Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted June 9, 2003 Just heard on SportsCenter the new Charlotte franchise will be called the Bobcats. It's a play on owner Robert Johnson's name.

Guest Bannable Offense Report post Posted June 9, 2003 Is it just me, but does that seem to be a rather feminine team nickname? The first thing I thought of when I heard Bobcats... ...a WNBA team.
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted June 9, 2003 Bobcats sounds like a name better suited for minor league baseball. Dragon merchandise would have been a hot seller.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted June 9, 2003 Charlotte Dragons sounds something that Disney would have done.
Guest The Grand Pubah of 1620 Report post Posted June 9, 2003 It sounds like a high school team to me. With a name like that they are sure to fail.

Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Bobcats are similar to Panthers aren't they? Carolina Panthers Charlotte Bobcats I still liked the Spiders for the whole play on Charlotte's Web..
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted June 10, 2003 That it is. The choice doesn't suprise me. Johnson said Bobcats was his personal choice and he had the final say. The logo will be revealed Wednesday if anyone cares.
Conspiracy_Victim 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Well, I heard the primary color was orange. An orange team named the "Bobcats". Well, now I don't feel so bad about the Rockets PJ's look uniforms (even though their supposed to be gone for next season anyhow).
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted June 10, 2003 This thought occured to me.. The Cleveland Browns were named so after their first Coach/GM Paul Brown. And while its true that he didn't come up with the name himself, he did pick it from a list of submitted ideas (only after getting rejected on his first choice of Panthers), just like in this case here with the Bobcats. No one had a problem with the name Browns, and if you think about it, at least Bobcats are actually something. All the name Browns really is is the owners name with an S at the end, and it really isn't anything tangible per se, although its become associated with the Dawg Pound/dogs. BTW, me being a Ravens fan, I really don't want to draw the ire of any Browns fans..although I know how some Browns fans can get the minute a Ravens fan says a word about anything involving the Browns/football. and while the thought crossed my mind (3rd edit in a couple seconds), I'd just like to point out that the 2 pro teams that play in Baltimore, were ironically enough named the Browns before they moved to Baltimore (St. Louis Browns = Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Browns = Baltimore Ravens)
Guest MD2020 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Is it just me, but does that seem to be a rather feminine team nickname? Yeah, but at least they have a cool animal. Us poor suffering baseball fans in Philly, however...

If you don't like the Phanatic turn in your Philly card right now.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Bobcats isn't a bad name, it just sounds strange at first. All names sound better after they've been established and have jerseys an merchandise with the name. No, the name bobcat really isn't feminine. It's a vicious wild animal that can rip your flesh off....how's that feminine. Do you think the name Tigers is feminine too just because it's a cat?

If you don't like the Phanatic turn in your Philly card right now. The name. Who doesn't love the Phanatic? Especially when he has the power to have a no-hitter thrown on his birthday. But the name...we share the same phonetic name as female horses. Could be worse though. We could be the Shelbyville Shelbyvillians.
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Could be worse though. We could be the Shelbyville Shelbyvillians. I've actually named every fantasy sports team that I've ever created "The Springfield Isotopes" except for the one year that my roommate stole my team name in a league we joined together. So, what did I name my team then ... ... the "Shelbyville Shelbyvillians".
Guest HHH123007 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 I don't mind them naming the franchise "Bobcats"..... I just hate the fact that they picked horrible colors.....Orange, black, and silver?
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted June 10, 2003 I just hate the fact that they picked horrible colors.....Orange, black, and silver? I may actually like that depending on how they use these colours and if it's a good shade of orange. There's nothing wrong with halloween colours when used correctly. Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted June 10, 2003 They should've jsut done a 3-way name trade so we'd have Charlotte Hornets, New Orleans Jazz, and... the Utah Firing Squad. Their logo would be a row of executioners shooting basketballs.
