The One &Only Beer/Booze reviews thread

Recommended Posts

Guest KanadianKrusty

I thought this could be fun, I think the title says it all, choose one (or many...) products and give it a star rating, you can give a description if you want, I'll start:

Molson Canadian: Goes down easily, tastes pretty good although it's missing a little something I can't put my finger on, but still pretty good and refreshing.

***½

Corona is overrated Dos Equis Verde is the better Mexican beer.

As a general rule most lagers are better than the usual Light beers.

Jack Daniels-taste is good, burning turns me off a little but fine if you chase it with something cool.

Jack Daniels tastes like crap IMO, I could take shots of varnish and it would be the exact same thing, but then again I don't really like whiskey... I'm more of a Vodka guy.

Mix it with soda or juice it will take some of the burn away. Coke and Cranberry juice mixes well with everything.

If you don't like whiskey than stay away from Everclear.

Smirnoff Vanilla Twist - Not really a fan of flavored drinks or mixed, but this is the perfect compliment to any soda or fruit drink there is. Can't even taste the alchohol, but the effects are there. Great especially with orange soda. ****

You're thinking of "beer". To put your finger on that, I'd recommend an Upper Canada Dark. I'd also recommend using your whole hand, to avoid embarassing spills or a loss of beer-drinking efficiency.

Reasonably priced - a 12 is still less than $20 Canadian, not bad for semi-premium - and it's got a surprisingly rich/complex dark beer flavour without crossing that line into tasting like soy sauce (stout is usually what has this problem*, rather than dark ale, but I've had some that had that Molson Kikkoman thing happening). It's not dark dark, which can be damn enjoyable sometimes, but this way it's actually refreshing and I can drink more than three at a time. A dark beer bender is a difficult proposition - I tend to get full way before I get drunk - but UCD actually makes it possible. Unfortunately, it also never fails to give me a wicked hangover, although that may be more my fault than its. 8.5/10.

EDIT: In that when something has this problem, it's usually stout that does, not "stout usually tastes like soy sauce", which is a filthy lie.

Newcastle Beer = *****

Newcastle Brown? I like those bottles it comes in.

I'm a bit of a boring lager boy = Stella Artois, Kronenberg and Grolsch (can't even spell it) do me just fine.

Guinness is *****, as is well, nothing else I've had is *****. Bass and Harp are at about ****1/2, but when combined with the almighty Guinness, you get a Black & Tan at *****, and a Half-and-Half at *****.

You could also mix Guinness and Bass with cider (not all 3 together, mind you)

Bass + Cider = Snakebite 3/5 stars

Guinness + Cider = Black Velvet = 4/5 Stars...

I'm not a big fan of JD either. (Had a bad experience with it in college). I like Canadian Mist. It's not exactly top shelf, but it's smooth, goes down easy...

Does anyone drink straight vodka?

If on the rocks can count as straight, yes. As long as it's good stuff (Grey Goose, Belvedere, Ketel One) I think it's pretty tasty. People drink shit vodka when they're like 15 years old and think that they hate vodka ... it's not vodka that they hate, it's cheap vodka.

I've actually not heard of Troika until I saw this post ... I did a little searching online to see if they were ranked in any of the "top tasting" lists, and didn't see them, but the lists online are pretty much shite anyways ... you always seem bottom shelf vodka in the top ten or so because it's a common name, so people vote it because they know it.

I'll check it out, and let you know what I think. If you've had it and like it, it can't be too bad, eh?

I drank a half gallon of Kamchatka once. I never touched vodka again. Yuck pooie. Ruskie tater water. You ever seen a Commie drink water? I will not stand idly by and let vodka corrupt and impurify our vital bodily fluids.

Jagermeister-Cheap, potent, and oh so *cough* smooth. One of the only things I'll drink ***3/4

My review of Mr. Beer:

The Mr. Beer kit comes with a two gallon fermenter, bottling spigot, can of hopped malt (mine came with Canadian High Country Draft), "Booster" (maltodextrin to add body), yeast, plastic soda bottle caps and some pretty worthless instructions. (Plastic caps for soda bottles were missing in the kit I had.)

