Later on The Score, a second promo commercial for the show listed the actual HHH vs. Kevin Nash match. On the U.S. commercial that aired on In Demand, there is a Goldberg voice over where he says, "It's not about the title. He isn't even a man" and show photos of HHH and Goldberg. As has been reported for months, the original plan for the first Raw PPV was to be HHH vs. Goldberg. HHH had it changed and delayed so as to give Kevin Nash two title shots. Someone had to have gotten this on video, I hope... I want to see what the HHH/Goldberg ad looked like.

No, absolutely not. 30 people ordered his first superduper PPV debut. He was brought in to get a couple huge buyrates and revitalize interest. He failed. He should be canned. But HHH is out of control.

cawthon777 Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 You'll never see me start humping Goldberg's leg - but he has a lot more potential to benefit the WWE than Nash. Before Goldberg showed up, I gave him the benefit of the doubt. If the guy can better the product without the WWE redoing the whole lame ass winning streak, then I'd support him. And that's what he's done. He had, from what I understand since I don't regularly buy the PPVs, a better than average match with the Rock at Backlash. His work with Christian elevated Christian a lot more than it did Goldberg. Overall, without being pro or anti-Goldberg, I'd say he's helped Raw out quite a bit now that Rock is back in Hollywood. I think it was a smart idea to hold off on Goldberg / Triple H until later in the summer - maybe even Summer Slam. It's a money match, we're going to get it eventually. After Bad Blood, Raw will have 2 months to build a card for Summer Slam and I would be very surprised if we didn't start seeing the seeds be planted for Goldberg / Triple H the day following this next PPV.

I wouldn't blame him for the buyrate numbers - I would blame the overall crappy state the WWE is in at the moment. And if they expected him to draw WrestleMania-esque numbers for Backlash, well ... then I obviously give them too much credit when it comes to intelligence. I don't think anything will ever draw big numbers for Backlash. As far as revitalizing interest, didn't the Raw with the Goldberg / Christian cage match draw uncharacteristiclly high numbers? I would credit that to the WWE building and hyping the main event(s) for the following week and, as far as that specific show went, keeping a good flow throughout the telecast so that the casual viewer keeps interest. They failed to repeat that same formula this past Monday, although the tag title match was very solid, IMO.

It doesn't matter if he stopped being a draw for WCW, because in WWE he would be NEW and FRESH. Chris Jericho was never a draw for WCW, and was only a midcarder, but the second he showed up on Raw, he was over like a god, and the crowd were rabid for him. It didn't matter that he was a midcarder in WCW, or that he had been off tv for about four months before showing up on Raw, he was NEW and something FRESH, and had the potential to be something big before it got botched. Goldberg v Rock would have done a great buy rate solely based on the fact that it was Goldberg v Rock. After the first Raw Goldberg was on, I was willing to have PAID to see it. I hate paying for WWE events, and yet here was a match I would have gladly paid money to see. I can guarantee there were tons of people who were willing to have paid for that match at that point in time. Sadly, WWE did what they always do lately, and they screwed a sure thing up by messing with Goldberg. Goldberg should have been something different from the rest of the WWE, and been a kickass monster, who flattened people left and right, didn't sell, and was huge deal. Instead, they put a wig on him, had him sell for Christian, get spoofed by Gillberg and not let him lay Gillberg out, and get laid out himself not once, but TWICE in his old hometown, and then expected people to pay to see him take on Rock. Goldberg could have had big drawing PPV matches with every top WWE guy if he had been handled right, and that is a fact whether people are able to admit it or not.

Isn't that hy they brought him in? To draw big numbers? He has no other redeeming value. Hogan/Rock headlined just as shitty a PPV this year and did better. Name value doesn't generally sell PPVs (unless your name is Mike Tyson), BUT what it does is have people take notice. Name Value gets peoples attention, but the ultimate responsibility is on the storyline that name is in. The WWE was so very, very, very, VERY stupid to assume that name value alone would work, so they didn't even bother to put together a good storyline. "Rock vs. Goldberg, that'll be HUUUGE. Why are they fighting? Oh I dunno, maybe because they never faced each other before... yeah, that's it! It worked for Hogan/Rock, didn't it??"
