Although the game isn't playable on the show floor at this year's E3 event, THQ has revealed new info on WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain in their press booklet:

Relive the drama like never before in Smackdown! Here comes the Pain. Create, play and develop your own Superstar through storylines developed exclusively by WWE writers. Track your progress with seasonal stats, earn money to build up Superstar abilities and unlock hidden elements. Featuring enhanced gameplay, new match types and better production values the most electrifying brand in sprts entertainment will ignite the Playstation 2 this holiday season.

Features

-Exclusive story mode with original storylines developed by WWE Staff Writers.

-Unique Superstar abilities featuring real-life attributes of strength, submission, technique, speed, and stamina.

-New and improved controls including an in-depth countering and interactive submission system.

-All-new match types including Bra & Panty, First Blood, and Elimination Chamber.

-Enhanced production values featuring dynamic camera transitions, an improved audio experience, Superstar voice over and more-realistic animations.

WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain is set to release during the Fourth Quarter (fall/winter) 2003.

Umm...

Given the way this year has gone, does having storylines created by actual WWE writers strike anyone as a GOOD idea? I actually liked some of the fictious storylines in the second year of the SD4 that had nothing to do with the WWE writers.

First Blood... bout time you can get busted open in a SmackDown game.

Elimination Chamber... could be very interesting, but could be absolutely awful.

And I'm still waiting for a game to have a standard camera angle that is on the side of the arena, not the opposite end from the entrance ramp. If they want to have an authentic TV-like presentation, this might be a nice, REALISTIC, way to start.

Interactive submission system? You mean I WON'T have my character tapping out to a fucking submission move that the part it wrenches has barely been touched? I'm stunned.

I've been waiting for this game for probably two months now. It just isn't coming soon enough. I'm glad they're chagning the submission system though. The Smackdown series has had the same submission system since the first game and it has always sucked

Interactive submission I'm guessing means that another character can break up a submission.

Wait if Superstars are getting real life attributes like speed, technique, stamina, and stuffy, that probably means that the CAW and actual gameplay has been changed (probably slightly) as well.

...I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Oh boy! Now I can finally have a Big Show vs. Rikishi bra & panties match!

GROUNDBREAKING!!!

Just when I thought Smackdown couldn't get any gayer, they get the writeers to do the Season mode. Maybe some day, if I work hard enough, I can spill coffee on Triple H!

...you know, that sounds so true...

I wouldn't be surprised if these "original" storylines are that shallow and rehashed.

HHH always won both the Royal Rumbles in Smackdown 4, so we at least know one thing that'll stay consistent with this game.

*Hopefully*, this game will have Stevie and Victoria....it better have 'em, dammit!

I'm not sure, but I think they'll at least have Stevie's moveset as an unlockable one.

Ummm... bra and panties matches? WTF?

and hooray for first blood- haven't had a game with blood since.... WWF Attitude for the PS1

Not to mention doing a CAW for either one of them is not hard, Yuna.

Yes, this game needs a major overhaul... I actually did a review on it when I applying for a job as a game tester back when I first moved up here.

More Advanced Stats: what Tino posted is a good start, but I always said that the needed to go with a 1-10 scale rather than 0-4. It allows for better customization.

Interactive submissions: That should have been there from the start, even though the unbreakable submission holds actually helped in certain matches, like the six way dance.... but yes this needs a change.

Improved Countering: Just Bring It was too easy to counter moves, Shut You Mouth was too difficult.... there were matches where I could (and would) lose because the opponent got the first shot in, desite hammering the damned square button the whole way through. Countering should ALWAYS be based on proper timing, rather than a button mashing fest, despite who the rest of the game engine operates.

Blood: this is what I liked about the Japanese imports, in that if you got run into a post or got hit in the head too much, you would start bleeding, I hope that its not constrained to the First Blood match they advertise. I like the fact that I can bust someone open with a chair, if I want to.

The Money for abilities and possible movesets is a decent idea, although the cost for improving your wreslter should get hella steep the closer you get to maxing him out.

But the WWE writers, in charge of the storyline??? THAT is going to suck big time, as they haven't proven they can write anything worth a damn for the REAL LIFE roster in YEARS.

I really... REALLY hope the got rid of the huge areas to explore in order to speak to wrestlers to get matches or further an angle.... the way I see it they should have 1-5 wrestlers around the arena at all times, and depending on what you say to them get you a match, in the ring or out of it.... but the World and the freaking subway station was a MAJOR waste of time. I would rather do a circuit of the building, see if i can;t start something, and then get on with the damn card. Speaking of that, the card needs to be more than three matches. Seven would be ideal, but five seems to be more plausible....

On another topic, I wish the someone would remake Mat Mania, only with about 50 wrestlers... same basic game, but better.

Wha? I saw Austin win it once.

Well, in my 3 seasons, HHH won all 6 Rumbles.

In all the seasons I played, it was always someone different. Not once do I remember it being Triple H.

If they're not in the game, then hopefully their vid and music is. I don't mind making CAWs, in fact it's rather fun to watch the generic model change into something of your own creation, but without the entrance music, it's just not the same! I couldn't figure out what else to use, so in SYM, Stevie has Jeff's entrance vid, and Billy Gunn's pose/music.

Maybe this is an outlet to see what the WWE writers are capable of since I don't think Vince or Steph really gives two shits about approving storylines for a videogame. They could be all intricate and captivating and stuff.

Mind you, it could also lick balls.

That's weird. I've only played the season mode twice.

In the first, I played as Kurt Angle. Don't remember who won the first Rumble. Faced Hogan at WM first year then Benoit the second.

Second time I played as Brock Lesnar. Rock won the Royal Rumble but lost his spot to Hogan at No Way Out. Austin won the second.

Maybe HHH just hates you and is holding you down through your PS2? Heh.

I've played through season four times, and I can't recall HHH ever winning the Royal Rumble. He may have won but lost the slot to Hogan at No Way Out once, but I don't remember. I do know I've never faced him in the Wrestlemania main.

Not sure about SD3 and 4, but SD2's countering system was all about timing. Constant hitting of the square button doesn't do a thing.

I am getting this game because it'll have Hogan, Piper, Steiner, Goldberg, Mysterio, Cena, and a whole lot of new guys. I hope Stinger, Savage, and the Ultimate Warrior come back in the next few months. Then they would all be in it. Their limitations wouldn't show up on a video game, so it would be great to play as them with their original theme music and taunts. I don't even watch the shit anymore so I'd be willing to have those guys stink up my TV for as long as they want.

In most of my season's, Benoit won the Rumble. HHH won it once.
