Who is the most overrated wrestler of all time?

Recommended Posts

Guest Monday Night Jericho

Well the title says it all.

My vote goes with Kurt Angle.

No competetion: Steve Austin.

I'd say Austin is underrated actually.

Overrated?

Kurt Angle.

If you look more closely at his matches, you'll begin to notice his flaws. Doesn't deserve the "best in the world" and "best technical wrestler ever" comments.

He's still good, and better than a lot of WWE wrestlers....but overrated.

Shawn Michaels.

Austin is indeed underrated.

I would agree that Angle is overrated.

Austin is underrated for his wrestling skills. He's better than Michaels and Angle. Michaels was a great athlete and sold well. Angle is a great athlete, has a great background, and sells perfectly, but his flaws are in his psychology.

Most overrated ever? Sting.

How is Austin underrated? I still don't understand the big deal about Austin's matches, especially after his neck was screwed up. It is just punch, punch, kick, kick, stunner. His selling is fine, and his psycology is fine. But his moveset isn't anything to write home about. I'm sorry, but all those matches with Rock were not ****. I don't hate his matches, but they aren't that great.

North America: Benoit.

Japan: I've never really heard of Mutoh/Muta being overrated (blasted more like it), but I'd have to throw Yuji Nagata in there. The guy is good, but not as good as he should be.

about his selling: if by "fine" you mean "great," then yes, his selling is fine.

about his psychology: if by "fine" you mean "one of the best in north america," then yes, his psychology is fine.

if by "his matches" you mean "summerslam 2001, raw is quad, his 2 tv matches with chris benoit, the hollywood blondes matches with the horsemen or ricky steamboat, and ALL his matches with bret hart," and if by "aren't that great" you mean "are incredible," then yes, his matches aren't that great.

austin is god. you are nothing.

Austin was a good "wrestler" and then after his injury he was able to turn into an even better "brawler".

Throw in promo's and drawing ability and this guy was the absolute total package.

add the fact that Austin has provided The Rock, Kurt Angle, Val Venis, Savio Vega, Bret Hart, Mick Foley, Shane Douglas, Shawn Michaels, Owen Hart, Brian Pillman and Triple H with matches that would comfortably make their top fives (in some cases more than once) then you should be able to see how truly great Austin was

I'll go with Michaels, he was great but not quite the god the IWC puts him over as

My $0.02

RVD

Maybe 'cause I never saw his ECW days, BUT... then Its not my fault, a great wrestler must be great always, right now, it bores me.

On one hand you're not wrong...

since anyone who rates RVD remotely well is overrating him.

But no one really rates him high at all...because even his most ardent fans (like me) know he's a shitty worker.

The quality of a match is always debatable, so just because you think his matches are incredible, doesn't mean that I will. I liked his matches pre-surgery (so the Bret ones you mentioned and the horsemen/steamboat ones), but I couldn't really get into many of his matches after it. Oh, and your last comment was real mature.

AKIRA TAUE

I know I'm going to take flack for this but his singles work, other than a couple of matches with Misawa that were GOOD and thats all, sucks badly.

I'll give him credit that he's a good tag wrestler but it's only because the other three people in the ring are usually Kawada,Misawa,Kobashi,Tsuruta,4 of the best wrestlers ever, or Akiyama who I always thought was really solid.

And although those matches are solid they tend to be overrated a lot.

Thanx BPS, and about Booker...

Agreed.

Thats another one that makes me say "why all the buzz for this guy?"

Again, I didnt saw his WCW work, but being honest, can you tell me when he got his last **** match? Right now, I dont remember one in the whole WWF/E time.

I know snowflakes are not the same for x and y but still want to know.

Get the facts straight buddy.

Taue was not being carried from around mid 95 and 97. You should watch 9/95 agaisnt Misawa a bit more closely and pay attention as to who is calling most of the shots, and who's type of match it is. The 95 Carnie Match was Misawa match, but 9/95 was a Taue match and it is arguably better. Plus, those matches are little more than good, they are fucking flawless masterpeices and are actually faster and more grueling than the overrated Kobashi matches, not to mention the selling is light years better. Have you actually even seen the matches?

Plus, he has matches without Misawa, that do not suck badly. He had two great matches with Kawada(both of which were not carry jobs by any fucking stretch of the imagination). He carried Kobashi's goofy ass to a good match in the 95 Carnies(doing his best to keep him under control). A year later Kobashi would have more of a say in the match, and the result was a goofy spot a thon though Taue is partially to blame as well. And the in following year, he carried a doped up Steven Williams to a great Main Event match, better than those bull shit overhyped matches that Kobashi had with Williams.

I also don't think his early work was that bad either. He knew he wasn't at the level of a Misawa or Kawada, but he accpeted that, played his role, and allowed himself to be carried. Speaking of which he had a shit load of good matches through out most of the early 90s, where he picked his spots well and let the smarter guys dictate control.

Kawada easily. He's not bad but for the amount of press he gets he's definitely overrated. Those kicks to the face when he holds his opponent by the face are kayfabe breaking along with the "pull opponent up by the arm and chop him back down" manuever he likes to do. He also doesn't try as hard at house shows and the only reason people go gaga over his bouts is because they're stiff. If he had to pull his blows back the same people proclaiming him the best would be crying about how much he sucks.

I'm also going with Austin. As with Kawada kicks his punches after his "Lou Thez press" are big time kayfabe breakers. He also relies too much on the punches in his matches. Don't get me wrong, Austin's not bad but if he was as good as people say he is than he'd be able to bring better bouts out of people like the Undertapper and Helmsley. Before anyone says it the 2/3 falls match with HHH sucked along with their previous Survivor Series? match. Austin's last match against the Undertapper on Smackdown wasn't bad but their last match on PPV was hideously horrable. Like I said Austin's not bad and he's actually good but he is definitely overrated.

"Kayfabe breaking" Lou Thesz press? What about those indy guys like AJ Styles who run through their ridiculous movesets? Surely that would be more kayfabe breaking.

Austin is overrated because he can't carry Taker to anything more than decent? For carrying Taker to a decent match he deserves a fuggin medal, IMO.

Austin is semi-overrated. I find his problem involves motivation. When Austin is on, he's on but he'll need to be getting something out of the match. When Austin has nothing to gain from a match (see vs Jericho at No Way Out 2002 and vs Scott Hall from Mania 2002) he dogs it and the match suffers.

My most overrated of all time pick is Ric Flair, though Kurt Angle is slowly climbing the list.

Agreed. Austin has gone through spurts like in 98-99 and 2002 were he couldn't have a passable match to save his life. But when he has something to prove like in 96-97 and 2001, he was the best WWF wrestler ever. He was amazing in those periods, a joy to watch.

I'll nominate the British Bulldog. He was good, but everyone has made him out to be great. He was the weak link on every team he was on. I loved his tag team with Owen though. Great great stuff.
