Most blatant/offensive show unsportsmanship

Recommended Posts

Guest Redhawk

This is inspired by that clip you may have seen of the boxer who knocked the shit out of his opponent who was trying to touch gloves (boxing's version of shaking hands) after the opening bell. Now, I thought there wasn't anything that bad about it, since they tell you "Protect yourself at all times. Come out fighting" during pre-fight instructions, but some people think the punch was unsportsmanlike.

What are some of the worst examples of unsportsmanlike conduct you've seen?

One that stands out was when Karl Malone cracked Isaiah Thomas' head open with a blatant elbow to the face.

Another was the boxer who, after losing a decision, went over and punched his opponent out after the fight ended. It was really bad because all he had on his fists was tape, which is worse than hitting a guy with your gloves on. He ended up getting arrested.

Then you have Roger Clemens throwing a broken bat at Mike Piazza.

And of course, Mike Tyson biting Evander's ear off. Mike's my boy, but that was wrong.

Bill Romanowski spitting in another player's face. I'd rather have someone punch me in the face than spit at me.

Brian Cox walking to the locker room while giving the local fans the finger. I think Cox was a member of the Dolphins at the time.

Off-court: Malone saying he wouldn't play with Magic on the floor with HIV.

On-court: Reggie Miller.

What did Reggie do? And know that I will defend it, since he's my favorite player.

That was the game where Dallas was getting creamed at home like 24-0, and after every touchdown by the oposition, the guy who scored would run to the star in the middle of the field and throw his hands up in triumph.

That continued until a guy scored a touchdown, ran to the middle of the field and was promptly speared by a Dallas linebacker

When he was a Dolphin, he was walking toward the locker room here in Buffalo and he spit into a crowd of fans.

Buffalo fucking hates Brian Cox.

So far all I've seen listed is a bunch of stuff that was highly entertaining and made the games they appeared in much more enjoyable to watch except for the spitting thing.

Actually, Eagan, what happened was that on one quick strike, Terrell Owens scored a touchdown, and then proceeded to take the ball to 5o yard line star. So, everyone booed and hissed, without any physical incident. So, later, which may have actually been the next drive, Emmitt Smith gets in for six, and to right the wrong made by Owens, he runs the ball to the star and sets it down, perhaps saying to Terrell "Not in our house, bitch."

Owens, ever the charismatic showman, scores another, more impressive touchdown. Then he runs out to set it down on the star, and right after he sets it down, he is blindsided and knocked to the turf by a Dallas Cowboys defender, and a little scrum happens in Texas Stadium, and they almost be clubberin'. Quite the interesting fifteen minutes.

Sorry, dude, I just needed to let the story be told more accurately. You still rock hard. :headbang:

For my post, I nominate the dude who suckerpunched Rudy T way back in the day..may he suffer from syphillus and die a horrible death. :firing:

I don't think what Kermit Washington did (punching Rudy T) was so horrible. He was already involved in a fight and Rudy T ran up behind him. If you were in a fight and someone ran up behind you, wouldn't you turn around swinging?

Kermit Washington. It wasn't really a sucker punch. Rudy was running towards him, and Kermit reacted. He's essentially been blackballed from the game since.

Anybody halfway interested in the Rudy/Kermit thing needs to read the book about it called The Punch.

Seen: Easy. Warren Sapp crippling Jerry Rice in 1997 by yanking him down by the face mask. Everything about that play suggests to me, still, that "taking him out" was the goal of that maneuver.

Alomar spitting on an ump wasn't so bad, because it lead to the greatest bit of sports revenge I've ever seen: later that year in the playoffs, in a game and series on the line moment, Alomar is batting, it's a two strike count, and he takes a pitch. It is blatantly outside. Might have hit a batter standing in the opposite batters box. The umpire immediately rings him up on it. Strike 3, Out 3, Game and Series over, Alomar goes home (and his team with him, I think it was Baltimore?)

Heard of: My dad has told me a story several times about a Giants / Dodgers game he went to in the 60's [65, I think] at which something called "The Bat Incident" occured. Giants pitcher Juan Marichal is batting. I believe Drysdale was throwing for the Dodgers on this day. Anyway, the Dodger pitcher throws a pitch aimed at Marichal (head or arm, I'm not sure), and drills him. Marichal's reaction?

He turns around and clubs the Dodger catcher over the head with his bat. ;) Naturally, a bench clearing brawl erupts, and Marichal is eventually suspended.

And that, boys and girls, is part of the reason why Dodgers/Giants is the best rivalry in the history of American sports. (Screw your Yankees/BoSox...if you're not trying to physically maim the other side, you just ain't tryin hard enough... :) )

Though I suppose the most overt shows of unsportsmanlike conduct ought to be the harrassment Jackie Robinson faced in his rookie year. We probably shouldn't put anything ahead of that...

