A college student makes a program that will search his university's network for files, and guess who's got a complaint about that?

But Jordan did agree to pony up $12,000, his entire savings account, to the RIAA. Jordan and his father, Andy Jordan, felt the settlement was their best option.

"They agreed to allow Jesse to deny their allegations. They agreed to dismiss the case and all allegations against him," Andy said. "Basically they agreed that he didn't do anything wrong, but [they're] taking his 12 grand."

Where does this end?!?

It's too bad he didn't refuse and fight them. He could have probably gotten the necessary legal support from the Electronic Frontier Foundation or some similar group. I wonder if the RIAA will try to sue Google next, or the creators of mIRC. This insanity must be stopped somewhere.

For a guy who created a file sharing program his Fight The Power quotient is dangerously low. Maybe his dad made him do it.

ps - RIAA is teh ghey

Poor RIAA, no one is buying albums anymore. There only savior has been Eminem.

Just wait till people start downloading movies more often, a lot more shit will happen with that.

Or just wait 'till more people start buying pirated DVDS! ;)

It ends when we make the RIAA submit!

A billion dollar industry taking 12,000 dollars from a kid and they think it is right. ASSHOLES.

Good for them. Technically it is illegal so fuck that kid. He got caught. You take the risk... you take the punishment.

Hell I wouldn't shed a tear if Dames, Tom or anyone here got got caught and it wiped them out.

Stealing is stealing even if the prices on CD are outrageous (which I agree with).

If I got caught I would own up to it like man and not a pussy.

except what he did was not illegal. That's like suing AOL because people used their software to sign on and get the music or sueing Google for offering a search engine.

As the article says, the program was used to search the network for items already there and was used for various things...and some people used it to download music.

I refuse to believe they were losing millions of dollars due to this and it is absolutely ridiculous.

WHAT. IN. THE. FUCK.

He didn't steal music files!

There's no proof anyone used this tool to steal music files over the network! He just made a tool that could be possibly used for such a purpose and they harassed him away.

Look here:

"I didn't tell people what to share. I never promoted piracy," Jordan said.

"They agreed to allow Jesse to deny their allegations. They agreed to dismiss the case and all allegations against him," the father said.  "Basically they agreed that he didn't do anything wrong, but [they're] taking his 12 grand."

Come on, man. This is like suing a rifle company because it's gun was used in a crime. If you're going to go after the little guy, at least go after the guy who's doing the trading.

Surely you're just misinformed with your statement, or else we should go after the creators of the HTTP and FTP protocol too?

As someone who used and abused that SAME NETWORK, I can say 100% that the kid did nothing wrong. All his program does is allow you to sort through the network and find what you want quickly. It's not just music files...its EVERYTHING that people shared!

That really isn't right...considering that RPI costs 35,000 a year.

Oh yeah, plenty of places charge that much. Vanderbilt costs around $30K per year. And when I was accepted there (with a 34 ACT, 1490 SAT, and 3.8-ish GPA) they offered me a grand total of $2000 for scholarship money... in the form of a loan. Needless to say, I didn't end up going there.

This is the RIAA's stretegy. They cannot go after the people who create the software since they got smart enough to originate it from outside the US, and they have to go ater SOMEONE, so they are going to go after the little people who don't have the resources or the courage to stand up and tell them to piss off.

A good number of artists don't care or even support file sharing as it promotes their music and makes it more likely that the people will see them in concert, which is where most artist make a good portion of their *real* money.... but with some other artists, too much money is never enough...

I read the Metallica article in USA Today the did around the St. Anger album, and in it Lars was spewing some crap about how he doesn;t have a problem with the sharing of his music, but he wants to control what is put out there. Good luck.

It's like Sting (the musical artist) said about the issue: You can't put the genie back in the bottle.

I weight 185 now...and I STILL don't look it. I don't look fat at all actually, but I'm not happy with my body.

Damn, I sound like a total girl.

And the RIAA wonders why their incessant cries/whiny bitching about file sharing is falling on deaf ears. It is bullshit like this that only pisses people off and makes them crank up Kazaa or WinMX or whatever program and download to their hearts' content. Like I am about to do right now...

*double-clicks 'WinMX' icon on his desktop*

I go to RPI too, and the food does suck as it is very repetitive, thank God for Goombas.

Tuition actually didn't go up this year so I think it's still at 38 and change, but it is an awesome engineering school which should make it worth it in the end.

And as a user of said network, it really helped with old homework assignments. And songs of course, but I alwyas heard that there were other ways to search the network anyway using the actual Windows Search. So all they were doing were facilitating net traffic.

eh, don't sweat it Dames, I weigh about 210 and everyone around me thinks I am a skinny beanpole.

I'm actually 230 but also 6'5" which works to my adavntage. I got a bit of a gut but beyond that I look skinny to the eye
