Guest caboose Report post Posted May 4, 2003 I don't really have the time to post all the depressing songs I've ever listened to, but the three most effective I found were: 'Fade To Black' by Metallica as previously pointed out (This has become more inspriational to me, but everyone else it bums out) 'Change' by The Deftones (This bums me out everytime) 'One' by Metallica (really pisses me off about war)
Guest DiabloIIFreak1010 Report post Posted May 4, 2003 Wow, I'm really suprised I haven't heard some songs mentioned: "Suicidal Dreams" - Silverchair (Silverchair is a great, great band, so much tallent. This song is basically about a guy who has dreams of suicide, simply put. You can find this on acoustic, but I think that the regular version is better) "Ana's Song" - Silverchair (Another Silverchair song about being anarexic, as anarexia is often called 'ana'. The lead singer/gituarist of Silverchair had tons of anerexic problems, and the lyrics just blend so well. Again, this can be found on acoustic, and I think the acoustic is the better version) Anything by Stabbing Westward is very depressing, but I think the most depressing song by them is their acoustic version of "So Far Away" or perhaps "Sometimes It Hurts". Also, I have a depressing alternative band called 'Glory Rise' that's in my town. They're fucking amazing, you can download three of their songs here
Guest DawnBTVS Report post Posted May 4, 2003 (edited) Dashboard Prophets - "Ballad for Dead Friends" Lyrics: How are you feelin'/Do you feel okay/'Cause I don't/It keeps me reelin'/Will I ever be the same/No I won't/It's a cold day in a cruel world/I really wished I could have saved you/Then who would have saved me from myself/Right now, well, I could use a stiff drink/To kill the pain that's deep inside my bones/Have you been dreamin'/I don't dream at all/I have nightmares/Memories careenin'/Have you come to kill what's left/Of my smile/There's no vacancy in paradise/I really wished I could have saved you/Then who would have saved me from myself/Right now, well, I could use a stiff drink/Kill the pain that's deep inside my bones/I really wished I could have saved you/Then who would have saved me from myself/I really wished I could have saved you/I'll never forget you/I'll never forget you/I'll never forget you/I'll never forget you/I really wished I could have saved you/I really wished I could have saved you/I really wished I could have saved you/I really wished I could have saved you Donny Osmond - "Puppy Love"...don't laugh, this always makes me feel horrible whenever I listen to it Edited May 4, 2003 by DawnBTVS
Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted May 4, 2003 The Number No Good Things Could Come Of by Glassjaw...Beautiful piano work, depressing and uplifting all at once.
Guest spiny norman Report post Posted May 4, 2003 Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U. Really really sad song. And in the film clip, when she sheds the two tears, it's just really depressing. Martika - Toy Soldiers A lot of John Lennon's work also really saddens me. Especially the Double Fantasy album, where it finally appears he is contented with life and knowing that shortly after he would die. Moon River by Audrey Hepburn. In the context of the movie it is a downer of a song.
Guest iamsherm Report post Posted May 4, 2003 As long as we're throwing out depressing Ben Folds Five songs, I suggest "Evaporated."

Guest DR PHIL Report post Posted May 4, 2003 Well, let's see: Bookends theme - simon and garfunkel Short but fucking beautiful Brians song-Johnny mathis Can be depressing and uplifting. Rooster-Alice in chains This song's depressing but would probably be better off in the angry catergory. And in my opinion, the greatest piece of music EVER: Adagio for strings by samuel barber You must download this! The section in the middle where it picks up is fucking incredible and never ceases to reduce me to tears.

Guest Walter Sobzak Report post Posted May 4, 2003 "Needle in the Hay" by Elliot Smith, which happens to be about drug addiction, so it REALLY fits.
Guest Anorak Report post Posted May 4, 2003 The Replacements - Sixteen Blue Loads of their songs are emotional and sad but Paul Westerberg just sounds that bit more resigned to depression here. Lucinda Williams - Blue Would be sad sung by anyone, never mind this beautifully. Matthew Sweet - Nothing Lasts One of my favourite closing tracks ever. Not a comforting or uplifting one though. Red House Painters - Katy's Song Could put you on a serious downer if you're in a fragile mood. The whole s/t album can be too draining too listen to all the way through sometimes. Eels: Not Ready Yet Captures an alienated and depressed mood really well. REM - New Test Leper A great later period track that tells a sad story. Less oblique and more direct/upfront lyrically than most REM songs. Janes Addiction - Ted, Just Admit It A funny combination of weird, discomforting and depressing in equal measure. Guest RepoMan Report post Posted May 5, 2003 The thing about "Brick" that make it all the more depressing is that I had kid at school shoot himself, my uncle died of cancer, a girl at school die is a car crash about 3 weeks apart right when it started getting constant air play. RATM's cover of Devo's Beautiful World is also really fucking depression. Given that Gary Jules - Mad World has made it 4 times so far by my count, and I would have put it at top of my list if others hadn't posted it, I nominate for the most depressing song ever. Guest Flyboy Report post Posted May 5, 2003 No Doubt - Don't Speak That one gets me every single time. "Don't Speak" isn't that depressing to me. A good heart-broken song, yes, but not depressing.

Guest tominator89 Report post Posted May 5, 2003 Breakups cause certain songs to become depressing, like ones that used to have a meaning...Oh well, aside from those, I can't help but mention Def Leppard's "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad", "Bringing On The Heartache", and "Miss You In A Heartbeat".
