Terrible Blade Jobs

Recommended Posts

Guest Grenouille

After watching the WWF's Inside the steel cage tape it made me think about just how sloppy it's been done over the years, sometimes with very little effort to keep the illusion alive.

One match in particular on the tape, Bruno Sammartino vs. Roddy Piper had to have showcased the most obvious I've seen in my 18 years of watching pro wrestling. Bruno rams Piper into the cage three successive times and after each ram, Piper takes a big swipe at his forehead, then after the third he nonchalantly places the blade in his trunks and goes on.

This was the worst that I can think of right now, anyone remember any other instances that seem worse than this?

Do you mean the most obvious blades, or the least bloodflow? I'll give examples of both.

Obvious Blading: HHH @ No Way Out 2001. After he pins Austin, he visibly swipes at his forehead with the blade verrrrrrryyyy sloooowwwwwllllly....

Also, Taker in his Cell match with Foley blades super-blatantly after he misses his plancha.

Worst Bloodflow: Shawn Michaels at Summerslam '02. He blades near the beginning, and all the blood is gone by the end of the match.

Shawn's done enough mid-air bladejobs to get a free pass from where I sit.

I'll add Nakamaki/Ono from the deathmatch tournament, for a few reasons.....

1. It's obvious that he's blading.

2. He blades after simply having his head rammed into a table.

3. Blading in a barbed wire baseball bat, thumbtack match is really unnecessary. After both guys have 100 thumbtacks stuck in them, having bleeding foreheads is nothing.

On TNA a short while ago Saturn bladed and the camera zoomed in on the blade in his hand.

Nah, the worse was when I was watching WM3 with a bunch of friends and Billy Jack bladed right in from of the camera after Hercules hit him with a chain-wrapped fist.

WM VIII, I think, with Bret vs. Piper. Bret gets knocked face-down, takes an obvious swipe across the forehead, drips conspicuously on the mat, and then Piper hits him with a bulldog.

Good ol' Gorilla still calls it as if he was busted open on the bulldog twenty seconds after he started bleeding.

Shane Douglas vs Taz with the Franchise clearly has a "X" on his forehead.

On TNA a short while ago Saturn bladed and the camera zoomed in on the blade in his hand.

Bingo..........they had a closeup of him not just doing the gig, but even putting the blade back in his wristband. MOst blatant blade shot ever.

I was at an ECW show back in 2000 and had front row ringside. Raven took on Credible and did the most blatant bladejob in the corner after taking a table shot head first in the corner. He then casually threw his gigger out of the ring and the damn thing landed in between the open area of the front row between the two columns of sorts. F'n cool souvenir, thats for sure ;)

November to Remember '97: Tag title four-way dance:

Tommy Rich tried sneaking up on New Jack, and Rich wasn't making any effort to hide the blade in his hand (his right hand was clenched, and it didn't look "natural"). New Jack belts him with the guitar, Rich swipes his head to sell, and he starts bleeding...while still holding the blade in his right hand.

xpw's baptized in blood 1

in the final deathmatch, not only does supreme blade on camera, the camera zooms in to show that his opponent for the match john kronus is helping supreme with it. totally amateuristic and business exposing.

Much like the company itself.

WMX7 where Rock drops his blade.

That was pretty bad.

I'd also say Bret Hart at In Your House 5. It's pretty clear what he's doing when he's crouched on the ground outside of the ring.

Also Ric Flair at Wrestlemania 8 when he was outside the ring and he either hit the guardrail or the ring post. It was pretty obvious that he was blading.

Steve Austin at KOTR 98 when he lost the first blood match to Kane. Austin didn't hide that shit at all.

alot of whats being listed here werent really that 'terrible'. some of these bladejobs were only obvious if you were really watching for it and knew what to watch for.

HHH v Jericho hell in the cell. jericho gets up, holding on to the ropes and just starts hacking away at his forehead. It's a really stupid mistake that cameramen always seem to make. Why?

It's the directors fault really. If they know a wrestler is going to blade they should know to switch to an angle which doesn't make it look so blatent.

Vader at Halloween Havoc 1993 vs Cactus Jack. You couldn't actually seem him blade as he was hidden from the camera in a "grave" but the way he cut it made me think he had to blade because there was no way it would get busted open and look like that. I realised this when I was still a stupid mark and had no Idea what blading even was.

Just for the record, Undertaker is the all-time master for blading on camera.

The Nitro where Bischoff and Russo took over. Hogan blatantly bladed before Biaschoff's chair shot even hit him, it was a thing of beauty.

One of the most blatant bladejobs I think I've ever seen was at SuperBrawl 3 in Asheville, NC. - Vader vs. Sting/strap match.

If I recall, Sting had been whipping Vader with the leather strap on his back or something of the sort. Vader ends up out of the ring, and you can see Harley Race, just as clear as day, slicing Vader across the back to give the appearance of bleeding from the lashes. I remember watching that PPV live thinking "god, that was the most obvious thing I've ever seen in wrestling" - it may be edited out of the commercial version, but I know you can see it on the PPV version. If you've got it, watch it - it's actually almost funny, it was THAT obvious.

WrestleMania 2 - I think it was Nikolai Volkoff vs Corporal Kirchner.

Very blatant, and only about twenty seconds before the end of the match too.
