Sable: 'Second chance to live dream'

by Phil Speer

April 4, 2003

Many WWE fans assumed they'd never again see Sable, who was last part of WWE in 1999. But she made a shocking return on Thursday's episode of SmackDown!, proving once and for all the two oft-heard cliches: "anything can happen in WWE" and "never say never in this business." A few hours before the SmackDown! taping in Spokane, Wash., WWE.com had the opportunity to sit down with the former Women's Champion and Playboy cover girl.

WWE.com: How does it feel being here?

Sable: It feels wonderful. Everyone has been so kind since I returned, and it's just an opportunity for me to have a second chance at doing something that I really love.

WWE.com: What about being backstage for the first time in four years?

Sable: Well, I have to say I was very nervous to come back and walk through the doors for the first time. But everyone has been nothing but kind and has made me feel very welcome. I'm very excited to be back.

WWE.com: So you were a little nervous coming here?

Sable: Yeah. I think anyone in my position, after a four-year hiatus, would be a little nervous. But, like I said, so far everything has gone very well.

WWE.com: Are you anticipating any tension or negative feelings backstage?

Sable: I hate to anticipate anything. I came here to do my job. I came here to prove myself once again. I know it's going to take time for me to fit in and maybe be trusted, or whatever the case may be. I'm very dedicated and committed to making this work. The only thing I can do is be myself, and hopefully that'll be good.

WWE.com: Do you know at this point how long you're here for?

Sable: Well, I have signed a long-term contract, so I'm hoping to be around for a while.

WWE.com: Do you anticipate that you'll be wrestling at all?

Sable: I have no expectations at this point. I'm not exactly sure what my position in the company will be. I'm just going to take one day at a time, and enjoy every minute of it. Not many people get a second chance, and I do, so I'm just going to enjoy it.

WWE.com: How did this second chance come about?

Sable: I had a meeting with Vince (McMahon) and Jim Ross, and at that time we decided to put the past behind us and move forward. We don't want to discuss anything that happened in the past, or anything negative. Everything's very positive at this point, and I'd like to keep it that way.

WWE.com: What's your relationship like with Vince and J.R.?

Sable: Well, at this point, we've had one meeting in the past four years. (Laughs) I very much look forward to returning to the company and just starting that relationship back up. I know it's going to take time for us all to learn to trust one another again. But I just want them to know that I am totally committed to making this work.

WWE.com: Did you ever expect when you left that you might wind up back here one day?

Sable: You know, stranger things have happened. In this business, you learn to never say never. I never did say never. I always hoped that there could be a possibly for a return. And I just pursued other things while I was gone. I'm just going to come back very grateful and make the most of this opportunity.

WWE.com: Some people are going to be very surprised that you're back because of what happened in the past.

Sable: Well, if they think they're surprised, they have no idea how I feel! (Laughs)

WWE.com: Do you expect that this second run will be more pleasant than the first?

Sable: I think that anytime you take any kind of extended period of time away from anything, whatever it may be -- a relationship, a career -- I think you have a newfound appreciation for it. I think sometimes when you're in the moment, you don't appreciate it. When you have to step back and really see the opportunity that you had, you learn to appreciate it more. This time, I'll certainly live each day to the fullest and make the most of this opportunity.

WWE.com: There were rumors that you were difficult to work with the last time you were here. Is that true?

Sable: If you asked me, I'd have to say no. I had many friends within the business, and continue to have many friends. But I think that anytime there is competition, and one person maybe excels quicker or to a different level than other people, there will always be a sense of jealously or competitiveness. The way I learned to deal with that was just basically to stay to myself. I didn't want to fuel any rumors and I didn't want to say anything negative. So I found the easiest thing to do was to be a loner. People can perceive that anyway they choose, but I just learned by keeping my mouth shut and doing what I was supposed to do, it was just easier to get along. I love having friends and I love being part of a family atmosphere, but you can only do that if both sides are willing.

WWE.com: Is that going to be your philosophy this time around? Or are things going to be different?

Sable: My philosophy, as I said, is just to come back with a really positive attitude. There are a lot of new people here. Maybe a lot of the people who perceived me a certain way in the past are no longer here. And for whatever reason, I just feel it will be different this time. I feel very welcome.

WWE.com: There were also rumors that you got a "big head" once you appeared in Playboy. True?

