Scarface: 20th Anniversary

Recommended Posts

Hello all. Now, I'm not 100% sure on this, but a pretty good number of DVD sites are saying that in mid-late September they will re-release Scarface in special edition format with new audio and visual transfers. I think I speak for all of us (especially Dames) when I say; THANK GOD! I have the OOP version and the audio is really bad, and the special features leave alittle to be desired. Here's hoping they will have De Palma/Stone commentary track.

Now, only if they did this for Casino & Goodfellas, I'd be all set.

Goodfellas....eh, maybe. It's close. But Casino? Hell no. Scarface is yards better.

Yards? How about centimetres?

I don't think so. Scarface really didn't have a story. All it had was rampant violence, a cheap Cuban accent, and a bunch of catchphrases. That said, I like the movie for what it is. But Casino, though having similarities to Goodfellas, had a better overall story. It was believable. Montana? C'mon, the dude was a pansy.

IMO, Scarface is a tiny bit better than Goodfellas, followed closely by Casino. Casino is lowest because (let's face it) it was just a cheap re-hash of Goodfellas. A good kind of re-hash though :hm: . That aside, I totally second coming out with a SE of Scorsese's two. The flipper disc on my Goodfellas sucks major ass.

Guy comes from Cuba, tries the "straight and narrow" thing, gets sucked in by the lure of the fast life, gets involved in that life, slowly takes over Miami, has it all come crashing down due to his own faults. Yeah, no story there whatsoever.

Anyway, you can say a LOT of bad things about Tony Montana. A lot. But one thing he's not is a pansy.

Goodfellas does indeed own Scarface. Nothing against Scarface but Goodfellas is one of the best Gangster movies ever bar none. Now Scarface no doubt would crack the top ten...

Let's see (in no particular order and I know there are 12):

Godfather

Godfather Pt 2

Godfather Pt 3

Goodfellas

Millers Crossing

Once Upon A Time in America

Scarface

Untouchables

Donnie Brasco

Casino

Carlito's Way (if considered a gangster movie)

Road to Perdition (if considered a gangster movie)

Forget what else there is.

So yeah. Goodfella's top three, Scarface around 6ish tops.

On a side note, both Once Upon a Time... and Millers Crossing have recently received releases on DVD. Pick those up biotch!

Ok, ok, ok. Now While you aren't going to find a bigger Godfather fan than me (i'm even on a GF message board) Godfather Part III is nowhere near the top of the list of great gangster movies. One, it's not really as much about the mob as the first two. It's about Michael Corleone's ultimate tragedy. Really, the only mob influence in the movie is Joey Zasa (Joe Montegna's character) and the fact that Vincent Mancini (Any Garcia) is weasaling his way into a position of power. Nut all in all, it's a story about Michael.

Also, The Untouchables is not really a gangster movie in the classic sense of the word. It's more of a police epic and this is apparent in the score and the main characters. Heck, DeNiro is in the movie for all of 15 minutes. If you really want to make a list of top gangster movies, look no further to the early James Cagney movies, and Little Caesar.

Oh yeah, the movie Scarface with Pacino is actually a remake of a prohibition era gangster movie called Scarface: Shame of the Nation. Just a little info for all you Scarface marks like myself.

Yeah, I knew Scarface was a remake.

I wasn't really getting into older movies. These are all more modern day.

So is Donnie Brasco a gangster movie? Or is it an undercover cop movie?

Movies with prime gangster elements, no matter on what side of the fence or where they rank in hierarchy are on this list.

And Godfather 3 isn't as bad as people give it credit for being. Compared to Godfather and GF Pt. II it doesn't hold a tee, but I wouldn't call it a bad movie and it at least merits consideration into comparison with some of the lower ranked movies on this list.

And Bugsy's another potential one you could add to the list (personally I didn't like it, although Ben Kingsley is perfectly cast as Meyer Lansky). I also didn't mind the movie Hoodlum (although other people loathed it) if for nothing else than Tim Roth's awesome Dutch Schultz portrayal.

Anyways, I made that list to establish that Scarface isn't top 5 material in my opinion as it is behind Goodfellas, GF and GF II, Once Upon a Time..., and Millers Crossing.

Scarface is not that great of a "movie" as it is just a bunch of quotable catchphrases strung together. It is too long, and basically is pretty pointless...but DAMNIT I love it. It is basically like todays acton movies. All flash and no substance, but the flash in this film is incredible. I will buy it, but in no way is it a better FILM than Casino.

It might not be a better film than Casino but Scarface is a more entertaining film.

And for me, entertainment is really the bottom line.
