The song I think you're referring to is "Terrible Lie", which is a NIN song off of the "Pretty Hate Machine" album. Is the singer of the song directing his anguish towards God? If so, it's definitely NIN. Unless Maynard did a NIN cover and I don't know about it. For my money, nothing depresses me lately like Cash's cover of "Hurt." I find it hard to watch the video. It immediately reminded me of my grandfather, whom I loved more than anyone this side of my mother and father.
