Guest 5_moves_of_doom Report post Posted May 19, 2003 This has probably been done before, but in light of the best songwriter/guitarist of all time thread, I just felt like posting this. Anyhow, who do you think the best vocalist of all time is? I'd personally have to go with Freddie Mercury -- reasons being quite evident if you just listen to any Queen songs. He was an excellent singer, and he had some very, very good songs to sing to, so I suppose that's that. Just for the record, close second would be David Bowie I think, and then Robert Plant in third... though I didn't really take too much time to think, there. But yeah, this could lead to SOME interesting discussion... your thoughts?
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted May 19, 2003 Prince, definitely. After him, I like Bon Scott, Axl Rose, and I agree with Freddie Mercury.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2003 Freddie Mercury blows everyone away when it comes to vocal capabilities. He's simply the G.O.A.T. My other personal favorites are Mike Patton, Chris Cornell, Scott Weiland, and Rob Halford.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted May 19, 2003 LEMMY ...and Bruce Dickinson...
Guest DawnBTVS Report post Posted May 19, 2003 Kurt Cobain was pretty dinstinctive and other votes to less obscure picks like Noel Gallagher, James Hetfield, Alanis Morissette and Anthony Keidis, Kleidis, whatever from RHCP.

Guest DrTom Report post Posted May 19, 2003 Restricting it to the various iterations of hard rock, I'd have to say Freddie Mercury. Below him in the pantheon would be Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, LEMMY~!, Steven Tyler, and Chris Cornell.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted May 19, 2003 solely for his vocals on 'plastic ono band', john lennon clenches it. without it, he probably wouldn't even be in the top five, but on that record he pours every ounce of his being into his vocals and it puts everyone else to shame. more powerful than ANY other voice i've ever heard. Guest Downhome Report post Posted May 19, 2003 Ok, I pray that this folder isn't like the WWE folder where I get flamed for speaking my mind, heh. Here are a few of the people who I truly feel are, if not the, then some of the greatest vocalists of all time. For me to pick just one, would force me to listen to tons of their music and just really think about it. Here we go... 1) Roy Orbison 2) Dean Martin 3) Elvis Presley 4) Frank Sinatra 5) Bing Crosby 6) Patsy Cline 7) Conway Twity 8) The Platters 9) Sam Cooke 10) Michael Jackson 11) Jewel 12) Joe Cocker 13) Alison Moorer 14) Tony Bennett 15) Mariah Carey ...yeah, I love my older music for the most part, and truly feel that THE greatest vocalists of all time came from years gone by. I do recognize talents like Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Jewel, and even Folk/Country singer Alison Moorer, as I feel they have tons of voal talent, even if they either aren't very popular or not all that known. Guest godthedog Report post Posted May 19, 2003 no way should a)elvis be above frank sinatra, and b)mariah carey be below jewel. good list aside from that.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted May 19, 2003 Take Jewel off Downhome's list and put Sammy Davis, Jr. on there and that would be pretty close to mine. Roy Orbison is very underrated and unknown by a lot of people today. I'd put Frank Sinatra at the top of my list. The man could maintain notes and breathe at the same time. That is a rare talent. I'd have Marvin Gaye on my list too.

Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted May 19, 2003 no way that Robert Plant or James Hetfield should be mentioned as the G.O.A.T. or good. I also mention Freddie and Bruce, Sammy Davis Jr., Sinatra...but to add a few. Jim Morrison Layne Stayley (i'm tired so speeeling is not an issue) Roger Daultry Ian Anderson
Guest DARRYLXWF Report post Posted May 19, 2003 Rob Plant may not be the GREATEST, but he'll always be a memorable singer and frontman and my personal favourite.

Guest Memphis Report post Posted May 19, 2003 This thread has been done a million times but who am *I* to appease the masses. I vote for Axl Rose based on his ability to carry a tune. He is, by far, the most impressive and talented vocalist I've ever had the privelage of experiencing. Just below Mr. Rose, for me, would be Steven Tyler, Jim Morrison and Meat Loaf. B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2003 Fallon is the man. Very cool voice indeed. Maynard still has perhaps the most unique voice I've heard in quite some time. I can't believe no on ehas mentioned Steve Pery. That guy is a vocal GOD. And props go out to the guy who said Paul Rogers.
Guest Midnight Express83 Report post Posted May 19, 2003 My top 10: Notice, some may not agree, oh well 1: Luther Vandross, he could sing the phone book and make it a hit. 2: Patty Labelle, ditto and she doesn't need a mic to have the whole crowd hear her. 3: Eddy from the Temptations. I never got his last name but he was the first lead singer of the group. And did such hits like "Aint to Pround to Beg" and "My Girl". 4: Michael Jackson, king of pop. And is Da Man when it comes to music. 5: Prince, he has the voice to give a girl an orgasm without even trying. 6: Bruce Springstein. His voice fit his music and message so well. 7: Janet Jackson, just as her brother. And she makes you feel her music. 8: Stevie Wonder, just listen to his music and you know why he is one of the greatest of all time, period. 9: Freddy Mercury of Queen. As many said on this board. 10: Mariah Carey, she has that voice that nobody can hate.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2003 7: Janet Jackson, just as her brother. And she makes you feel her music. Meh, I like Janet's music, but her voice, to me, is nothing special. She soud like Michael at 10 years old. I do dig the rest of your list though.
Guest Insanityman Report post Posted May 19, 2003 Well, my musical tastes really make my list far from the truth. Meh, whatever. In no order... Jim Morrison, Frank Sinatra, ...Axl Rose, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley ("Man in the Box" comes to mind), Bon Scott, Elvis, and thanks to my mother always blaring it in the car- old school Bruce. (I am very tempted to snap her "The Rising").
Guest Mr. X Report post Posted May 19, 2003 Without a doubt, Freddie Mercury is at the top of the list. Some other decent vocalists that I like but don't think they're the greatest of all time are: Burton C. Bell - The singer for the now disbanded Fear Factory. The guy has a decent range, he can scream but he also can hit the melodies very well. Till Lindermann "Rammstein" - The guy has a great voice. No gurly Michael Jackson type voice to be found here. This guy could sing opera if he wanted to. Corey Taylor "Slipknot/Stone Sour" - I might catch some slack for this one but Taylor has a pretty good voice when he isn't screaming. Maynard James Keenan "Tool" - The guy has a pretty good voice, which seems to mesh well with the bands music.

Guest DrTom Report post Posted May 19, 2003 1) Roy Orbison He's not in the genre I focused on, but Orbison was indeed tremendous. It's my belief that "Pretty Woman" is the best rock song ever recorded. Orbison just emotes so fucking well on every note he sings... it's incredible. Van Halen's remake can't hold the proverbial candle to Orbison's original.
