Firstly, stay the FUCK away from Dream-Quest of Unknown Kaddath, At the Mountains of Madness, The Shadow Out of Time, and Through the Gates of the Silver Key until you've read a helluva lot of H.P., cuz those stories basically give away the entire game behind his entire mythos. It's a lot more fun to piece it together bit by bit rather than have it all dropped in your lap at once. Recommendations: 1. The Colour out of Space. This is considered by many to be Lovecraft's best work ever, and it's oddly set outside his normal backstory of ancient gods, set in relatively modern times. A good starter. 2. The Outsider and The Statement of Randolph Carter: two really short little stories that area good introduction into Lovecraft's detailed and creepy backstory. 3. The Shadow Over Innsmouth. This is the story that inspired most of the movie Dagon, and is a good intense read. 4. In the Walls of Eryx: a chilling sci-fi story that Lovecraft co-wrote, about a spaceman who is stuck inside a maze... with invisible walls. 5. The Lurking Fear: probably the best example of Lovecraft's bizarre obsession with and fear of human de-evolution. That'll get you started, and from there on, it's all gravy. And if you like his stuff, try to find (if you can, he's pretty rare) some work by an author called William Hope Hodgson. How simalar is their work? If I like one, am I pretty much guaranteed to like the other? I've only read a few stories from Lovecraft, I'm just doing this for my father, who doesent have a computer or a phone. I just wanted to give him something to do. Guest Suicide King Report post Posted March 26, 2003 I would disagree with some minor details there, but Zsasz surely knows his shit. That said, my pick for best Lovecraft ever would have to be At the Mountains of Madness to be possibly rivalled by The Shadow Over Innsmouth, but surely there are many many other good ones as well. The actual Call of Cthulhu is a great starter read for the novice Lovecraft fan, as is any of his tiny little 20 page or less reads like Dagon. I wouldn't worry too much about getting lost in the mythology, particularly if you give yourself a good grounding by reading teh shorter ones first and working your way up to the novellas that really give you the juicy stuff. While there, he discovers the skeletal remains of Edwin Lillibridge and the Shining Trapezohedron. Blake accidentally summons the Haunter of the Dark by staring into the depths of the stone. Lovecraft) 3 - The Peaslee Expedition discovers the first of the half buried blocks. Nathaniel recognizes the block and the hieroglyphics that adorn it from those in his dreams. Lovecraft) July During the first week of the month, Nathaniel Peaslee develops an unaccountable mixed feeling of the area to his northeast. He takes the habit of going on long walks toward that area at night. (The Shadow Out of Time, H.P. Lovecraft) Citizens of Providence, Rhode Island who live near the Free-Will Church begin to whisper of the stirrings, bumpings, and scrapings inside the church ever since Blake violated it. (The Haunter of the Dark, H.P. Lovecraft) 11 - Nathaniel Peaslee discovers a block belonging to the dark masonry of the Flying Polyps during one of his nocturnal walks. (The Shadow Out of Time, H.P. Lovecraft) 12 - Peaslee takes Dyer, Freeborn, Boyle, and his son out to find the dark basalt block he discovered the night before with no luck. (The Shadow Out of Time, H.P. Lovecraft) 16-17 - A thunderstorm hits Providence, Rhode Island and put's the city's lights out for an entire hour. Those living near the Free-Will Church describe vicious flopping and bumping in the main building of the church during this absence of light. (The Haunter of the Dark, H.P. Lovecraft) 17 - The Journal carries the story of the noises in the Free-Will Church. Reporters of the Bulletin enter the Free-Will church to investigate, and find the area in shambles, a terrible odor everywhere, and bits of yellow stain and charring. They do not find the skeleton or the Shining Trapezohedron in the tower. (The Haunter of the Dark, H.P. Lovecraft) 18 - Nathaniel Peaslee discovers the absolute truth of what happened to him during his spell of amnesia. He finds access to the city of his dreams and discovers the library where his own recollections of earth’s history has been stored for over 150,000,000 years. On his way out, he is chased by a Flying Polyp and barely escapes with his life. (The Shadow Out of Time, H.P. Lovecraft) 30 - Robert Blake sleepwalks and awakes to find himself opening the trapdoor that leads into the upper tower of the Free-Will Church. In the following week, Blake takes his food by telephone and ties cords around his legs in knots tight enough to waken him if he tries to sleepwalk again. (The Haunter of the Dark, H.P. Lovecraft) August 8 - A great thunderstorm breaks around Providence, Rhode Island. (The Haunter of the Dark, H.P. Lovecraft) 9 - At just prior to 1 a.m., Robert Blake attempts to telephone the power company, but the lines are dead. At 2:12 a.m., the lights go out all over Providence. Watchers around the Free-Will Church stand vigil with candles under umbrellas, but great gusts of winds blow the candles out. At 2:35 a.m, the Haunter of the Dark bursts from its confines in the church and rushes to Blake. A great blast of lightning banishes the beast, but not before Blake is killed. (The Haunter of the Dark, H.P. Lovecraft) Doctor Dexter investigates the church and finds the Shining Trapezohedron, along with numerous forbidden tomes. He tosses the stone into the deepest channel of the Narragansett Bay and keeps the volumes in his own library. (The Haunter of the Dark, H.P. Guest jm29195 Report post Posted March 9, 2005 I've just been reading some of Lovecraft's short stories and am very impressed by 'The Dunwich Horror' and 'The Rats in the Walls'.... I'm also a big fan of the two (that I know of) short stories that Stephen King has written that were obviously influenced by Lovecraft, can't remember the titles though, can anyone help? Lovecraft also got into King's work in another couple of his novels with 'Christine' being the most obvious one that I can recall, any other examples? Anyway, my earlier advice in this thread still holds true for anyone who's unfamiliar with Lovecraft's work. IDRM, I've seen and heard It pimped out to high heaven as King's greatest work from many people... but then again, a lot of people fell in love with The Stand which I thought was okay, but not great. I've read it several times. Be warned, parts of it do indeed get very cosmic and extremely symbolic. It's well done, but if anything throws people off, that's usually it. There is also, I believe in the same collection, Crouch End, which is the other King Lovecraft tale. It IS definitely about Lovecraft material, but not as clearly.