Sable: Absolutely not. I've always been shy in a lot of ways, and I come from very humble beginnings. I don't believe that was the case. Anytime there's any kind of jealousy, people are going to say whatever they want to say. And maybe me withdrawing from things that were said about me was not the best way to handle it. But it was the way I found to handle it then.

WWE.com: What happened that night in WCW, just after you left WWE? You were sitting in the front row. People assumed that meant you were going to end up there.

Sable: Well, at that time, I had a lot of friends who were working at WCW, and I was in town. I was doing "Larry King Live," I believe. And they invited me to the show, so I showed up.

WWE.com: And that's it?

Sable: That's it.

WWE.com: How are you feeling about tonight -- the first time in front of fans in four years?

Sable: Actually, I'm feeling very excited. I've been working within the entertainment business since I left. But to work in front of a live audience is just an unbelievable experience, so I really look forward to hearing my music, walking through the curtain again, and just seeing the live crowd.

WWE.com: Will you talk a little bit more about what you've done in the entertainment business since WWE fans last saw you?

Sable: Sure. I shot four movies since I've been away. I was in "Corky Romano," with Chris Kattan, and I starred in three movies that I did on my own in North American Productions. They have not been released yet. But it was just a great experience. I learned a lot about the business, about the production, what goes on behind the scenes, more about acting. I've was able to do some music videos. I did a music video called "Breath" with Cledus T. Judd. It was a parody on "Breathe," and it was nominated for video of the year. That was a lot of fun. It was the first time I got to show my comedic side. I don't think a lot of people realize that I can be very funny. It was a lot of fun.

WWE.com: Will you still pursue acting now that you're back?

Sable: Right now my focus is on the wrestling industry. I need to come back and prove myself. I need to come back and let everyone know that I'm committed and dedicated to making this work. And I know it's going to take time for people to trust me again. If an opportunity does come up, and the industry is agreeable with it, then, sure, I would like to pursue that.

WWE.com: What's your husband (Marc Mero) up to these days? How's he doing?

Sable: My husband is doing wonderful. He's working real-estate investments. He used his body for so long -- for 10 years he was in the business and had a wonderful career. And now he's choosing to use his mind. He really enjoys the career that he's chosen at this point.

WWE.com: How closely have you kept up with WWE's product?

Sable: Well, since I've signed my contract (about a month ago), very closely. Traveling and being on the road -- I lived in California for a while, while I was working -- I didn't really have a lot of time to keep up with the product. But from what I have seen, the product is tremendous. The production value is so much better, not to say it wasn't good at that time, but I think it's just made tremendous leaps and bounds.

WWE.com: Are there any particular Superstars who have impressed you?

Sable: I'll tell you what I'm impressed with: I'm impressed with all the young, new talent they've brought in. I'm impressed with the dedication and commitment that I see from these performers. Every time you see them, they get better and better. I'm really, really excited about the new women's division. I believe that they add so much to the show. And I believe that Sable can be a big part of that. I believe that she left when she was just reaching her stride, and she had so much more to offer. So I'm really glad to be back and be a part of that.

WWE.com: It must've been hard to walk away because you were so popular at the time.

Sable: You know, it was really hard to walk away from that. But I think that when certain things happen, or certain things are said, you reach a point where you need to be true to yourself. I felt that it would be better to step back at that time.

WWE.com: Have you kept in touch with anybody?

Sable: Yeah, I have. There are a lot of people who are new here. But I still have a lot of friends in the industry that I've kept in touch with. I don't necessarily want to name names.

My husband was in the industry for 10 years, and I was in it basically the whole time with him -- not so much a part of it, but knowing the people. We've made a lot of friends, and kept in touch with a lot of them.

WWE.com: Is there anything you want to add?

Sable: Just how excited I am to be back. I think there are not many times in your life that you get a second chance to live your dream. I come back with such a new appreciation for what I had and lost. And I'm just totally dedicated and committed to making it work this time.

Discuss.

LOL

most people know this but whether you do or dont take a moment and reflect on this

Sable was such a ratings draw at one point that Smackdown was going to be HER GODDAMN SHOW!!

i mean it would be the womens division but focused on her

when the hell has WWF drawn a dime with women wrestling (and thats nothing against all the women but WWF didnt know how to push it for beans)?

can you imagine being some poor bastard recapper for a site and having to recap "Skankdown" every week?

Dr. Tom would quit the site.

Say what you will about her, but I wouldn't mind seeing her in some T & A matches with Torrie.

