For example, who Keel Lorenz really is, why only 14-year-old children born after the 2nd Impact can pilot the EVAs, The Lance of Longinus, and the Magi computers.

While all these individual elements are all there, they add up to nothing.

Seriously, this is one of the most overrated and overhyped animes of all time. I'm suprised there's as many fanboys here for it. ;) There are a billion fanboys who have been counting and trying to piece this stuff together since 98. It doesn't add up to jack squat.

You're exactly right, which goes along with my theory of them digging themselves in too deep of a hole. I don't have an exact quote for you, but someone who was working closely with the show said that they threw in a bunch of christian symbols "Just because it looked cool" which doesnt surprise me one bit.

People like the show for what I think are the wrong reasons. The show really isn't about the symbolish crap, hell i'm surprised they didn't show Jesus and the Star of David or something. The show would have made just as much sense.

Series:

Cowboy Bebop:

My favorite show, ever. Mixes great animation, characters, action, humor and pathos. Only compolaint is it being to short.

Vision of Escaflowne:

High drama and giant medievel robots. A beautiful series with great animation and music (by Yoko Kano). A bit of a rushed ending, But overall great. Has one of the best villains ever: Dilandau. Don't see it dubbed, the dub sucks.

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor:

Trigun seemed falimilar to me since the 'idiot savant, happy go lucky genius-fool' was seen in Tylor before. Basically: a happy-go-lucky, slobiish oaf captains a rundown starship in time of war. Though he seems completely selfish, irresponsible, cowardly and lazy, he somehow always survives, and actually starts building up a number of wins, seemingly by chance. Is he the luckiest man in the world, or is there more to him? The animation isn't so hot, but theis series is full of humor, drama , and heart, with on of the best series of ending episodes I've ever seen.

Gundam Zeta:

NOt available here yet, you'll be sure I'll buy it when it is. The direct sequel to the original Gundam series (which I liked, but didn't love). This series features a monster cast of new and returning characters, a darkerand less-predictable plot. (Many times, characters are killed seemingly at random, much like an actual war.) This series, IMO betters the original in nigh every way.

Also: Trigun, Lain, Saber Marionette J (NOT J again), Ranma (for goofy comedy)Key the Metal Idol. Macross+

Movies

Spirited Away, Lupin III:Castle of Cagliostro, Mononoke, Totoro, Castle in the sky, Kiki's delivery service, And, I assume Nausicaa (since I've read the manga) Basically anything Miyazaki does is gauranteed to pretty near gold. He is probably the greatest animator to have ever lived, in that his stories can always really touch you, and often make you feel happily like a child again. At 18 I watched Totoro with my little sis and thouroughly enjoyed it.

Lupin fans: If you have not, you must see Castl;e of Cagliostro.

Ghost in the SHell, Patlabor I,II

Good Goddamn Cyberpunk done by the master of methodical anime, mamoru Oshi, all these movies will entertain you and make you think. All have wonderful animation and great sountracks done by Kenji Kawai.

Akira: Hard-edged sci-ci, the plot may be somewaht vague (having been condenced from something like 2000 pages of manga) But the visuals are incredible, and the movie is scary like few other. An incredible epic.

Grave of the Fireflies: I've said it before, I'll say it again. This movie made me cry like a little bitch. Hence have only seen once. But a movei I'll never forget. Heartwrenching and incredibly powerful

Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on heaven's door

It's the Bebop movie! Still great humor, style, and action. Though the plot's a bit uninspired, It's good to see Spike on the big screen. Here's hopin for at least one more movie!

Others: Wings of Honneamis

Ninja Scroll

Another guilty pleasure. If you haven't seen it, think of it as Kenshin dumbed down to DBZ level. Good action and a fun movie. Just don't expect much story or intellicual stimulation

is it true that the USA release of the movie was cut as the fight scene between the main characters was edited?

I wouldn't call the series overhyped (at least not any more than any other obsession geeks seem to have i.e. Star Wars). I can't say that I know exactly why all of those elements are added to the story but I also can't say that I mind their inclusion.

