Guest geniusMoment Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 My Reds just dominated the supposed division favorites, the cardinals. I am calling the central winner right now, of course its the reds. You might as well just cancel the rest of the season for the central and put the reds in the playoffs today. Graves, Wilson, Dempster, Austin and Riedling or Reitsma have showed they have the ability to pitch which is the only question the reds needed to answer. Their bullpen is great, with Williamson coming back into form. Aaron Boone has 10 home runs Austin Kearns has 10 home runs Adam Dunn has 10 home runs Casey has 5 home runs and is hitting over .300 again Guillen is this years Juan Encarnacion and is hitting over .300 with 6 home runs since he came up Plus Griffey is only about a week and a half away from returning. You can't stop Cincy, now the only question is how many dozen games will they win the central by.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 The Reds pitching sucks. They can't beat out the Astros.
Guest geniusMoment Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 If by sucks you mean great then I agree with you. The astros are no match for the reds. Besides I already called it and I am never wrong.
Guest cartman Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 If any team but Houston wins the Central I will be suprised. That is all.
Guest Lethargic Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 Plus Griffey is only about a week and a half away from returning. Well, the team will be sucking again in about a week and a half.
Guest alkeiper Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 The Central still looks like an absolute dogfight at this point. In any case, don't confuse one month of good play and four games of not-suckiness on the part of your starters with their true level of performance. Aaron Boone is not that good. If I had him on a fantasy team, I'd trade him before he comes back to earth. Kearns and Dunn are for real though.
Guest Bosstones Fan Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 Houston isn't going to win the Central. 3/5 of their rotation is too unreliable, the bullpen will end up overworked because of it, and their offense has shown (thus far) to be very streaky. Add in the fact that Jimy Williams couldn't manage a game properly to save his life, and you have a recipe for a third place finish, behind St. Louis and Chicago, in that order. Oh, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the Reds will finish BEHIND Pittsburgh in 5th place.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 IIRC, Cincinnati was great early last year, but completely imploded.
Guest PencilJobber Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 I think the Cards are going all the way this year well i hope they are anyway.I can't see the Reds taking the Central but i wouldn't count out the Astros but i still think The Cards have the ability to make the World Series and win it.
Guest Human Fly Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 (edited) The Reds have been a hot team for a few weeks now, but the Tigers just went on a win streak as well, and you know they aren't going to do anything. I agree with what has already been said. Not enough pitching in our starting 5 to make it all the way. We need to swing a trade, or get someone up from the minors who is actually good. Guest hardyz1 Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 Go Cubbies!! Yeah, I know, they'll choke eventually like they always do.
Guest geniusMoment Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 You guys are all going to look silly come October. I have already bought the champagne and decided to put it in magical ice that won't begin to melt until after the world series.
Guest Choken One Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 2003 world champs? I wish Man...Dont be fooled by a hot streak... 2004 howeever is the year of destiny.
Guest DrTom Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 If any team but Houston wins the Central I will be suprised. That's as farcical as picking the Reds to win.
Guest DerangedHermit Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 Plus Griffey is only about a week and a half away from returning. And a week and a half and a day away from getting injured again. I shouldn't talk, I'm a Mets fan.
Guest Choken One Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 Yep...Mets are such a sad case...At least the tigers are nice enough to admit they suck... Mets are in complete Denial. U know...Houston isn't that great as they were hyped and Chicago is bound the choke per usual and since Cincy has a jump on St. Louie... Cincinnati isn't a far fetched reach...when you consider they were IDENTICAL to the Angels two weeks ago with the angels at the 20 game mark...
Guest Bosstones Fan Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 Cincinnati isn't a far fetched reach...when you consider they were IDENTICAL to the Angels two weeks ago with the angels at the 20 game mark... I would hope that nobody is basing their hopes on that. Last year, every single thing that had to go right for the Angels to win did (and then some). I don't think I'd count on it happening again.

With World Series choke Tony LaRussa. They don't have the manager or the pitching to win the World Series.
Guest alkeiper Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 They have the pitching. What they need is a manager who realizes its the top of the 9th, the game's tied, and maybe, just MAYBE, it would be a good idea to PINCH HIT FOR THE FUCKING PITCHER.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 NTM, everyone starts out hot. Look at my Red Sox last year. 40-17 and looked to be running away with the AL East. And then...

