Cruiserweight Question

Recommended Posts

Guest jm29195

I was thinking about which US cruiserweight has had the best career and whilst running throught the usual options it struck me that of all people statisticall Sean Waltman has probably done the best for himself- I know he isn't up to much at the moment but he has in the past been in ppv main events, held a promotion's secondary title (US in wcw), been a multiple tag team champion in the wwf, been in high profile feuds ie with and against Kane in 99, Flair in 97 and Ramon in 95 and been a prominent member and merchandise seller in 2 revolutionary factions (DX and nWo) I know everyone hates him now but I reckon he's easilly had the most high profile career of any cruiserweight (excepitng maybe Jericho if anyone classes him as a cruiser post wcw?) in the US

Any thoughts on other possible contenders?

Actually, I would say AJ Styles. Not many cruiserweights hold world titles.

Yeha but the NWA title isn't much more than an independent title at this point with a very limited audience and I doubt that AJ has had anywhere near as much merchandise sold as Waltman, I'm sure with say the wwe marketing machine behind him AJ could achieve that level, but at the moment in my opinion just because AJ as been TNA champ for one week doesn't make him the most succsesful US cruiserweight ever, when all ofthe other factors are taken into account

Also held the European, Hardcore, Light Heavyweight, Tag Team, and Intercontinental titles in the WWF/WWE.

Sean Waltman is the most successful US cruiser ever, based on the sheer amount of high-profile titles won.

Chris Jericho > Sean Waltman

Jericho did beat Syxx for the WCW Cruiserweight title

Actually, the NWA title was represented all around the world before NWA-TNA took it over. So thats one MIGHTY big independent league world title.

Syxx never held the WCW U.S Title to my knowledge, but i personally don't care for WCW.

Chris Jericho gets my vote.

Waltman only sold merchandise in OVER stables. In his singles merchandise record, he has none I don't think.

What about Benoit? He was never pushed as a cruiserweight contender in WCW but he did make it to the finals of the title tournament in 96.

Yes he did. As Syxx in WCW he did.

NO. He never.

that's right he never did. you may be thinking about the feud Syxx had with Dean Malenko, who WAS US champ at the time, where Syxx stole the belt, and they had a ladder match for it at the first Souled Out ppv, i believe. but this is merely specualtion.

Chris Jericho has held about every belt he could've in the WWF.

He's also held about every single WCW title, if I recall correctly. Some of those were AFTER the InVasion though, if that changes anything.

X-Pac never won the WCW belt, or the WWF belt, let alone both at the same time, nor did he ever beat Rock and Austin in one night.

Jericho wins.

Jericho is a good candidate(No, not every WCW title). The Ayatollah of Rock n' Rolla (A title stolen from the movie "The Road Warrior". Watch it if u haven't seen it already. Mad Max flicks kick ass.) has held the following titles:

WWE Champion (held once, unofficially held and stripped of it once after 15 minutes); WCW Champion (2) (Two previous titles unified to form Undisputed); Intercontinental Champion (4); European Champion; Hardcore Champion (Lost same night); WWE World Tag Team Champion (2); WCW TV Champion; WCW Cruiserweight Champion

But, I would have to go with HBK:

WWE Champion (3); Intercontinental Champion (3); European Champion; WWE World Tag Team Champion (3); 1995 and 1996 Royal Rumble winner

HBK (borderline at 225 pounds to Jericho's 231) is famous for holding all of the titles the WWF had to offer at the time. There was no cruiserweight division. And, due to injury, Michales had to cut his career short. Had it not been for this, he would have been even more successful.

X-Pac did steal a belt from Malenko but it was the Cruiser title. Malenko won the U.S. title from Eddie Guerrero a month after he lost the Cruiser to X-Pac. The ladder match was with Eddie.

And Waltman has also been TNA X division champ-

However I think iI hve changed my view, Jericho hads been the most succeful cruiserweight in that he has altered people's perspectives of him so they no longer see him as a cruiser and accept him as a genuine heavyweight main event level performer- he has shaken the cruiser image despite in reality still being one
