Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 Name the only pitcher to lose 3 games in one World Series?
Guest phoenixrising Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 George Frazier, 1981. All of them in relief.
Guest phoenixrising Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 Name the two players who hit over .400 in a season but didn't win the batting title.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 Joe Jackson in 1911 and Ty Cobb in 1922 George Frazier was the correct answer.
Guest phoenixrising Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 Correct. Joe Jackson hit .408 in 1911, the highest batting average by a player who did not win the batting title. Ty Cobb hit .420. Ironically, Cobb himself hit over .400 - .401 - in 1922 and lost to George Sisler. Sisler's average? .420.
Guest phoenixrising Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 NBA - Name the only two players in history to win MVP awards with more than one team. NFL - Name the quarterback who appeared in championship games in each year of his career.
Guest phoenixrising Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 Elmer Smith hit the first Grand Slam in WS history. The first pitcher to hit a home run was Jim Bagby. And the only person to turn a triple play in WS was Bill Wambs...something, I can never remember his name.. Eitehr way they all happened during the I think 1920 world series and all for the indians IIRC, didn't these all occur in the same World Series game as well?
Guest Harry Hood Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 For the NBA question I would say Kareem and Moses Malone...as for the NFL I have no idea but maybe Bart Starr? My questions: Who was the last person in NCAA history to be named Men's Basketball Tournemant MVP but not win the championship? NBA: Who is the only player in NBA history who has ever had a double double double, which is 20+ in 3 statistical categories.

That was one weird game. The pitcher that hit into the triple play hit into a double play his next at-bat, setting a World Series record for most outs responsible for in two at-bats.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 Who was the first player to hit a walk-off home run in a World Series game? Casey Stengel? I know he hit a inside the park homerun in the World Series.
Guest DrTom Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 Who was the first player to hit a walk-off home run in a World Series game? I'm going to go out on a limb and say Bill Mazeroski. I know his was the first bottom of the ninth with two outs game-winning homer, and I think it's still the only one.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 Joe Carter, and Kirby Puckett ring a bell.
Guest alkeiper Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 All 3 had walk-off home runs, but they weren't the first.

Akeem Olajuwan (I think) and Oscar Robertson.
Guest phoenixrising Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 NBA - Name the only two players in history to win MVP awards with more than one team. NFL - Name the quarterback who appeared in championship games in each year of his career. NBA - Harry got it. Kareem won MVPs with Milwaukee (1971, 1972, 1974) and Los Angeles (1976, 1977, 1980). Moses Malone won MVP's for Houston (1979, 1982) and Philadelphia (1983). I have to put a my bad here - Wilt Chamberlain also won for two different teams - the Philadelphia Warriors (1960) and the Philadelphia 76ers (1966, 1967, 1968). NFL - Otto Graham. Graham played in all four AAFC title games as the Browns QB from 1946-1949. The Browns entered the NFL in 1950, and Graham played in every title game from 1950 to 1955, when he retired. With Graham at QB the Browns won all four AAFC title games and three NFL Championships.
Guest phoenixrising Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 Who was the first player to hit a walk-off home run in a World Series game? This is a good one...I'm going to go ahead and say Babe Ruth.

Name the first American League reliever to win the Cy Young. For a bonus, name the reliever that replaced him as the closer a year later. Rollie Fingers Mike Marshall Sparky Lyle and Goose Gossage Vern, you got the last two but missed the first one. Jim Konstanty won the NL MVP in 1950. He won 16 games and saved 22 for the NL champion Philadelphia Phillies. He wound up being the surprise starter for Game 1 of the World Series that year and didn't do too badly, only gave up one run but lost the game. Mike Marshall won the NL Cy Young in 1974, going 15-12 with 21 saves for the Dodgers, and appearing in a record 106 games. Sparky Lyle won the AL Cy Young in 1977, winning 13 games and saving 26 for the Yankees. I'm trying to remember the title of Sparky's book, which I read and found very entertaining as he chronicled the 1978 season when he got replaced with Gossage and was moved into middle relief. Graig Nettles also had the quote about him "From Cy to Sayonara" as well.
Guest phoenixrising Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Trying to keep the thread alive... Who hit the first pinch-hit homer in World Series history? What player has the most hits in back-to-back World Series?
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Babe Ruth and Joe Dimaggio? Only catcher too win a batting title (he won 2)
EL DANDY~! Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Only catcher? Johnny Bench, who also held the home run record for catchers until Mike Piazza broke it...
Guest phoenixrising Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Ernie Lombardi won two batting titles.
Guest phoenixrising Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Trying to keep the thread alive... Who hit the first pinch-hit homer in World Series history? What player has the most hits in back-to-back World Series? First pinch-hit homer in a World Series - Yogi Berra in 1947. Most hits in back-to-back World Series - Lou Brock, 1967-68, 25. 12 vs. Boston in 67 and 13 vs. Detroit in 68.
Guest alkeiper Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Since no one got it, the first walk off home run in World Series history was hit by none other than Dusty Rhodes, in game 1 of the '54 series. No kidding, there was a baseball player for the Giants by that name. I think it gets overlooked because another WS moment occured the same game. Willie Mays caught a fly ball or something like that.
