Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted April 15, 2003 Inspired by Kinetic and always looking to give dap to my favorite bands, I thought I would draw up a little tourney of my own. I've discounted all the usual suspects and have listed 32 of my favorite bands whom I never feel get the credit they deserve. If you don't like a band or want to know why a band isn't on here, please keep in mind that it's just a personal list. Feel free to comment as you wish and clearly mark your picks for each match up. If you don't know a band or song, I whole heartily recommend you download something and give it a listen. I've listed three songs by each band as a bit of a tip off. Bracket One Allman Brothers (Whipping Post, Melissa, Ramblin’ Man) The Marshall Tucker Band (Can’t You See, Fire on the Mountain, Heard it In a Love Song) Badfinger (Come and Get it, Baby Blue, Day After Day) Guess Who (These Eyes, American Woman, No Sugar Tonight) The Band (The Weight, The Shape I’m In, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down) Buffalo Springfield (For What It’s Worth, Hot Dusty Roads, Go and Say Goodbye) Bad Company (Bad Company, Runnin’ With the Pack, Silver, Blue and Gold) Steppenwolf (Born to be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride, The Pusher) Bracket 2 Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (Ohio, Southern Cross, Suite Judy Blue Eyes) Kenny Rogers and the First Edition (Reuben James, Tulsa Turnaround, Just Dropped in to See What Condition my Condition is In) Kansas (Carry on My Wayward Son, Dust in the Wind, Point of No Return) Boston (More Than a Feeling, Long Time, Rock & Roll Band) Blood Sweat and Tears (Spinning Wheel, And When I Die, Lisa, Listen to Me) Grass Roots (Temptation Eyes, Sooner or Later, Baby Hold On) Blue Oyster Cult (Don’t Fear the Reaper, Burnin’ For You, Astronomy) Deep Purple (Hush, Woman From Tokyo, Smoke on the Water) Bracket 3 Stevie Ray Vuaghan and Double Trouble (Tightrope, Cold Shot, Crossfire) Thin Lizzy (Jailbreak, The Boys are Back in Town, Whiskey in the Jar) Three Dog Night (Mama Told Me Not to Come, Never Been to Spain, Joy to the World) Huey Lewis and the News (I Want a New Drug, Hip to Be Square, If This is It) Supertramp (The Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger, Bloody Well Right) Styx (Too Much Time on My Hands, The Grand Illusion, Renegade) Steely Dan (Black Cow, Deacon Blues, Hey Nineteen) Steve Miller Band (Take the Money and Run, Jet Airliner, The Joker) Bracket 4 The Doobie Brothers (China Grove, Long Train Runnin’, Black Water) The Fabulous Thunderbirds (Tuff Enuff, Rock this Place, Wrap It Up) Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band (Night Moves, Against the Wind, Like a Rock) Foreigner (Cold as Ice, Hot Blooded, Feels Like the First Time) Backman Turner Overdrive (Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet, Takin’ Care of Business, Let it Ride) George Thorogood and the Destroyers (Bad to the Bone, Who do You Love, One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer) Dire Straits(Money for Nothing, Sultans of Swing, Walk of Life) The Monkees (Last Train to Clarksville, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Listen to the Band)
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted April 15, 2003 Amazingly better bands are on this list. These are some tough decisions. ***Allman Brothers*** The Marshall Tucker Band This is a pretty tough choice right off the bat. Not a HUGE fan of either one. Never felt the urge to actually own their albums but I don't feel the urge to puke when they come on the radio. I like them both but gotta give a slight edge to Allman just because I think they have more songs than I like. Badfinger ***Guess Who*** I feel sorry for people who only know American Woman from that horrible Kravitz cover. The Band ****Buffalo Springfield*** It's all about Neil Young baby. Bad Company ****Steppenwolf**** You can not deny the power of the Magic Carpet Ride. ***Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young*** Kenny Rogers and the First Edition Bow down to Neil Young. ***Kansas*** Boston Once again, I don't turn the channel when they come on. ***Blood Sweat and Tears *** Grass Roots Cause I've heard of them. ***Blue Oyster Cult*** Deep Purple Damn you to hell for making me choose between these. BOC is a favorite but, how can I vote against Deep Purple? They did Highway Star. The best car song ever made in my eyes. God I love that song. I can't help but drive 80 or 90 when it comes on. Deep Purple is awesome but I can't vote against the most under-rated guiter player around, Buck Dharma. The man is awesome. Plus they got a song about Godzilla. PLUS they were in The Stoned Age. ***Stevie Ray Vuaghan and Double Trouble*** Thin Lizzy I really don't like either. But I can't stand Lizzy and Stevie Ray is at least tolerable. Three Dog Night ***Huey Lewis and the News*** Tough one. Not really a fan of either, but I like them OK. It's a shame that people have dismissed Huey so easily so I'll give to him. ***Supertramp*** Styx They got tramp in their name! Steely Dan ***Steve Miller Band*** Don't know why but I've always really really liked Steve Miller and found him very under-rated. Never found Steely Dan listenable. The Doobie Brothers ***The Fabulous Thunderbirds*** Just cause I forget all about their existence and I feel bad now. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band ***Foreigner*** Because as far I know, Metallica has never covered Foreigner. Backman Turner Overdrive ***George Thorogood and the Destroyers*** George is the man. Dare I say he's...bad to the bone? I think I said it. Dire Straits ***The Monkees*** The Dire Straits are so over-rated it's pathetic. Monkees are so UNDER-rated that it's mind boggling. They were a much better band than anybody has ever given them credit for. The TV show thing and the suits really screwed them. When the Monkees started getting sick of it and started doing their own stuff and made their movie Head, there was so much genuine passion and anger in their music that they were almost like a punk band. Head is the ultimate middle finger to the establishment. I could go on and on about how under-rated and under-appreciated those guys are. I wish they would've stayed togther a while longer and really became a better band instead of splitting up and ending up on the fairgrounds circuit that they're on now. Their version of the Porpoise Song is one of my favorite songs ever. Even if I hated the band, that one song would be enough to get my vote.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted April 15, 2003 It is my mind boggling how much I'm loving Lethargic right now. My take on the Monkees is exactly like yours. I love Head, I love Porpoise Song. There is about a dozen songs I could throw on here that people would download and go, "wait, this is the Monkees? This shit rocks!" As far as I know, I am the only Fabulous Thunderbirds mark currently in existence, so don't worry about forgetting about them.

Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted April 16, 2003 I can't believe so many people are gnashing at Deep Purple and BOC squaring off to start. I hate a tourney where they're all gimmes, I tried to seed with some thought behind it. I'm glad that's proving to be such a key match up. WE NEED MORE VOTES!
