Guest Crux Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 (edited) PARENTS: IT'S ALL THONG A headteacher has angered parents by asking them to stop their daughters wearing thongs to school. Anna Roxburgh, the head of Hamp Junior School in Bridgewater, Somerset, made the plea to parents of Year 6 girls, aged 10-11. In a letter, she said she had no objection to thongs personally. But she was concerned for the girls' "possible embarrassment" while changing for PE, falling over in the playground or playing handstands. Hamp Junior is a mixed-sex school with 270 pupils aged seven to 11. One mother said the letter was "unbelievable". She added: "Schools lay down enough rules without going right down to undergarments." Another said: "I was surprised the school was not keen on thongs. I see nothing wrong with them." The child protection charity Kidscape has given its full backing to the head, however. Director Michele Elliott said: "Thongs are designed to ensure that you do not show a panty line through tight-fitting clothes. "Why on earth would you send a child to school with clothes that tight? "I think the headteacher is absolutely right and I think the parents need to rethink their child protection roles." A spokeswoman for Somerset County Council said: "It's up to the individual school to decide the code of dress." Here 7-11 year olds wearing thongs?! That's just disturbing... Guest Choken One Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 Not really since thongs are becoming more for UNDERWEAR comfort then sexual provocotations these days... Thongs are the BOXERS of the Female underpants...it's the next step of evolution...
Guest Crux Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 Its not like regular kid underwear isn't comfortable. I just dont see how its appropriate for a kid who is barely old enough to wipe their ass to be wearing that. Not that I think its in the schools authority, cause I dont think it is. Its just these kids shouldnt be worrying about panty lines and fashion at their age, imo.
Guest Choken One Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 I think its not a big deal...Thongs are just underwear to me at this point...
Garth Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 I think its wrong that schools should try to dictate what you can and can't wear underneath uniform, like recently at my school they tried to bad naval pierceings, but what are they gonna do check evry girls in school's naval?
Guest Ghettoman Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 The thong is still an item of fashion, it's sole purpose if not to distract young boys in math class is to make panty lines invisible, why in the hell are kids as young s 11 worrying about visible panty lines!? The pro's of banning them out-weight the cons so I'm all for it. School is a place to learn, not a place to make a fashion statement. Once they start making the arguement for it's comfort I'll listen....I'll laugh too, but there will be some listening....
Guest HollywoodSpikeJenkins Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 Oh please. Thongs are comfortable for 11 year olds? The only reason they are wearing them is so they can pretend to be older, which will end up getting them raped by high schoolers, and because Britney Spears or whoever their idol is wears them, and it's "cool". Get rid of them. They send a bad message to everyone, and will only screw over these KIDS.
Guest Fook_Hing_Ho Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 I'm not getting the whole 7-11 year olds wearing thongs, but I don't think the school has any right telling them what kind of underwear they can wear.
Guest JMA Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Eh, whatever. Most girls I knew started to wear them in late Middle School and early High School. No kid under thirteen should worry about this kind of stuff.
Guest NoCalMike Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 On one hand I don't see how any parent would send their child out anywhere, (not to mention school) wearing a thong, knowing full well what a male thinks of when he sees a girl in thong. Yet at the same time, I am not sure how this will be enforced. If the item of clothing in question is an UNDERGARMENT, then it shouldn't be visible anyway. If it is worn under the pants/shorts what the hell is the difference? If the girls are wearing the thongs up to the top of their hips like Lita does in WWE, then yes there needs to possibly be a "undergarments need to be worn UNDER your clothes" rule, other than that, no big deal I guess. Does anyone know a general school policy on bras?

I tend to agree with that. A better plan would be to first ban clothes tight enough to show panty lines, which is an easier argument to win, and then there will be less resistance when you propose the thong ban. When I was that age, panty lines were more arousing than thongs anyway.
Guest NoCalMike Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 When I was in highschool, girls cleavage did a lot more for the guys than the panties/panty-lines.
Guest Bosstones Fan Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Does anyone know a general school policy on bras? At both school disticts I attended, from junior high on up, girls were required to wear bras regardsless of the level of their, uh, development.
Guest My Eyebrow is on fire Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 When I was in highschool, girls cleavage did a lot more for the guys than the panties/panty-lines. Rappers are all about DA BIG GADONKA DONK, and the kids all want to be rappers...soooo
Guest Vyce Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 As sexually deviant as I am, even I feel that thongs on 11 yr. olds is just more than a bit too much. Go ahead and ban them.
Guest JMA Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 When I was in highschool, girls cleavage did a lot more for the guys than the panties/panty-lines. Chest cleavage is always good, but I always preferred the lower hemisphere.
Guest Mole Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 That's bullshit. The school should have NO say on what a student wears under their clothes, it should be up the parents only.
Guest SP-1 Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Hm. I think the school has a right to request it. The parents have the disciplinary right of way, I think, but the school has to manage and deal with these children for most of the day. If this article of clothing has the potential to cause a problem for some of these girls during school activities, then yes, the school has a right to request a change. A thong is not an expression, it's an article of clothing. Plain and simple. One that may be designed to do away with panty lines but one that has been evolved into a sex symbol by American pop culture. At 11, these girls don't even need to be thinking about that kind of thing. Not at all.
Guest Cancer Marney Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 More precisely, no one else needs to be thinking about their goddamn underpants. Maybe our schools would be better if the fucking teachers tried focusing on actually TEACHING rather than being holier-than-thou morality yardarms for the whole damn world.
Guest Mole Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 I think students should be able to wear whatever they want, especially hats. They say you can't wear them because it is a distraction, but I used to have a big ass fro, and I was distracted about my hair. If I was able to wear a hat, I wouldn't of been distracted like that. High Schools are sooo dumb when it comes to certain shit.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 That article is from overseas, but the problem exists here in the US as well. The whole thong argument stretches from the fact that the hip new fashion for girls is to wear low-cut jeans. Of course thongs (and any other type of undergarment) peek out a bit above the pants (think Lita). Im not sure that banning thongs is the right answer over banning the low cut jeans. No one would see the thong unless the girl is wearing a skirt or dress or something like that..and even then some stupid stuff would have to happen. I think more schools need to start either enforcing dress codes (schools around here have them but usually are pretty lax on enforcing things unless its something blatantly obvious, or at least they were 3+ years ago when I was in school). Hell, I would go for a strict school uniform policy. Uniforms are proven to improve the morale of most students as well as improve their grades.
Guest Cancer Marney Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 I agree; I had to wear uniforms in more than one school. They teach discipline and respect. It'd get rid of all this constant crap from and on school admins as well.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Uniforms don't make that much difference if the school is screwed up in the first place. They make it feel more like a prison. At a decent school it's a good move though.
Guest Riots bloodlust Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 It seems to me that trying to regulate underwear seems a bit over the edge. I also agree that there should be some dress code enforced for looser clothes, or no low cut jeans, or whatever, such that thongs aren't apparent. I see things like this, and I see parents who want the schools to discipline their kids, but get upset when the school tries to do anything about it. In any case, we're talking about a thong, which if you agree or not has been accepted by most as a sexual item or symbol, and prohibiting pre-teenagers from wearing it. This isn't something to really complain about.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 There should be a law about thong wearing. Like, an age limit (13 at the earliest), and a body frame (because I've seen my fair share of girls who SHOULD NOT wear thongs...wearing thongs).
Guest Ripper Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 But...but how do they know if these little girls are wearing thongs or not... I demand some background and hardrive checks on these teachers!! I mean really, if they did ban the thong, how would they go about enforcing it...thong checks? I think there would be a lawsuit a-comin.
