A mix of ELO's melancholy, lofty pop and Yes' overlong keyboard noodling that makes them kind of bland and full of themselves. I'll go with an album, Rolling Stones' Some Girls. Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted June 13, 2003 I don't know Rush well, but I wanted to weigh in on the Moody Blues. They are the terrifying soundtrack of my childhood. For some reason, my dad's side of the family was really big into their live album from Red Rocks when that came out in the early 90's. We somehow ended up with two different copies of it, which meant there was basically one within listening distance no matter where you were in the house. This was like being stuck in a Russian gulag circa the early 20th century, except the soundtrack was "I know you're out there somewhere, in my wiiii-yiiii-iiiiildest dreams" instead of "Stay in your lines or we'll shoot you." I remember seeing that when the compilation album came out and not really understanding why they'd bother to include it if they were going to cut it down. The very notion of a Floyd compilation album is kinda weird to me, because there's really no way to summarize a band whose output was so, so different across its career in two discs. I would like to say, before I start, that this is purely subjective, so don't flame me. Please? The album has never grtabbed me in the way that most Floyd albums have. It comes across as a poor mans Dark Side in many ways. I appreciate that it was just before DSOTM, and it's not fair to compare it to that album, but at the same time it just sounds like theres something missing. The instrumentals suck in my opinion, and the whole thing doesn't seem to flow the way that the other albums do, maybe because its a soundtrack. Then again I'm not a massive fan of Dark Side either, so maybe thats why. Having said that, I've heard some people speak highly of it, and if someone can convince me of it's benefits I'd be more than willing to give it another chance. Great guitar riffs, great structure, powerful/fun lyrics that make you want to shout along. The song just has incredible energy. It's a lot like "Born in the USA" where you kind of get lost in the groove and don't listen to the words. However, I think the message of the song is a little over simple and childish in the presentation. "I fight authority, authority always wins." Pretty cut and dried. FOr some reason when this album came out I never found it to be that good although I have been hearing it a lot lately and I have to say it's fucking AWESOME. This album alone makes them one of my 15 fav. bands. Rooster is one of the better songs I've ever heard. This is probably the best album from that time period although I am partial to Nirvana. Rock & Roll Professionals is my favourite track, and the new drummer seems pretty good, though I'm not sure whether he's better than the previous one. And if by good musicianship, you mean overblown "epic yet dark and spooky" textures, mixed with cheeseball masturbatory solos, and an ever-galloping drummer, you've hit the nail on the head. You're probably referring to their first singer and drummer, but their 2000 release 'The Dark Ride' is a really good album (power metal standards). BUT, every member in the band hated making it for some reason (perhaps it was because it wasn't "happy happy haloween' enough), and the ones who didn't, were fired. Anyway, I would recommend taking a look at the album if you have no problems with power metal.....especially the title track, if i could fly and the departed. Out on the tiles: One of the rockers from III, and a pretty good one. Has a nice riff and a good bass beat. Also appears to be a straight out love song. May I just first say that I love, admire, wish to stalk, respect, and frankly am a little attracted to this man. ahem, anyway. I'm going to answer the pink floyd song by making a fairly general statement about their songs. I find them to be good for background sounds. Nothing that really grabs, nor can I ignore it.