What exactly are you looking for it to add up to? It's not the religious elements that are supposed to added up, nor are they the focus despite "billions of fanboys" trying to make it that way. The story is about people and their weaknesses. Anyone who is trying to make sense of the story by trying to figure out why the religious aspect was included is gonna come to a dead-end every time and get "jack squat", as you so eloquently put it. ;)

As far as the religious elements go, it's just names and prophesied occurences in a fictional setting, it's not supposed to be anything major or life-altering. The Dead Sea Scrolls in Evangelion foretold a major event and Keel Lorenz (who is thought to be the world's oldest living man and the Jew soldier who spit on Christ at the crucifixion, and thus his punishment was to walk to the Earth until the apocalypse) is deliberately trying to make that event (3rd Impact) come a little sooner to ease the pain of living, but more for himself than mankind. In order to do it he must have a few holy or heavenly items, including the Lance of Longinus (or Spear of Destiny, supposedly one of the spears stuck in Jesus' side at the crucifixion). I can't speak for the meaning of the actual imagery because honestly there isn't much there beyond when the angels are destroyed they make a crucifix and the crucifix that Misato wears that belonged to her father. I don't feel it goes overboard with the imagery in that respect.

What you want it to add up to, I don't know; what meaning you're looking for I don't know. I don't think any of these religious elements were added to give Evangelion some deeper meaning beyond any other regular anime. I don't look at the anime as some religion or quasi-religious experience like fanboys look at Star Wars and The Matrix, but I do appreciate the elements included regardless of what they mean or why they're included simply because it adds a sense of realism and it at least goes beyond your normal, run-of-the-mill and average anime storyline. Admit it, to put in Evangelion what Anno did, you had to know your stuff and do your homework, regardless of whether or not you took liberties with the material.

I didn't realize that including modern mythology in a work was a knock against it somehow or that if it is included it has to have some overall deeper meaning that adds to the story. (and in actuality, it does add to the story here, because without all that mythology and the Dead Sea Scrolls prophesy there would be no story at all since every major chain of events that occurs would have no reason to take place.)

I see Evangelion as being no different from something like Kevin Smith's Dogma. That had ALOT of religion and scripture included in the screenplay but what did it add up to really? It was just a way to tell a story and to get from point A to point B, taking various cinematic and literary liberties along the way. Religion is used in the same way in Evangelion, but of course, like everything, anything that dares use religion as a catalyst is gonna be analyzed and scrutinized til the cows come home; people have their own interpretations and point to innacuracies. But to be looking for some deep meaning is just stupid....it's a fucking cartoon. And the religious elements aren't why I like it. I think its good storytelling (despite alot of it being left open for debate) but hey, The Bible is full of great stories, too and how long has that been debated and interpreted a million different ways.

You get from Evangelion what you WANT to get out of it and that honestly was Anno's intention (whether he started out with that intention or not).

There's nothing cut from the American DVD release. The only edits are the removal of kanji for English in the opening and closing titles.

The original UK version was cut a bit, mostly for the scene between Tessai (the devil who could transform to rock) & Kagero. I'm not sure if these scenes were ever restored.

I was told by a military friend who has seen the Japanese version at a theater that the fight scene between Jubei and main villian in the ship was cut short.

I don't have the money to import anime or buy it from my local comic book store or Software Etc., but I'd be damned if Hamtaro wasn't the shit.

I love how the Japnese can make a cartoon about 'porn', but still take time to throw in a great storyline. Yes, downloading hentai on Kazaa rules.

I think when talking about Evangelion, I'm mostly intrigued by some of THESE things...

Like the name of the title Neon Genesis Evangelion. Neon Genesis, as in "New Beginning" and Evangelion, with the Evang part meaning one who spreads the word of God. The spear and the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the MFin APOCOLYPSE are also important. Like it was said before, it's not necessarily part of the story, but how these things are used just make me think big time...maybe too much.

Question.

Since Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door has been released to US theatres (super limited... like 20 screens), I'm just wondering, are there any plans for a DVD release with English dub as an option? The only version I've seen is Japanese dub ONLY, and I'd kinda like to have both available.

Anyone know?

