Here's what I know about Prince:

-I really like the song "Dirty Mind" quite a bit, but I haven't heard the whole album as of yet.

-"Purple Rain"--the movie--is really stupid, but sort of fun to watch in an "I'm a member of Generation Y, but I'm not entirely sure what that means and I basically just find myself doing all the same stuff that the the listless Generation X was know for, such as partaking in entertainment that I know to be bad but can enjoy on some sort of subversive, abstract level which I guess makes me better and smarter than the entertainment itself and maybe that Richard Hell was onto something" sort of way.

-I really like "When Doves Cry" but have not yet listened to the album from whence it came in its entirety.

-"Under The Cherry Moon"--or at least that's what I think Prince's second film was called--is so stupid and insulting as to be impossible to enjoy on any level.

-"Little Red Corvette" sucks.

-"1999" is okay.

So what else?

The "recca sto" scene from Under the Cherry Moon is the begining of Ebonics in film as we know it!

Must check out Prince's material from the 90s when he change his name, mainly the Diamonds & Perals album and tracks of:

My Name is Prince

Cream

Get Off

Sexy Mother Fucker

Pussy Control

Theives in the Temple

Most Beautiful Woman in the World

There was a sequal to Purple Rain but I forgot the name of the movie.

That would be 1990's Graffitti Bridge

According to Kevin Smith, Prince like to shoot documentaries and videos that'll never see the light of day.

Die.

As for essential Prince, Dirty Mind and Sign O' the Times should automatically be issued to anyone the slightest bit curious about the man. The former is a glorious blend of 80s funk and new wave, while the latter takes a little from everything, mixing it up into one funky, soulful, rockin' stew.

Also, I am disturbed greatly by your hatred for "Little Red Corvette." Never has a finer song about pussy been written.

Prince is a musical genius in every sense of the word. From the fact that he plays over 40 instruments, to the fact that all of his songs are perfect compositions.

By the way, my favorite song is "Darling Nikki" possibly the second best song about masterbation ever recorded.

I've never heard any Prince album in its entirety either, and although a friend of mine back home is a Prince fan, I'm much too daunted by the sheer amount of material available and the wild variances in quality over his career to try and pick and choose.

That being said, I love "Pussy Control" and his cover of "One of Us", and although I find myself singing the chorus every now and again, I could never really get into "When Doves Cry". Never seen Purple Rain.

i find prince very hit-or-miss. he's easily one of the most talented artists ever, & easily one of the most ambitious ones ever. but i think he's had a tendency as the years went on to spread himself too thin & focus on quantity rather than quality. example: 'sign o' the times' is obviously supposed to be an all-encompassing, sprawling album, but a lot of the songs feel like prince just recorded them to help give the album that "epic" feel, and he didn't bother trying to make each track as good as he should have.

Get the black album. Downloading it is the best and easiest way.

Ah, Prince. I echo the sentiments above and say that you absolutely need Dirty Mind, Sign O' The Times, and Purple Rain. PR is probably the best Prince primer, since the four singles off of that are astounding, and it's the Revolution (his best band) playing at their finest. If you really dig the song "Dirty Mind," then get that album ASAP, because everything on there is a similar style and most of it blows the title track out of the water. "When You Were Mine" might be my favorite song ever, and the double-punch of "Head" and "Sister" (which are about exactly what they sound like) is unstoppably awesome.

His strongest period is from 80-87, and anything from there is pretty great. After that--and even during a bit--he gets hit or miss, but I'll disagree with godthedog and say that Sign O' The Times is almost flawless. Some tracks are stronger than others, but even at just 80 minutes it feels like a real great double-album, and I can really only think of one change I'd make.

Oh, and you also owe it to yourself to check out some of his sillier early stuff, most notably "Jack U Off."