Making the beer was simple enough: Assemble the spigot to the fermenter, sterilize the barrel shaped fermenter and lid with a bleach solution (1 tbsp per gallon water), rinse several times until the bleach smell is gone, add 4 quarts water, boil 2 quarts water, take off heat, add can of malt and Booster (or sugar if you are cheap), mix until malt is dissolved, pour into fermenter, add water until 8.5 quart line, add yeast, let sit for a few minutes then stir, seal with lid, let sit for a week.

After the week, clean some soda bottles (two gallons worth), add a bit of sugar to carbonate the beer to each bottle, fill the bottles from the spigot, cap tightly, wipe the bottles down if you spilled, shake the bottles, and let sit for a week at room tempature.

Like I said, the instructions suck. NEVER add table sugar to beer at any time, unless you like horrible cidery tastes in your beer. (If desperate, use sugar for bottling but only about 1/2 to 2/3 what the instructions say.) It also says to bottle after a week. Better would be to wait until most or all of the yeast on top has sunk to the bottom (can be up to two weeks.)

Finally the time for tasting the beer. After the week I opened up one and it was horribly cidery and barely carbonated. So I waited two more weeks before trying again. Much better but their was too much sediment caused by the sugar the Mr. Beer instructions said to add. It was pleasantly dark and clear too ( I could read through it which made my heart glad.) I think if I didn't add as much sugar to carbonate it would have been better yet. In any case it was better than most Milwaukee megabrewed beers.

More mixes from Mr. Beer cost about $10-$12 each and and come in a variety of flavors, which I'm sure are fine, but it is likely cheaper to buy ingredients at a local homebrew supply shop.

Bottom line: If you can make soup from a can, you have the skills to make beer. It's $30 bucks for a 2 gallon barrel shaped bucket and two gallons of beer (and around $5-$6 per gallon afterwards) and while not glamourous, it's effective.

Batch made with Mr. Beer instructions: * 1/2

(I'll add the results of my second batch soon.)

Edit: added Star rating.

Nothing like a shot of ice cold vodka. It's like being slapped by a really attractive woman. i try to keep a bottle of Ketel One in the freezer at all times - in poorer times it's Smirnoff.

Are the star ratings based on how well it gets you drunk or taste? Ah, what the hell... I'll do both. I haven't tried many kinds of liquor, though...

Bud: Taste- ***1/2, Drunk- **

Miller High Life: Taste- ***, Drunk- **

Icehouse: Taste- **, Drunk- *1/2

Vodka (any kind): Taste- ****, Drunk- ***

Whiskey(Jack, Canadian Mist, Jim Beam): Taste- **, Drunk- ****1/2

Southern Comfort: Taste- **1/2, Drunk- ****

Peppermint Schnapps: Taste- *****, Drunk- ***

Jose Cuervo Tequila: Taste- *, Drunk- ****

Tequila Rose (?): Taste- *****, Drunk- ***1/2

I'm pretty sure that's all I've tried....

Whiskey's taste too dissimilar to be graded as 2* across the board.

Jack Single Barrel tastes different than Old Number 7 tastes different than Gentleman's Jack. Let alone compared to Beam. Or the Irish Whiskeys.

Using the * rating, whiskey gets anywhere from a * (Old Crow) to **** (Jameson or Bushmill or Glenfiddich).

My drink of choice is Jack Single Barrel, on the rocks. Dirty ice for the second and third. Tasty.

I love a good Hefeweizen on tap with a lemon slice squeezed inside. *****'s for me.

Guiness is a ***** beer, but I only get the craving for this once a month or so. Still, when I get it, yummy for the tummy.

Dos Equis WAY better than Corona. Corona has to be the most overrated beer out there.

I recently just took a liking to Nevada Pale Ale. A decent ****1/2 beer.

My favorite beer for getting pitchers for at the sports bar for WWE ppv's is = Sam Adams. Just awesome. *****'s for me. I love me some Sam Adams, oh yes I do.

Gotta agree 100% there. I have never had Dos Equis "special brew" which is the green bottle. I have only had the regular brown bottle brand.

Bushmill's Irish Whiskey= ****

Excellent taste, although a little harsh, so it might be offputting to some. The drunk is unlike any I have ever experience. If you ever have the urge to smash up a car or accidentally impregnate someone, this is your whiskey!
