Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted April 30, 2003 Sadly, Juliya is confirmed to be out of the host spot. ah well, Uranium lives and was better than the Ball ever was. Maybe James will try to look like a badass and just succeed in looking like a flabby drunk burnout. He's been doin that gimmick since The Black Album, so it shouldn't be too hard. Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted April 30, 2003 Headbangers ball will be pointless unless it can be at least as good as MTV2's "Extreme Rock" Unless it is replacing that show. I dunno though.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted April 30, 2003 Uranium lives and was better than the Ball ever was. Uranium isn't that good. It's too short, doesn't play enough videos and plays too many videos that can easily be seen on regular MTV.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted April 30, 2003 ...but it has Juliya.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2003 And Juliya es mas fina, or however the hell you say that in Spanish.
Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted May 1, 2003 Indeed, Juliya is a sweet piece of bitch. Ahem. And while they do occasionaly play some bad videos, they also have played everything from Opeth to Nothingface to Bile and while I may not love all those bands, I love that they're getting exposure. Juliya also tends to voice her opinion and it's nice to see such a thing on TV.
Guest FeArHaVoC Report post Posted May 4, 2003 I didn't feel the need to start a whole new thread for this. Last night they recorded the Metallica MTV Icon. Anyone know where to find a spoiler or a Report from the show? I've looked around and couldn't find anything.
Guest Neil-o-Mac Report post Posted May 4, 2003 Got this from the Mike Portnoy message board, although the info originated on the Metclub board... MTV ICON Report Sum 41 started it all off with a medley of Bellz Sandman (instrumental) Puppets Metalla made their entrance during sandman. Lisa Marie Presley then introduced the first movie clip Movie Beavis and Butthead made an appearance, commenting on a live version of For Whom The Bell Tollds (live shit) Beavis- "God damn it Lars, sit down and play the drums like your supposed to!!!" The two dudes from Staind then came on and tried an accoustic version of NEM. They fucked it up pretty bad. Off key and just pretty lame. Another movie about Jaymz problems, drinking and what led to rehab. Shannon Elizebeth then introduced Avril Leveign. Fuel was slowed down from what metallica does. The drrmmer and guitarist were fairly good. Avril wasn't horrible, coulda been a lot worse but all in alll it was just weird. Snoop Dog then took the stage and rapped Sad But True one word, Bizzarre! Got a good laugh outta that one. He had a sign behind him that said "Snooptallica" very different and ammusing performance. For shizel my nizzel, is that how i say it? Rob Zombie and Jolene Blalock (star trek chick) then came on and gave a pretty nice speach Movie-look back at the beginning. Real quick over Mustain, didn't say much about him at all. A Linkin Park dude and Blink 182 dude came on to introduce Korn Korn did One SLowed down from the tallica version again. I didn't care for the bass work on it. I thought Jonathan did a real good job on the chorus of One and got a real Het sound to his voice. For time they cut down One a lot. Only about a minute and a half-two minutes long Movie Michelle Branch did some yacking Jim Bruer came on and did a metal version of "IF youre happy and you know it..." There was then a fan moment where 30 MetClubbers got to say 1 word about Metallica. I was picked by the club/mtv to be one of 'em. I'm the big dude with the ninja star hat and the justice shirt. Limp Bizkit then did Sanitarium *edit* Limp Bizkit got bood big time. I got to hear their rehearsal of it and the one they did for ICON was terrible in comparison. Durste goes into a long drawn out "leave me alone! leave me alone! leave me alone!" thing. It was limp bizkit doing metallica, eh, overall worst cover of the night in my humble opinion. Movie Sean Penn introduced Metallica Met hit the stage with a medley Hit The Lights Sandman halfway through the sandman verse something went wrong, Lars broke something? They started over Hit the Lights Sandman Blackend Creeping Death Battery Hit the Lights sounded great. Blackend was very fucking fast. Rob sounded great on bass. Then, the moment everyone was waiting for Frantic off the new album St Anger Very very heavy, lots of dynamics and tempo changes. Kick ass song. frantic tic tic tic tic tic toc great rif***e, very fast and heavy Jaymz said "were gunna do that again and ebtter for yall" and we got it twice. And that's a rap Possible spoiler of a surprise, don't read if you want to be surprised All and all it was a great time. Rob was fuckin full of energy and spirit. There is no drop off in energy from Jason to ROb, from what I saw tonight I think Rob might be even more active. That dude gets down when he's playing. The band just looked really happy and healthy tonight. The vibe comming from them was just incredible. Overall, great show and I'm looking foreward to it on Tuesday Night

