Most blatant/offensive show unsportsmanship

I kind of remember hearing about this? How did it cost Isaiah a medal? Was he left off of the Dream Team for pissing Jordan off? And didn't Isaiah also lead the "freezing Jordan out at the All-Star Game" movement?

After the season Jordan basically said you can pick Isaiah if you want, but I won't play if you do. Of course they picked Jordan, and as a result Christian Laettner now has a gold medal.

As for the All-Star team freeze out, it was Thomas, supposedly, that led it. I am not sure of the situation surrounding it though. Maybe someone else can fill in the details.

Not that it really matters but I thought a college player was always supposed to be on the Dream Team?

and it's only gotten worse.

As it gotten worse? We really don't know most of the incidents that took place before our lifetime.

Warren Sapp blindsiding the GreenBay lineman and puting him out for a substantial period this past year was pretty bad. It was technically ok since the play was still going on but it was on the complete other side of the field and neither man had any involvement in the play so it shouldn't have happened.

Chad Clifton is still ailing from that attack and he has missed mini camp this week with pelvis related injuries stemming from the hit.

It sickens me that Warren Sapp has as many Super Bowl rings as Brett Favre.

Good Ole' Jim McMahon has 2 though, so its all good!

I remember when they said the Dream Team would have a college player, and the top two candidates were Christian Laettner and Chris Webber. I think the only reason they didn't take Webber -- who was obviously a WAY better player -- was because he was only a sophomore at Michigan at the time and Laettner was a senior, so they figured they'd give the senior the shot. And I'm sure they wanted to get as many White guys on there as possible.

Was Alonzo Mourning a Sr? If he was he should of been the choice. Anyone but Laettner.

Shaq could have been on that Dream Team too.

One of the worst I can remember was Matt Johnson sucker punching Jeff Boukeboom. This was a blatant cheapshot to the back of the head, from behind, and it ended Jeff's career.

Another horrid one was Dale Hunter on Pierre Turgeon in the 1993 playoffs. Turgeon scores the game winning goal and as he is celebrating gets slammed by Hunter and is basically done for the rest of the playoffs.

Albert Belle forearming Fernando Vina.

If we're thinking of the same incident, that was actually a legal play. The ball was in play, Vina was standing in the baseline, and the baserunner has a right to run to second base without being obstructed.

Belle still got suspended for it because his name was Albert Belle, and the hit may have been a bit rough, but if following a rule is unsportsmanlike, doesn't that make the rule unsportsmanlike?

Surely Tonya Harding getting someone to take out Nancy Kerrigan with a lead pipe should get a mention!

Meh. Someone would've remembered sooner or later.

It's not because Karma turned around and bit Harding hard in the ass afterwards (the pathetic Olympic performance, becoming the BUTT of jokes across the country, having her wedding night video go public)

I just thought about the time when Nolan Ryan kicked Robin Ventura's ass and it made me laugh so I figured I would post that.

BEST BRAWL EVER. Don't fuck with the old guard.

Anytime a baseball manager just goes insane on an umpire. We all thought it was funny up here in Seattle when Lou Piniella did it, but think about it: What's the point? Has an umpire ever changed a call after getting yelled at by a manager? And what is kicking dirt over home plate do, or taking a base? To me it seems like the manager is just trying to make the umpire look bad, which is pretty unsportsmanlike.

I don't think Ventura put up a fight once he realized he was charging Nolan Ryan.

Best Brawl is San Diego vs Atlanta back in 1985.

Does it have to be an athlete? If not, I nominate the Philly fans who cheered Michael Irvin getting carted off the field after a career-ending (and possibly paralyzing) neck injury.

In his only season as a Yankee, ('95?) Jack McDowell was coming out of a game, was heavily booed, and gave Yankee Stadium the finger.

In either the '98 or '96 season, the Yankees were playing Baltimore at home, down in the late innings. Bernie Williams hit a go ahead HR off of Armondo Benitez, and the next pitch he drills Tino Martinez in the back, which injured him for at least 6 weeks and it took quite a while to regain his swing. This promted Darryl Strawberry to dart from the dugout, starting a benches clearing brawl, where Strawberry, Graeme Lloyd, and I believe Mike Stanton were all suspended for going after Benitez with punches, as well as Benitez himself.

Or when Clemens was sick of being bitched by Piazza and drilled him in the head, which made him miss the All-Star Game and from then on Piazza became the forever bitch till he fought back at Mota this year but it was already too late.

And I heard that the Padres paid off Dave Winfield to wear their cap into the Hall of Fame so that Tony Gwynn couldn't have the distinction of being their first HoF'er because the two sides were having some kind of fight, and now the players aren't allowed to choose thier cap anymore.

Laettner only got picked to the Dream Team because he went to Duke. Shaq, Zo, and Calbert Cheaney were all far better collegiate players.

The Padres did pay Winfield. They also gave him some phoney executive title with the team.

[McEnroe]You CANNOT be serious.[/McEnroe]

Laettner is probably one of the ten best collegiate players of all time. He put up all the impressive stats the other guys did (even more impressive considering Duke was loaded for most of the time he was there, so he was never the sole focus of the offence), and made four Final Fours and won two rings.

Hate him if you must, but don't say he wasn't a legendary college player.

I don't think it has to be an athlete, and besides, I brought that up earlier damn you. :P

I do agree with the choice you nominated, as well. That was rather harsh of them to cheer the injury like that.

I also have a few others of my own, that are fan related.

-- The Cleveland bottle throwing incident from 2001, I believe.

-- The New Orleans bottle throwing incident from their MNF game against the Rams, the same year.

-- New York Giants fans throw snowballs at the San Diego Chargers during a game. (Circa mid-1990s?)

Bowe/Golota series.

I know it's funny as hell to remember these days, but damn... Was Golota really THAT stupid?

Heh, the revenge shot(good ol' Paul E. cell phone to the head) made up for it, though.

Was Golota really THAT stupid?

Yes, yes he was. One of the more 'talented' heavy weights of the last 25 years(and white, highly marketable in boxing). He blew EVERY big opportunity he got with his stupidity - both Bowe fights, and vs. Lewis, Grant, and Tyson. Truly pathetic.

How about when Minnesota fans threw garbage at Chuck Knoblauch while he was playing LF for the Yanks?

Has an umpire ever changed a call after getting yelled at by a manager? And what is kicking dirt over home plate do, or taking a base?

An amusing anecdote about that...

Back when Earl Weaver was still managing the Orioles, he had managed to earn one of his near-100 ejections. He tried to kick dirt on home plate to accentuate the point, but the ground was wet, and there was no dirt to be kicked. Not to be outdone by the weather, Earl bent down, picked up a few handfuls of dirt, and tossed them onto home plate.

It was tremendous.

And a Piniella story, since I think you mentioned him. This is back when Lou was still a player. He was at bat, with Steve Palermo (whose career was tragically cut short by a gunshot wound) as the home-plate umpire. Palermo rang Piniella up on a pitch Piniella didn't think was a strike. The exchange went like this...

Piniella: Where the hell was that one at?

Palermo: Don't end a sentence with a preposition.

Piniella: OK, where was that one at, you asshole?

Again, tremendous. Baseball needs colorful figures like Weaver and Piniella.

Don Sutton calling the cops on John Canderlia who was arrested for driving drunk. This because Sutton lost his spot in the rotation to him.