Who besides Morris can you trust. Williams if he stays healthy, and that's always an if with him. The rest are at best mediocre.
Guest geniusMoment Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 Little by little everyone is begining to see the light. By tomorrow morning this will be an all red thread.
Guest Choken One Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Cincinnati isn't a far fetched reach...when you consider they were IDENTICAL to the Angels two weeks ago with the angels at the 20 game mark... I would hope that nobody is basing their hopes on that. Last year, every single thing that had to go right for the Angels to win did (and then some). I don't think I'd count on it happening again. Not at all. I was just saying that considering how far back the reds were...It wasn't far-fetched to believe that a team could come so far back... The Reds are CLEARLY the Most Offensive Powered Team in the Nationals, if not the entire leauge...The pitching isn't peachy keen but with a great Bullpen and closer in Williamson...The reds have the pieces... However, 2004 is the Year of destiny. Tonight Showed signs of 1999 in the team..Which is always great to see...Once again, the reds are faced with an Dilemma with the outfield postition... Kearns, Dunn, Junior and Gullien...It's time like this...You wish we had a DH in the Nationals so that Junior can just stand there and wop in 35-50 Homers and 125 RIBBIES and stay way from injury. Boone has been great so far, Casey is back at his level, Lopez is becoming a MAN at Short... La Rue is a Joe Oliveresue catcher whom can get any play put... They have the pieces...Just need that ONE ace pitcher and we're golden...
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 The Cubs and Cardinals will be fighting for the top spot in the Central and the Reds will be somewhere around last place with the Pirates and Brewers. If we're going to hand a team the division a month and half into the season, then I would say the Giants, who already have a 7 game lead on second place (Dodgers) and unless the Dodgers or D-Backs turn things around, the Giants look to have the west locked up.
EL DANDY~! Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 As a sports journalist...lemme put my two cents in. Just so you know, I write for a newspaper as well, not just 411. If the Reds can continue to play clutch baseball, they will end up being like another team who won via some clutch baseball, and then won the world series. That team also had a pitching staff who wasn't exactly setting the world on fire, an outfielder who wasn't a factor until about the midway point of the season, and a breakout star. The Angels, last year, had a bad pitching staff, Tim Salmon returned to form, and Garrett Anderson had an MVP like year. This year, Ken Griffey will probably return and be the Griffey of old, and Austin Kearns is making an early run at the MVP. Even Peter Gammons is saying that the Reds are starting to look like the Angels of last year. If that's the truth, don't be surprised if come September and October, the Angels are right in the thick of things in the National League.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Ha. If the Reds somehow do win the Central this year, Linder will probably think, "Well, if we reduce payroll even MORE next year we'll win the World Series"...

Clutch hitting is not a skill. And the Reds will compete because they have vauge similarities to the Angels of last year? Man, sportswriters are getting lazy. There's a HUGE difference between the Reds and Angels' pitching staffs.
Guest geniusMoment Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Did you guys see that game tonight. DESTINY. You guys all have to eat it now. Its over. Don't compare them to the Angels they're better than the Angels. They are better than the 98 yankees and 75 reds combined. They could beat 9 Jesus Christs in a game.
Guest Choken One Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Hey, Genius Stop acting like a fool. I am as big as a Reds mark as you...I think we DO have a great team in the making here but call this season DESTINY just because we have been VERY clutch in the last week is pushing it...You've shoved it way off by comparing them to the 75 Reds and 98 yanks... Right Now, It's a PUSH to compare them to the 1999 Reds. Genius, Remember last year around Late May when the Chicago Cubs had that run of Dramatic wins...and where did they finish? 4th. The reds had a dramtic 14 game winning streak in 1998 and where did we go? 3rd. Again, The reds are in the right direction but we're still not there... We could be the Angels of 2003 but wouldn't you rather a team with THIS much powerhouse become the new Big Red Machine? Because iT CAN happen because I've said it once...One good ace pitcher will elevate this team.