Guest FeArHaVoC Report post Posted May 5, 2003 Another review from the show. Metallica Unveil New Song, Bassist at MTV Tribute Sun May 4, 2003 04:10 PM ET By Dean Goodman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Proving that no one does Metallica better than Metallica, acts such as Sum 41, Limp Bizkit, Korn and Avril Lavigne gamely covered songs by the hard rock group at MTV's annual tribute concert on Saturday while fans impatiently awaited a set by the honorees themselves. Playing in public for the first time with new bassist Rob Trujillo, Metallica ran through a fast and furious medley of songs, including "Creeping Death" and "Sanitarium," before unveiling the speed-metal song "Frantic" from their upcoming album, "St. Anger." Still a little rusty from a long layoff, Metallica performed "Frantic" twice after deciding that the first version was not to their liking. The medley also got off to a false start. The performance capped a taping that lasted almost three hours in a soundstage at Universal Studios. MTV will air its third annual "mtvICON" event on Tuesday at 9:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT. Fans in the audience included Kelly Osbourne, "American Idol" singer Ryan Starr, model Rachel Hunter and record producer Rick Rubin. The tribute kicked off with a Sum 41 medley that included "For Whom The Bell Tolls" and "Enter Sandman." The four members of Metallica then appeared on stage and walked through the excited crowd to their front-row seats on the bleachers at the end of the cavernous venue. The band's two-decade career was documented between performances on two giant video screens. The film wasted no time probing Metallica's troubled past, beginning with an examination of bassist Jason Newsted's exit and singer James Hetfield's rehab stint. On the other hand, the respective departure and death of original members Dave Mustaine and Cliff Burton were barely acknowledged. Aaron Lewis and Mike Mushok of Staind performed a brief version of "Nothing Else Matters" on acoustic guitar, later returning to repeat the song for technical reasons. Lavigne, barely moving from her mike stand, sang "Fuel" with her considerably more energetic band. Drummer Lars Ulrich visibly enjoyed the version; Trujillo and guitarist Kirk Hammett seemed less enthused. Rapper Snoop Dogg thrilled fans with a karaoke version of "Sad But True," while Korn earned a standing ovation from Metallica with their severely truncated take on "One." Limp Bizkit, one-time targets of hatred from Ulrich who previously described the band as the Motley Crue of the '90s, played a rap metal version of "Sanitarium." Presenters included Rob Zombie, Lisa Marie Presley, Travis Barker from Blink 182, actress Shannon Elizabeth, comedian Jim Breuer and Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. Michelle Branch introduced four U.S. Marines just back from the Iraqi war, who got a loud cheers. On the other hand, anti-war activist Sean Penn received scattered boos when he introduced Metallica. Joe Perry and Steven Tyler, leaders of last year's honorees Aerosmith, were scheduled to appear but did not turn up. Other no- shows included guitarist Slash and actress Lara Flynn Boyle. Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted May 5, 2003 So, besides the fact that Limp Bizkit got booed. It sounds like a rather lame show. All the covers sounded like they came off horrible, and should have been performed by bands that Metallica(early years) influenced, not just MTV darlings. I need a good laugh so I may catch a rerun of this over the weekend.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted May 5, 2003 I'll be watching it...if only to see how Sum41 did, and to hear the new Met tune. Say what you will, but Sum41 know how to play metal.
Guest Zero_Cool Report post Posted May 5, 2003 Yeah, Sum 41 do know how to play metal..it'll be interesting to see how well they covered their songs. Avril Lavigne doesn't belong covering Matchbox Twenty songs, let alone Metallica, even if it is recent. A rap metal version of Sanitarium has been created..let us listen to the shittiness of it once, and then never speak of it again.
