Heh, I used to get headaches wondering what the hell protoculture was when I was little. I even bought a Robotech comic book hoping that someone would explain it.

You might be right as SDF Southern Cross could be part of the Macross Universe but was hack to death to Americanize it to fit the Protoculture storyline.

Good news, Genesis Climber Mospeada which is the 3rd sage of Robotech is being released in its orginal form by ADV complete uncut and in Japanese!!

Macross gets big props from me. Macross Plus is what got me into Anime, and Akira is what got be hooked. But my all time favourite Anime is the Megazone Saga. Hot damn the twist at the end is better than anything you'll ever see.

Inuyasha- Like YuYu Hakusho, goofy premise, but it gets awesome later on. If I had to compare it to any other anime I've ever seen, I'd say it's a lot like Slayers(just the interactions between the main characters, that is). Only problem I have with the show is Shippo. God, I hate that lil fox demon. Oh, and Miroku is friggin' AWESOME when he's around the ladies.

Lupin the Third- The drawing may be dated, but this is an awesome show. Still can't fathom why Cartoon Network would drop it instead of the piece of garbage that is Reign: The Conquerer.

Shippo's not that bad, in my opinion, and serves well as the group's lackey in need of a beatdown. Miroku does indeed rock the house with the lecherous tendencies. By the way, where the heck did the little flea that looks like Happosai suddenly run off to?

Lupin the Third, like I said, is great old school material despite aged animation and references needing to be updated. Really hope the licensing conflicts get resolved so we can get some of the movies imported.

I also watched a full episode of Reign: The Conqueror. There's just something about Peter Chung's character design that doesn't feel right. Not quite enough to make my List of Blackballed Anime Titles though where Tenchi in...WHAT THE HELL IS THIS CRAP?!? resides.

Mioga seems to come and go as he pleases. Last episode I remember seeing him in before Inuyasha learned about the Windscar would be where he sucked all the poison out of Inuyasha's body when he turned human.

Eh?

I didn't think Pioneer & FUNimation were fighting over the movie rights. Pioneer snapped up the television series while FUNi bought rights to the TV specials and most of the movies. And Manga's got Cagliostro.

Were the owners withholding copyrights to the films for some reason?

And about Inu-Yasha...

Sango owns. Sesshy owns. Both Sango & Sesshy own.

Now that I've embarassed myself, please continue.

Nevermind what I said. I was thinking about the old fiasco regarding the copyrighting of the name "Arsene Lupin" that brought us the names "Rupan" and "The Wolf."

While I'm at it, somebody settle this once and for all with me: Is the correct pronunciation of Lupin actually "Lu-PAHN" and not "Lu-PIN"?

Loo-PAHN, unless you wanna be a real stickler about it and pronounce it Roo-PAHN.

I was about to say Bubblegum Crisis is what got me into anime, but I have to go way the hell back to Speed Racer, when I was singing the theme song when i was four years old.... of course going through grade school and high school I was hooked on Voltron (though I thought vehicle team had a better storyline that the lions, everyone went ga-ga over the lions), and Robotech of course (which wasn't *too* bad when compared to the original Macross, but that's up the personal taste, I guess).

What hooked me for good was Bubblegum Crisis back in 1990. Then when I moved to Florida in '93, by then roommate (the biggest otaku I ever met to this day) got me hooked on Ranma and Saint Seiya... then we found a contact that got us original Dragon Ball Z episodes from japanese tv, and it was all over. I still remain a major DBZ fan, though more of the original japanese version than the americanized version.

Ever since Cartoon Network has started faithfully airing anime series, such as Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, DBZ, etc., they have earned my respect. Not to mention I FINALLY get to view Yu Yu Hakusho from the beginning...

Voltron and Astroboy were my Anime connections as a kid - so they got me 'hooked'. When I say 'hooked' I don't mean hooked like you guys, I mean that in the "Not Against Watching It" like a lot of people are. I really like Anime but won't go far out of my way to watch it. Akira was such a visceral experience, I didn't love it so much as I felt it and after it was over I was like "holy fuck, what the hell was that?!". Princess Mononoke is one of my favourite movies - period. Last Year I had to do a presentation on the Rime of the Ancient Mariner (sp) and had to relate it to films/literature/etc. I picked the Green Mile but threw in Princess Mononoke just to pimp it off to the class... I was shocked to see that no one had heard of it before. (I showed the Lady Eboshi/PM fight where Ashitaka gets shot and totally NO SELLS IT LIKE A FUCKIN MOTHERFUCKIN MOTHERFUCKER and then lifts open the door.) Even when asking people who 'should know' because they are all artsy and shit; all i get is a blank stare and "what is that?" and then a dirty look after I tell them it's anime.