Actually I can understand that. Although I doubt angels will be attacking us anytime soon, it makes for an interesting "what if".

I'm guessing that since they decided to do that with Akira, that they would do the same thing with Cowboy Bebop.

Akira was distributed by Pioneer, Columbia Tri-Star picked up the Bebop movie.

Hee hee *snort*

Anyway, the Bebop dub will DEFINATELY be on, along with the same voice actors, so fear not.

Funny thing about Spikes voice actor, David Lucas. He sounds exactly like Steve Blum, who will do the voice of Spike for the Bebop movie. Although they keep insisting they're not, it is generally believed that they are the same person. The theory is Blum is a member of the screen actors guild and uses the handle David Lucas when doing non-union work, such as most anime dubs.

But that's just a theory, not a fact. Either way, I won't mind Blum being Spike, and you shouldn't either.

Since I gots the time, might as well try to contribute to this thread... lol

Favorite Series:

Slayers- Pretty good comedy with some nice action underneath. Even managed to make the 3rd season(which had no manga to base it on) pretty good.

Tenchi Muyo!- No, this does NOT include "That Other Tenchi Series". Like it was stated before, this is pretty much the template of the "Multiple women love one guy" anime.

YuYu Hakusho- One of my big time favorites. The series starts with some of the usual cliched anime stuff, but once Four Saint Beasts is over with, it gets *really* good. I highly recommend the Dark Tourmament storyline as Yusuke and Kuwabara start to really grow as characters.

Inuyasha- Like YuYu Hakusho, goofy premise, but it gets awesome later on. If I had to compare it to any other anime I've ever seen, I'd say it's a lot like Slayers(just the interactions between the main characters, that is). Only problem I have with the show is Shippo. God, I hate that lil fox demon. Oh, and Miroku is friggin' AWESOME when he's around the ladies.

Lupin the Third- The drawing may be dated, but this is an awesome show. Still can't fathom why Cartoon Network would drop it instead of the piece of garbage that is Reign: The Conquerer.

Ruroni Kenshin- I haven't seen all of it, but I love what I've seen so far. I really dislike all the Yahiko-centered episodes, though. Those suck ass.

Trigun- Can't say more than what's been said already.

Cowboy Bebop- Ditto.

Serial Experimentrs Lain- If you like mindfucks, THIS IS THE SHOW FOR YOU! I mean, seriously, try making it through the 5 episode without a headache from thinking about all the crazy shit that goes on. It's just impossible.

Digimon- I may catch shit for this, but fuck it. I love every season of this show. Call it a Pokemon rip-off all you want, but the fact is that they did more than most non-kiddie anime did with the 3rd season(Tamers).

Yu-Gi-Oh!- Another I may catch some shit for, but whatever. Yugi is a lil too much like Ash for my liking(always winning), but fuck it, Joey Wheeler makes up for it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion- It's been talked about so I don't feel like getting into it.

Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories- The whole Gundam franchise gets so much praise for series like this. Great episodic drama with a minimum of the politics. If you should watch any three parts of the Gundam Universe, it should be this, Mobile Suit Gundam, and...

Gundam: 08th MS Team- The ending for this one had tears coming out of my eyes when I first saw it. Much like 0083, great, GREAT stroytelling and the battles are pretty cool as well.

Robotech- The first season is what got me hooked into anime. I cried like a lil bitch when one of the main characters died and near the end as well. Rik's handling of the love triangle is funny as hell, too.

Favorite Movies:

Perfect Blue- Creepy as hell.

A Ghost in the Shell

AKIRA- First anime movie I ever saw and also the one that got me into anime along with Robotech.

Tenchi Forever(Tenchi Muyo in Love 2)- I didn't think too much of it at first, but when I started paying attention during my second viewing, the movie opened up like a book. A definite must-see for all Tenchi fans.

I think that was it unless the Masters(?) saga(the last 2 box sets) was connected to the Macross Universe.

I think the only season of Robotech that has any connection to Macross is the 1st one, everthing else revovled around the mysterious Protoculture storyline that connected the 3 sagas of Robotech.
