Matches that are thought of WAY too highly...

Recommended Posts

Guest Downhome

In the past few years, or hell of all time if you want to go that far, what matches do you feel are thought of way too highly by most people and you just don't understand it. In other words, what are some way overrated matches that you can think of?

The one that ALWAYS comes to my mind right off the bat is the Bret Hart vs HBK Iron Man match. Now, while it was a pretty good match and the such, I've just never understood why so many people like it, for a number of reasons. For one, Why the fuck was it an Iron Man match to begin with? What with the ending that it had, it basicly made the entire "Iron Man" match deal worthless. There was only one "fall" and that was AFTER the one hour was up. I know WHY it was done really, that being to give HBK the title while making it look like a fucked up ending. Still though, I would have much prefered them just say they were going to have a match, and then just had it go an hour (which would have REALLY shocked everyone), and then leave it at that.

For the match itself, it wasn't anything too special too me. A bunch of stalling, the traditional spots, and then that (what I call it anyway) somewhat dissapointing ending overall.

Sincerely,

...Downhome...

For me this conversation begins and ends with the Rock vs. HHH Iron Man match.

Flair vs. Austin from Raw last year. I love both guys, but calling that a good match is a joke IMO. Chop chop chop, punch punch punch, rinse lather repeat for 15 minutes.

I've never seen the Rock/HHH Ironman and I do want to just for the sake of saying I've seen it. I agree though that HBK/Bret was over rated. It had 5 minute rest holds. It was so boring that the first time I saw it I fell asleep and had to rewind the tape and watch it again. Another match I've found over reated is Rock/Austin at X-7. It was a pretty good match with a great ending but it seemed as though it had all been done before.

Then he would have been DQ'd as per the stipulation.

I think he slipped up and threw one.

Shows you just how memorable that match was. I forgot that stipulation. But then again, the point of that stip was that they'd wrestle, and I didn't see any of that in that match.

I totally agree on the Hart/HBK Iron Man. NOTHING HAPPENS for about 45 minutes. Would it have KILLED them to go 2-2 or something? They could've done the EXACT SAME ENDING (Sharpshooter, leave, wait, it's a tie so it continues) but actually had something HAPPEN during the match itself.

And I've heard that it was because neither man wanted to drop the first fall. BULLSHIT. If HBK wins the belt, he takes the first fall. Is it THAT hard, really?

Well, when you're dealing with a group of very large children, I suppose it is...

As far as Rock/HHH Iron Man...I perferred it over the former, because STUFF HAPPENS. There's pinfalls, submissions, DQs, the whole enchillada. Plus, when HHH gets the advantage, it helped build up the Rock having to push from behind...but he lost anyway, so fuck it.

The reason I call the Rock/HHH match overrated isn't because people really like it...but because of all the "I can't beleive they were able to go for an hour" crap.

There was like...brief at best contact for the first 10 minutes...followed by 11 falls in the next 50...and they blew the ending.

Woah, back up! I thought the Foley-HHH series was great (at least RR and NWO). WM2K wasn't good, though.

WMIII Hogan vs. Andre will always stand out as a match that was *****'s emotionally, but without the drama was probably * at best. If Big Show and Hogan did that match for WMX9's main event, there would have been rioting in the streets, and a few attacks on Titan Towers.

But we've seen Hogan vs. Big Show before, and both of them were better when we got it in WCW. (OK, it Hogan vs. The Giant for you nitpickers, but whatever.)

Show wasn't bad at all back then.

...I mean he was no Benoit...but he could move real well.

I find it weird as hell going back and watching some early matches of The Giant. He just looked, well, so much thinner and whatnot back then. Hell, at times I thought he looked TOO thin. I wish he'd try to go back to being more like that though. My question, is CAN he go totally back to that size, or is part of the reason he is so big now because of the disease that he had?

I don't know. Andre used to be in a great shape too...but he ballooned up.

