Another "What do you think of these movies"

Recommended Posts

Mom and me went to the video store yesterday and rented four movies, three of which feature Ed Norton, so I figured I'd get everyone's thoughts on 'em.

25th Hour - A bit dull at times, but it was otherwise wonderful to watch. What was a little bit amusing was that in Red Dragon, Norton and Philip Hoffman's characters were enemies, but in this movie, they're best of friends. My fave part of the movie has to be Monty's "Fuck You" mini-rant. Pure gold.

Fight Club - This, along with Hannibal, is one of those movies that I never thought I'd enjoy so much. I can remember me being on the computer while mom and my older sis watched this movie. Back then, I thought it was just simply retarded [i honestly wasn't paying much attention to it], but now, I really enjoy it. Awesome, awesome acting by both Norton and Pitt. The violence was a bit much, but I enjoyed the whole psychological aspect. Hell, I've watched the music video, found on the 2-disk DVD set, at least twenty times.

American History X - I barely remember this movie, so I can't really post a review about it. But I'm curious as to what everyone else thinks of it, along with the other two.

Side-Note: I'm beginning to notice a trend. In every movie I've seen of Norton's, except The People vs Larry Flynt, there's always a scene where he's shirtless. Not that I'm complaining, of course, just pointing out an observation ^_^

25th Hour: haven't seen it

Fight Club: fabulous, probably my second favorite movie of all time (first is TCM), but probably the second most misunderstood popular movie of all time (after American Psycho)

American History X: I like it a lot, the only problem I have is it has a tendency to be overly melodramatic

25th Hour: Fantastic film. The entire cast plays their roles to a tee, with the standout being Barry Pepper who is the only member of Monty's group that manages to look past his "last night" and recognize the real problem.

Fight Club: Only have seen it once, liked what I saw, I find the movie smarks tend to overrate it.

American History X: One of my all time faves. This movie should be required viewing in any class in high school dealing with race relations. One of the hardest endings to watch, even five years later.

You must get Primal Fear, its his break out performance.

Ever notice that Ed Nortan can play a good crazy character almost as insane as Christopher Walken at times.

Not that I keep up with movie talk, but from everything I've seen, Norton is probably the most underrated actor in Hollywood. Again, I don't read much of the movie discussion shit so I couldn't tell you for sure. It's basically like me never logging on to this board and telling you that Benoit is one of the most underrated wrestlers in the business. Does Norton get that much praise? Why don't you tell me.

Never saw 25th Hour, but I loved Fight Club and American History X equally, for different reasons obviously. AMX tends to get a tad melodramatic at times, but I do believe that it has two of the most remarkable scenes I've ever seen; firstly, when they are playing the game of pick-up basketball, and you get the feeling to cheer for the skinhead nazi bitches when they win, complete with the uplifting music. One of the most disturbing scenes is the curb scene, and that wasn't even on camera, but I guess that makes it so much more effective.

It's even more then that Yuna, and I hope you realized what a crime it was to tune out of it originally.

Fight Club is a teenage rebel movie for 25 year old men. It's a movie that makes you question your values, beliefs, and priorities. It kicks you in the ass, tells you you're a dumb fuck, and then tells you that you're being distracted by shit you don't need. (Odd, since no one NEEDS to watch movies.)

Norton isn't really that underrated. He doesn't get the mainstream media coverage someone like Tom Cruise gets, but he's considered to be a good actor by most.

25th hour: Haven't seen it.

Fight Club: The first half is real good. Other than that it's overrated.

American History X: Great acting. Good movie.

That's unpossible!

No one comes close to Walken when it comes to playing fucked in the head pure wacko characters. Walken is even scary looking when he's being nice...Norton can't touch that.

I made a topic for Primal Fear a while ago, and indeed, that movie fuckin' owns. In fact, it was the movie that cemented me as a Norton fan.

Yeah, I do. Primal Fear may be Norton's breakout performance, but I think Fight Club is one of those that he'll be remembered for.

norton gets more critical praise than just about any other actor under 40 (especially for AHX); he's considered the closest thing our generation has to a de niro or a pacino. and most younger movie buffs love him to death. if anything, he's overrated i think.

I haven't seen 25th Hour so I can't comment on that.

Fight Club is a great movie...some people may feel it is overrated though.

American History is an amazing movie and Norton's performance was great.

Even though I liked X, I found it a bit too Hollywood to watch him change from a venom filled skinhead so quickly. As a former (non-racist) skinhead, I knew quite a few nazis and WP hammerskins, and it would have taken more than that to change their views. I do understand WHY they had to make the movie so Hollywood (it WAS made by Hollywood after all) just would have liked it more if it wasn't so hollow at times.

And I always disagreed with the curb scene; those used to be called Doc Maarten Dental Plans, and wouldn't kill someone. Shatter their jaw and destroy their teeth, but not kill them.

Fight Club I love. Pitt is amazing, and Norton plays his part perfectly. I liked the book better, but no complaints about the film.

25th Hour I haven't seen yet. I saw like 5 minutes on a flight to the UK but didn't know where it was in the movie and didn't want to find out that I was watching the end, so stopped watching. I'll be surprised if I'm a huge fan, though, i tend to not like Spike Lee joints.

Why do you think he's overrated? Just curious.

EDIT: Oh, and what's the name of the book that Fight Club is based on? I would look it up, but I'm using a school laptop at the moment.

Yuna, Fight Club is based on the book of the same name. Written by Chuck Palahniuk. (be forewarned that a lof of people don't like his writing. Check out the comic book/literature forum for other opinions)

He's not saying that Norton's not a good actor. I believe he's just saying that he's loved so much that it makes him somewhat overrated.

He has a point. I mean Norton hasn't done that many GREAT movies, but everyone seems to consider him to be amoungst the acting gods. Don't get me wrong, I like Norton and think he's a good actor.

I know he wasn't saying that.... I was just curious as to why he said Norton was overrated. I knew no matter which way I'd say it, it'd still make me sound like some defensive fangirl, even though I was simply curious.

Just saw American History X and......wow. That movie really makes you think about things. Great acting, and the ending was one of those tense moments that you *know* something bad is going to happen...like, things are just too good... but you don't know what. I kept thinkin' Norton's character was going to die at any moment, but....heh, I was wrong.

Also, does anyone know if there are different versions of the movie? Reading through some of the interviews on Norton's site, I think there was some problem between him and the director over editing. Anyone know anything more about that?

I heard about an alternate ending for X as well.

But for the question du jour: Haven't seen 25th, didn't like FC and loved AHX...