A few weeks ago I found some Astroboy tapes in a Music Store - it was a strange fortune because I was dying to DL some Astroboy a few days before because I hadn't seen it in over a decade but couldn't get it on line because, well, my modem is slow-as-fuck. I got the last two tapes in the 9 tape set (5 eps on each..sweet!) as I figured why get all of them if they turn out being shit? Well, they weren't shit.

The year earlier my love for Astroboy was rediscovered when I found myself on yesterdayland.com and seached for it of the site... The feeling of all the memories rushing back was insane.

When I looked at the back of both cases the only show I recognized was "The Worlds Greatest Robot Pt 1 and 2" which has for the longest time been one of my favourite TV episodes ever and the reason I purchased the last two tapes rather than the first two. Not only did that eps. hold up like a motherfucker, but those other 9-or-so eps on the tapes?? I remembered seeing them all as a kid... I was FREAKED *THE FUCK* OUT~!

And I was equally freaked out by the casual violence and mature themes in every episode - so much so that I questioned my Parents partental abilities since they let me watch it! Some really great storytelling, but man-oh-man, does every character have to die in it?! No wonder I am desensitized to violence...

Oh, and Stanley Kubrick and Stephen Speilberg, you could have at least done the show justice when you blatently copied it! Jeez, the kid didn't even shoot bullets out of his ass...

I saw some cray show called 'Tokyo Revelation' yesterday on Sci-Fi. Has anyone heard of it?

It started of promisingly enough, but it gradually got worse as the plot got more and more ridiculous.

That reminds me of Betterman, which I had started watching on TechTV's Anime Unleashed. It started out okay, but man, once they hit episode 20, shit was making no sense. And the ending of the show is pretty friggin' retarded in it's own right.

I wouldn't call it the worst show I've ever seen, but it's up there, though.

Another show to avoid at all costs is Reign: The Conquerer. I have NO CLUE why Cartoon Network would drop Lupin the Third, yet keep this turd running. They even had it replace Inu-fucking-yasha for some goddamn reason.

Sigh...

It's hard to determine if Reign fits the catagory of anime or not. Its mostly Korean animation and joint American-Japanese writting.

Either way, it doesnt matter cause its crap.

I second the love for Astroboy. To this day the tournament between all the robots to find the strongest one remains one my favorite pieces of TV ever.

A note here for Astroboy fans. I think Manga has put out new episodes of Astroboy that weren't ever seen in North America. Also, lots of footage was also clipped from the original series.

I read how they are celebrating the anniversary of Astroboy in Japan, and they are redoing the series, I think.... if I can find the article, I'll post it.

EDIT

I found it...

As a kid in the 1960s, nothing could get me into the living room faster than to hear the cheerful strains of the Astroboy theme song coming from our old black-and-white TV set. Astroboy was in many ways the original Japanese anime, with over 100 original black-and-white episodes and over 50 color episodes from the 1980s sequel series. The brainchild of the late Dr. Osamu Tezuka, Astroboy was (according to the storyline) "born" in Tokyo, Japan on April 7, 2003. Today, of course, Japan is celebrating this milestone on many levels and in many ways, and not just at the official website. Today, Fuji Television Network broadcast the first segment of a new 50-part Astro Boy series that is to travel to the United States later this year. With this export in the offing, Astro Boy will contribute to what one essayist recently called Japan's "gross national cool." Unless you've seen (or grown up with) the original Astroboy, you can't fully appreciate the true genius of what Tezuka created, infused with a childlike wonder of the world seen thru Astroboy's eyes and sweetly endowed with his philosophy: "Love all creatures! Love everything that has life! Preserve nature! Bless life! Be careful of a civilization that puts too much stock in science! Do not wage war!"

Just because Reign has an adult theme does not make it Anime.

It still looks like 3rd rate MTV rejected late night animated crap for insommiacs and fanboys of Aeon Flux or Liquid TV.

If Reign is considered Anime than The Maxx and Spawn should be considered tv classics.

I'm not following your logic here. Doesn't matter of anime of those titles fall under the anime banner. Classics are classics. Crap is crap.

Anyway, I swipped this from animeondvd.com

"Rintaro goes into how the show was a collaborative effort between the Japanese, Koreans, and Americans. The show is animated in Korea, the story and music came from Japan, while the designs are Peter Chung’s. "

Take it for what you will. I wouldn't slap it with an anime banner though, seeing as theres just too much from other countries.
