during the Feb 1989 Main Event NBC special. I pulled for Savage in that feud since it really did seem like Hogan was stealing Elizabeth away. Plus, I was the smallest one in my class and Savage was a midget compared to most everyone else, yet he was the WWF Champion.

I was also a SUPER mark for The Hart Foundation and Demolition. Later in 1989, I saw SummerSlam 1988 for the first time, and boy was I conflicted during the Tag Title match.

Well, it was kind of a storyline/match mix.

Back in late June/early July 1998, it was supposed to be Kane vs. Mankind vs. Undertaker for the #1 contendership at Summerslam. I was flipping channels and came upon it, and stayed since my friends told me how cool Austin was. So I'm watching Kane vs. Mankind, Kane wins, and unmasks to be Undertaker.

I was hooked from then on, thinking that "anything could happen." However, during 1998, I watched WCW more than WWF.

The whole who's corner will Mr Perfect be in angle in the Savage vs Warrior match at Summerslam 92, along with the Bret - Bulldog angle made me a fan. Lost interest in 94-95 (along with many others) and HBK's title run along with the nWo brought be back in 1996.

I've pretty much always watched wrestling, because my parents used to watch it, but what made me a fan was when HBK threw Marty thru the window of the Barber Shop. I wanted to see Marty get his revenge so badly.
