AFI's 100 years...Heroes & Villains...

Recommended Posts

Guest Downhome

This will air on Tuesday, June 3rd, on CBS and will be hosted by Arnold Schwarzenegger. I was just wondering who was going to check it out. Also, who do you want to see make the list? There will be 50 of each, just so you know. The process of choosing what is nominated is as follows...

The jurors have been asked to consider the following criteria in their selections:

HERO

Sometimes mythic figures, sometimes ordinary people who prevail in extreme circumstances, heroes dramatize a sense of morality, courage and purpose often lacking in our everyday world.

Heroes do what is good, just and right; and even though they may be ambiguous or flawed characters, they often sacrifice themselves to show humanity at its best and most humane.

For voting purposes, AFI defines a "hero" as a single character, a duo or a team of characters.

VILLAIN

Characters that movie goers love to hate - and hate to love.

Villains are characters whose wickedness of mind, selfishness of character and will to power are sometimes masked by beauty and nobility. Others rage unmasked.

Daring the worst to gain the most, the movie villains we remember best can be horrifically evil, merely sleazy or grandiosely funny, but are usually complex, moving and tragic.

For voting purposes, AFI defines a "villain" as a single character, a duo or a team of characters.

CULTURAL IMPACT

Characters that have made a mark on American society in matters of style and substance.

LEGACY

Characters that elicit strong reactions across time, enriching America's film heritage and inspiring artists and audiences today.

Additionally, only feature-length American films released before January 1, 2002 will be considered. AFI defines a feature-length film as a motion picture of narrative format that is typically over 60 minutes in length. AFI defines an American film as an English language film with significant creative and/or financial production elements from the United States.

...and go to this web page to download a list of everyone who is nominated, and to read some cool facts about it. One of which is...

Two nominated screen characters never appear on screen. They are Man from Disney's BAMBI and The Blair Witch.

...I know I'll check it out, this could be interesting and I can't wait to see who all makes the cut.

Sincerely,

...Downhome...

I don't think I'll be watching. I've watched every AFI special and liked them but this just screams out "we're out of ideas".

Glad to see John Wayne getting mad props. I think Rooster Cogburn makes the list easy and I'd like to see Ethan Edwards as well.

Sounds interesting, but I'll be intrigued to see how they stage to see if it comes well on the show.

I might, but isn't it running against Keen Eddie? I was thinking about giving that show a chance.

I'm gonna give Keen Eddie a try too. But I don't know if American audiences will go for a cop show with an almost exclusively British cast.

god bless the AFI for film preservation & the grants it gives to young filmmakers, but this whole obsession with lists seems really publicity whore-ish to me. they must be short on funds & looking for new angles to get more donations or something.

and i think ralph fiennes from 'schindler's list' is the perfect villain. very human, and at the same time pure evil.

I'll probably watch it if I remember .

However, I also want to try Keen Eddie. Guess I'll just have to Tivo something.

If you think that's bad, look at VH1. It seems every 2 hours a show is on about "25 best Rock Songs" or "100 greatest childhood actors."

I'll watch.

Can anyone tell me why the man in Bambi is a villain?

Because Man shot and killed bambi's mother and I think he also started the big forest fire.

Oh, well gee; I wonder...

Well, it's possible they could have used the "Sergio Leone Gambit" to keep Bond out.

What is the SLG? It's where you keep the best film in it's genre out of the Top 100, because it was made in another country. It was named such by people who were upset that The Good The Bad and The Ugly wasn't on the Top 100.

As Verne asked in the post directly above, why is the Man from Bambi on the list of villains. Because he killed Bambi's mother and started a forest fire. Sounds pretty evil to me.

I didn't know the Hunter did anything wrong killing Bambi's mom.

Not a hunter so I don't know if shooting a doe is illegal.

Now that I think about it, being nominated to be one of the greatest villains ever because you shot a deer and made some kids cry really isn't very good.

can't believe Krug Stillo isn't on the list. Frigge Ghostface from Scream is on the list, but Krug isn't

What is that, Last House on the Left or something?

What a fuck.

They should've nominated the evil buck who tried to kill Bambi in a forest fire until Bambi pushed him off the cliff.

Is Leonard from North by Northwest there?

Oh and they put craptastic villains in there but they forgot the quitessential henchman Robert Shaw's RED GRANT the killer in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. He was so great that every James Bond sidekick after him (Literally from Oddjob to Zao) gets compared to him.

Yeah, I was kinda being sarcastic, but all the guy was doing was hunting, as Verne said. Does that make all the guys in The Deer Hunter horrendous villains?

Why yes, I AM questioning the legitimacy of a Disney character.

And I agree with Z, Red Grant rocks.

Concerning Bambi, you are all looking at it the wrong way. The idea is to draw you into the world of the forest animals, and allow for you to feel for their trials and down times. To them, and to MOST viewers of the film, The Hunter is a HORRIBLE villain.

Personally, here's my top ten hero/villian list:

Hero:

Don Corleone (Marlon Brando)- The Godfather

Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster)- Silence of the Lambs

Carlito Brigante (Al Pacino)- Carlito's Way

Captain Willard (Martin Scheen)- Apocalypse Now

Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson)- Chinatown

Randal Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson)- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's NEst

Sonny Wortzik (Al Pacino)- Dog Day Afternoon

Jesus Christ (Willem Dafoe)- Last Temptation of Christ

Mr. White (Harvey Kietel)- Reservoir Dogs

Edward Norton- Fight Club

Villians:

Hannibal Lector (Anthony Hopkins)- Silence of the Lambs/Hannibal

Michael Corleone (Al Pacino)- The Godfather Part II

Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis)- Gangs of New York

Travis Bickle (Robert DeNiro)- Taxi Driver

Col. Kurtz (Marlon Brando)- Apocalypse Now

Max Cady (Robert DeNiro)- Cape Fear

thats all I can think of right now. I wanted to put in Tony Montant from Scarface, but couldn't decide if he was hero or villian.