Show's young though...and probably doesn't drink a town dry every night...so I don't know

I heard some wrestler say somewhere the reason Andre ate and drank so much was because he knew he basically only had half a life to live because of his disease so he tried to fit a full life into half the time by enjoying himself.

Isn't Big Show's metabolism way down because of his disease? I heard thats why he doesn't play basketball anymore but I could be wrong....

OK. Downhome makes a good point with the WM XII main. Without a doubt. I didn't see much out of a few restholds...IN RETROSPECT. Of course we all loved it at first because it was Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels for Christ's sakes.

On to the other points already made.

Rock/HHH was a more exciting match and was crafted better, in my mind, because instead of a race to one fall in the first match, it seemed as if this match was basically, "See what you can do against my best moves." For instance: HHH gets Rocky with the Pedigree, takes a lead of 2-1. As SOON as the next fall began, a simple small package got the next fall. That's amazing brilliant, because it showed that HHH was a tenacious SOB who was gonna be on Rocky like stink on shit...

However,

I do think that for the match that was given to us, it could have been a little bit better in retrospect with a clean ending and better pacing. The way how they took the first part and made it look like it was going to be a war of attrition a la WM XII and then start having the fall fest kinda took away from the drama. The clean ending was just stupid, I think. Taker's entrance could have been best saved for afterwards.

As far as the HHH/Foley series is concerned. Watch Royal Rumble again and see if you can think of a better match in WWF/E history that had the deathmatch surroundings and the carnage and a BRUTAL ending on top of that. Yes I've seen other deathmatches outside of this one and the ECW "deathmatches" but I still think that for the story told, it was an outstanding match, and worthy of the five star praise. HHH's race to finally beat Jack at his own game was phenomenal, as he showed he was a tough SOB by taking all that punishment, and then doing an amazing sick move at the end to show he can hang with Jack. Great story, great moves. Great match.

And speaking of overrated matches...

Shane/Kurt at KOR 2001-Sure, it's good because it's a non-wrestler against the best pure wrestler on the roster...but all I saw was spot after spot after spot. The wrestling sequence just seemed out of place to me in the beginning.

It's not a great match because of the wrestling, it's and entertaining match because once in a while EVERYONE wants to see spots.

BOTH Iron man matches.

and, anything Kurt Angle has done. Seriously, think about it. People creamed over Angle/Lesnar and were calling it MOTN, when it wasn't. Some people have said Angle/Benoit is one of the best matches ever, which it wasn't. People even praised him for carrying Hogan and Show to good matches, which they weren't. (and other people on the roster had gotten better matches out of both)....

HBK/HHH from Summerslam.

I'm sorry, but that match was all Punch Punch Punch, Kick Kick Kick, Table Spot, Sledgehammer, Superkick, Pedegree into Rollup.

The ending was the worst part of that match. Very anti-climatic.

THERE WAS NO PUNCHING IN THAT MATCH!!!!!!

It was chop chop chop, chop chop chop, chop chop chop

If the #1 Gimp would make a correction, it was a lot of chop chop chop and a clothsline as the match was Wrestling Only, no brawling allowed.

Edit: And if I wanna make a correction onto myself, that clothsline looked a hell of a lot like a punch, but wasn't classified as one, even though I coulda swore it was one.

The parts where Shane breifly out-wrestled Kurt Angle (taking him down, riding him, etc) clearly sticks out as bad psychology in that match because that NEVER should have happened. Every suplex that Shane performed, technical hold (blown Sharpshooter, Anklelock) really takes away from the match in my eyes.

The HBK/Bret Iron Man was a very good match to me, but the thing that ruins it is the fact that both men couldn't put their egos aside to give us a few falls to make the Iron Man stipulation hold water. I didn't mind the restholds in the beginning because it was basically (story-wise) them trying to gain leverage, so it wasn't completely out of context. No, not a great, great match (it is a bit overrated), but it wasn't bad by any means.