Sable is damaged goods. The divas they have now are better in every aspect, I know that isn't saying much. And oh, what happened to Dawn Marie, she kind of dissapeared. Maybe Vince is having her hair bleached and her chest pumped up.

Yes because we all need more T & A on a wrestling show. Especially a battle of the playmates, and one of them is 40 years old.

Face it, T & A is a part of wrestling. It's as much a part of wrestling as entrance music and pyro.

That stuff is necessary for today's wrestling show.

It's only nessesary because WWE makes it nessesary. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the girls showing their, erm, assets. But I don't want to see matches wasted on it.

No, its neccesary. This is like an action movie. You need the big good looking guys, the evil villian, and the hot girl.

I said already I don't mind them being eye candy, but T & A matches aren't nessesary. Sunny was never in T & A matches; neither was Sable on her first run.

Sable: My husband is doing wonderful. He's working real-estate investments.

So, let me get this straight. They hire the skank to suck face with the other skank, and leave the talent in the marriage at home selling land?

Well, Sable was in the first evening gown match...

As for Sable...I dunno. She can't act for shit, can't wrestle for shit, and last night she wasn't looking all that great either. Sure, she was over in her day, but today's "divas" are so much better that they really don't need her. If they benefit from her signing, good, but I think it's a waste of money.

Marc Mero isn't even coming back? Whats going on? I'm so confused. I think he is the only guy to legitimately stay retired after his 'Loser Must Retire' match. Thats a better legacy than 95% of all wrestlers.

After seeing them both in Playboy, T&A matches will do nothing for me. I mean whats the point we've already seen all there is to see.

Well there is one more thing they could do, but I will leave it up to your imagination.

This is one case where I wouldn't care about continuity. I'd rather watch Mero on my TV than the trashy roadpile that is Sable.

Stupid bitch needs to learn to be humble..........seriously. If she would take a look outside her perspective and into damn near everyone else from the company at the time of her leaving, I think she would realize her ego is fucking enormous. I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt that she's changed, but after reading this, she's just the same old hypocritical biatch she was back 4 years ago.

Anyone remember when she even talked about Owen's death and all that shit too? Arg, fuckin dumb bitch. If you aren't up to speed on that and her lawsuit, I did a column about her relating to that , yup it was about 4 years ago, it should still be up at http://redjed.cjb.net. Wow I never thought I would shill my site that I havent worked on for years around anywhere, much less here.

Mero lost the retirement match to Gillberg right?

Didn't sable herself beat him?

Or was that the match where she was going to have undertaker wrestle for her, but she did it herself and he tricked her with an inside cradle?

Actually, Mero's knees are badly damaged (from what I remember). He probably can't wrestle because of them...

Yes (Marc)Mero's knackered...I credit him for knowing that it's time to hang up the boots and do something else.

As for the T&A comments...it's NOT essential. It just detracts from the female wrestlers, not just in WWE but in Japan who work their asses off. Sure, WWE needs the 'pretty girls'. They've got them. Molly, Victoria and Trish...the ones who can WRESTLE. If a hot chick can't wrestle, they're better off doing what Sunny did. How many times did Sunny wrestle? None that I can remember. She managed, she presented...it worked. It helped she had a personality I guess. Stacy is better as a heel manager, Torrie as a face manager, Dawn as heel manager, Nidia too. I'd rather see Jazz wrestle than see Torrie do her T&A thing...

Just compare the Women's Title Match at Mania to Stacy, Torrie and the 'Catfight Girls' attempts at acting. See what I mean.

BiScHoFf Is GoD!!! is female.

Only on the weekends...

Anyway, I didn't say I wouldn't watch the T&A stuff, I'm saying I prefer the women actually WRESTLING. After all, One of the W's does stand for wrestling remember.

Yeah, and the "E" stands for entertainment.

I'm not a big fan of all the T & A, especially when there's no logical storyline reasoning for it (i.e. HLA or the holiday Gravy Bowl/Egg Nogg matches), but they are trying to entertain people and 18-24 year old males -- the target audience -- are entertained by tits and ass. And the thing is, the women who do wrestle aren't all that anyway. Victoria, Jazz and Molly are pretty good, but that's it. Everyone else makes the women's division look like a cheap imitation of actual wrestling.

I wonder if some people realized how damn loud that pop for Sable was on Thursday. I personally marked for Sable but I only remember her from back during Attitude I don't know if she'd fit in today. The women in her day besides Jackie were all managers and just eye candy. Nowadays women do alot more.
