Guest Youth N Asia Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 They've done Janet Jackson, Aerosmith, and Metallica. So who's next? Whether it's done right or not I really like the idea of the show. Sadly I think they're going to do a Madonna one soon, they give her a verbal blowjob any chance they get, so that's a gimmie. I'd like to see an REM one, but they've made no noise on MTV since Monster, so I doubt they'd give them one. Who should be next?
Guest stardust Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 I'm actually surprised they haven't done Madonna already. But I'd say they'll either go with her or Michael Jackson (even though the most he's done recently is dangle a baby and get a detachable nose among other non-music related things).
Guest Choken One Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 It's time for something Rap/Hip Hop related... Janet-Pop/R&B Aerosmith-Classic Rock Metallica-Hard Rock That points to something in the Rap Hip Hop Genre... LL Cool J NWA Run DMC Dr. Dre Would be the MTVICONs for next year to consider...
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Well, given the pattern proposed by Choken (which appears to be the pattern that it will go in), I'd have to say rap will be showcased next year. And, just for fun, some random rocker will pop up and cover one of their tunes. So...who could it be? 2Pac's dead, so he can't play live, and thus it wouldn't be about him (although he'd be my prime choice). Beastie Boys? Nope. A rap tribute with whitey in it wouldn't go over too well with the militants that already complain about white rappers getting more attention. I say Dre or Snoop, more than likely Dre. But, for fun, I'd like to see Eminem...with Insane Clown Posse covering a tune.
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 I'm all for Snoop getting the next show. For the live performance, Snoop / Dre...
Guest bravesfan Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Either Run DMC (for obvious reasons), or Dr. Dre. In Dre's case, the artists you can choose from to cover his music, will produce a great show. But if performers like Kid Rock and Grandmaster Flash/Funk Flex show up for the DMC tribute, that'll get MY viewership (KR's already done a great cover of one of their songs a few months after JMJ's death; I think it was My Adidas.)
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Run DMC U2 is a possibility down the line.
Guest Choken One Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 U2 has a chance but They never were an MTV staple like JJ, Aero, Talica or even the proposed Madonna, Dre, DMC's...
Guest kingkamala Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Prince. 'Nuff said. I totally agree, I'd love to see MTV give some respect to Prince, they haven't played any of his music videos since the mid 90's though.
Guest Lethargic Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 They're not gonna do somebody like Prince. This just another marketing tool. MTV isn't gonna push Prince anymore. It has to be somebody that is still in rotation on MTV and has a album coming out soon that needs to be promoted.
Guest Mik at Cornell Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 They're not gonna do somebody like Prince. This just another marketing tool. MTV isn't gonna push Prince anymore. It has to be somebody that is still in rotation on MTV and has a album coming out soon that needs to be promoted. This makes Dr. Dre a fantastic candidate. His next and final album Detox comes out next year, which is a concept album being promoted as a hip hop musical. I bet it's gonna be amazing and this could be used to promote. And I can already hear some people complaining about how rappers never stay retired, it won't be his last album, etc. Keep in mind that the man only has 2 solo albums and waited a decade between releases. Also he makes about 50 mil a year without an album of his own.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 U2 has a chance but They never were an MTV staple like JJ, Aero, Talica or even the proposed Madonna, Dre, DMC's... Was Metallica really a staple of MTV? Sure they played their videos, but they played U2's has well.
Guest Choken One Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 True...U2 these days aren't focused as the Band but merely Miracle Bono and his side kicks...
Guest Youth N Asia Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 I don't think Prince would get it cause he wasn't been relivent on MTV in the past half dozen years or so.
Guest Midnight Express83 Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 U2 has been on MTV since like 1984, and they will stay on MTV. They might not show their videos in heavy roation all the time now a days but they are one of the biggest bands in the last 22 years. Artist getting the nod might be Dre or Run DMC.
Guest snuffbox Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 Guns N Roses...original lineup(or at least close) only.
Guest Midnight Express83 Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 For Gun N Roses to get it, they would have to you know, release their new album. Which is what 10 years delayed?
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 MTV could do some sort of tribute to the pioneers of rap, since Raper's Delight was released almost 25 years ago. That's considered the first main stream rap song.
Guest SweetNSexyDiva Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 I'm thinking Dr. Dre. I hope not Madonna!
Guest Mole Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 I was going to start the same exact topic, but Youth beat me. Dr. Dre should defiently get it next, he is defiently an ICON in the music business.
Guest BAR Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 I know none of these bands would get it, because, hey, it's MTV but... Kyuss Pink Floyd Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin Well, maybe Sabbath or Zep would possibly get it.
Guest cartman Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 Dre will probably be next. Just imagine the other rappers/rock bands covering Dre's songs.
Guest Midnight Express83 Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 More like, other rappers covering other rappers on Dre's Song.
Guest Choken One Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 Nah...They would get Saliva to go Nuthing but a G Thing and 12 stones to do "Forgot about Dre"...
Guest evenflowDDT Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 I actually wouldn't mind seeing a Madonna ICON, because, despite the fact she's only had a handful of good songs in the past few years, her early material is still great. However, I've never seen one of these shows, do they just play the newer songs or is it a mix of all their material?
Guest razazteca Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 Beastie Boys, so they can have more of the MTV friendly punk bands ruin some classics. But I would not mind SOAD or Zach de la Rocha or Korn do some Beastie Boy songs. But the taught of 50 Cent or Ja Rule or Nelly doing Intergalatic scares me.
Guest spiny norman Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 Vern Gagne, I must say that Raper's Delight is a very intriguing title for a song. Anyway, I say Madonna. Even though I'm worried we'll get Britney, Christina etc. butchering her songs, but Madonna is undoubtedly a huge icon, and she deserves it, because really how many people can stay on top for as long as she has?
Guest Youth N Asia Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 Madonna's on top now due to reputation and past work. I understand why her early stuff is popular, even though I don't like it. But the stuff she's put out in the last few years has been shit. And she took a big dive in album sales. I think she went from #1 to #8 in a week.