I'll go with the boxer who punched his opponent after losing the fight. With the first boxing incident, after the touch gloves, it was part of the contest, and while it may have been cheap, it was part of the boxing match, and it's also the fault of his opponent who didn't have his guard up at all times. Punching your opponent after losing is just sad, and everyone condemned that guy, and I think he's also been blackballed from boxing.

The Marichal incident reminds me of Izzy Alcantrara. Pitcher throws a wee too close, and Izzy backkicks the catcher and rushes the mound.

I was at that game. The whole crowd was silent, a "what the hell did he just do?" silence for a few seconds before going nuts for the fight.

What's worse, that fight was during an NYPD benefit a few months after 9/11. Almost the entire crowd was made up of cops and I think the boxer got arrested for assault right after he left the ring.

The catcher that Marichal took the bat to was John Roseboro.

And the one the bowled over Terrell Owens was George Teague.

I had a couple of examples, but I realized that there was one high school basketball coach that took the cake. He shall remain nameless, though I doubt anyone has ever heard of him.

When calls went against him one night, he yelled at his boys to quit playing entirely. If they gained possession of the ball in any manner, they were to throw it away or set down on the ground. He was down by a mere eight when he quit in the 4th quarter.

The incident that led to his release from the program several years ago occurred when the school played a super powerful opponent.

Instead of taking his beating like a man (and he was getting thrashed when he started this), he started intentionally fouling in the third quarter. He kept it up until the team of 15 boys was down to four. Ten players fouled out and another was tossed for flagrant fouls. Even with the opposing coach putting in his scrubs and telling his players not to even try to play defense, the team lost by 15. Still, this coach celebrated it as one big victory, proclaiming his plan worked and he barely lost.

Ty Cobb dragging some crippled guy from the stands and beating the hell out of him in 1912.

I think the Bruians where involved in a fight that broke into the stands against both the North Stars and Rangers. One of the Bruians used a guys shoe to beat him up.

Who fuckin care that it lead to a revenge spot. The motherfucker spit in an official's face.

Whatever his punishment was, it should've been doubled.

If spitting in an official's face isn't one of the most blatant show's of unsportsmanship is, then I don't know what is.

The entire Pistons team walking off of the court before the game ended as Chicago defeated them ending Detroit's two year championship streak and starting it's own three year run.

Looking back I am sure Thomas regrets it. It cost him an Olympic gold medal.

If any good came out of the Alomar/Hirshbeck incident it's that Alomar know works closely with Hirshbeck's charity and his son who I believe is autistic.

Christian Laetner in the 92 Regional Final Game, one of the Greatest Games I have seen on tha TelleVision, stomped on a Kentucky player. The refs did not see it, and Laetner hits the game winner at the buzzer. Great games, a very poor showing of composurer and unsportsman like behavoir.

Alomar spitting on the ump was pretty bad too. He should have been supsended "right on the spot". Instead we was suspened the next season.

I kind of remember hearing about this? How did it cost Isaiah a medal? Was he left off of the Dream Team for pissing Jordan off? And didn't Isaiah also lead the "freezing Jordan out at the All-Star Game" movement?

If I remember correctly, that was when Jerry Rice went down with a torn ACL (wasn't it?) and missed the rest of the season after that.

Either way, that sucked.

And, for those of you who were speaking of the Terrell Owens star incident from 2000....

fbfd7de9.jpg

That was easily the greatest thing in Cowboys history. Of course leave it to asswipes like George Teague to come in and take a cheap-shot.

By the way, does the unsportsmanship of the fans count? Because if so, there are PLENTY of examples.

I think it's a tossup between the Alomar spitting incident, Tyson biting off a chunk of Holyfield's ear, and any needless check in hockey which has caused someone to take a header into the boards and become paralyzed. Dale Hunter almost killed Pierre Turgeon doing that shit, and it's only gotten worse.

I read a story once where Jack Lambert was at the bottom of a pile fighting for the ball and damn near bit the other guys finger off to get it although I don't know if that's true.

There was a boxing match sometime in the 80's between 2 pointless fucks where the ref stopped the fight and the guy who lost went after the ref immediately and got one shot in on the side of his head before being taken to the ground.

You can't forget about Bobby Knight's chair throwing incident no to mention choking one of his players.

Warren Sapp blindsiding the GreenBay lineman and puting him out for a substantial period this past year was pretty bad. It was technically ok since the play was still going on but it was on the complete other side of the field and neither man had any involvement in the play so it shouldn't have happened.

As far as fan incidents go, the two guys who attacked the Royals first base coach was pretty bad, and the time when the NY fans threw batteries at,I believe, John Rocker.
