Guest DrTom Report post Posted June 23, 2003 Christ on a cracker, some of you people are bloody thick. IT'S A FUCKING JOKE Things like, "It is wrong to be French" are so blatantly over the top that you'd have to be a halfwit to NOT see that it's intended as a joke. Of course, that readily explains why so many people here seem not to get it.
Guest cobainwasmurdered Report post Posted June 23, 2003 I think there's more to it than the one joke Tom. And most people DO realize it's a joke, even if it was in bad taste (which it was). There really does seem to be an attitude from some people in Current Events that is very anti-french and not just the French Government. I myself am opposed to many aspects of the current American Government but you don't see my saying that "it's wrong to be a Yank" or anything like that. Nor is Current Events the appropriate place to voice your prejudices either, it's for serious argument not for childish hatred of other cultures.

Of course, that readily explains why so many people here seem not to get it. Reading through the thread it would appear quite obvious to any old 'halfwit' that nearly everyone was either mocking a very lame attempt at humour (they KNEW it was a 'joke': Get it?) or quite rightly attacking the ugly prejudice which inspires such a statement in the first place. What was your point again? Nice cheapshot at the end there though, don't forget to give yourself a pat on the back.

Guest DrTom Report post Posted June 24, 2003 or quite rightly attacking the ugly prejudice which inspires such a statement in the first place. What was your point again? That it's a joke and always has been. "Ugly prejudice?" It became fashionable to poke fun at the French when Monty Python did it in the 1970s. There's no prejudice there. If this is such an "ugly prejudice" and some bigoted epidemic, wouldn't the French be complaining about it? They're doing things like booing American athletes, which is certainly their right, but I don't hear them carping about jokes that have managed to survive for thirty years. Yet everyone is offended by proxy on behalf of people who don't seem to give a shit. Hell, people who told "Polock jokes" in elementary school might still laugh if they heard one today. Is that because of an "ugly prejudice" against Poles? Does every comedian have an "ugly prejudice" against everyone he lampoons? Nice weepy melodrama there. Don't forget to give yourself a pat on the back.
Guest JMA Report post Posted June 24, 2003 Big deal. They've been poked fun at so many ways. They're probably angry and want some vengence. I can't really blame them for that.

Guest Cancer Marney Report post Posted June 24, 2003 Amusingly, at least two of the people who've taken up this latest crusade on behalf of oppressed, downtrodden Frenchmen everywhere have a long-established hatred of me, as personal as it is absurd and funny. Does that qualify as an "ugly prejudice?" Where are my self-declared knights in shining armour? Seriously, you morons need to get a grip. The French are ridiculous, and nothing you can say will ever change that. The only thing you're accomplishing is making yourselves look almost as silly. They still look sillier, of course. After all, they're... French.

The men have thin moustaches, and the women don't shave their armpits... and they all say "zee" a lot. There's your proof. While stereotyping people can be very funny (and usually is) I don't really take them seriously. After all, is every Irish person an alcoholic who likes to fight? Does every British citizen have bad teeth? Is every American a redneck who likes twangy country music? I know when you say "French" you are sometimes referring to elitist European snobs who look down on us, but I don't think we should do the same thing. Just because someone generalizes America and Americans doesn't mean we should do the same thing. If someone said "I hate Americans because they're all uneducated baboons with no class," they would be wrong and generalizing every American. It would thus be wrong to say "I hate the French because they're chess eating surrender monkeys," they'd be making a moronic statement as well. No matter which country says it, xenophobia and nationalism are wrong. I hope one day we will live in a world without flag burning or hurtful insults. But that's probably just a dream. So, whatever. I realized I got a little carried away there, but please bear with me.
Guest Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye Report post Posted June 24, 2003 BREAKING NEWS!!!! The French people have had a look at what many experts are calling "Ze finale ztraw" with regards to their nation and citizens being lampooned. After viewing this latest verbal attack, the French people have ralllied to take up arms against what they believe to be a multinational invasion force. "I don't know about ze rezt of ze French people, but zose guyz look awful tough" Said one especially angry French vineyard owner. "Zose guyz zink dey are zooooo great makeeng fun ov uz like dis. But vat are you gonna do?" Said another citizen who laid down his pitchfork soon after and ran back into his house. All of this adds up to one thing. The French mean business and it's time for the rest of the world to stand up and be accountable for their horrible treatment of the French people. Relax guys, if people hate the French that's their business, and their burden to carry. For the rest it's just a joke. +1 This post was about a bunch of smelly cowards, posted on a board frequented by a bunch of self righteous bully yanks, by an igloo living, doughnut dunking lumberjack. I'm very sleepy so any unfunnyness, falsehood, retardation and other negative afflictions plaguing this post are simply due to a lack of sleep. Honest. I love you. Carry on. Guest The Metal Maniac Report post Posted June 24, 2003 I don't hate French people, for the most part. I DO, however, hate the french language (Bad experience with French classes - I mean, if we start with the basic assumption that I DON'T KNOW FRENCH, then how in the fuck is explaining how to speak French IN French supposed to help?) and most of Quebec (Mainly because I find Quebecers to be hypocritical (They want us to be Bi-lingual, when they're not?) and they're ASSHOLES on the road). I also get a great deal of pleasure from making jokes about the sheer BRILLIANCE of military strategy that was the Maginot Line. I mean, when your entire battle plan hinges on the enemy being dumb enough to not WALK AROUND YOUR DEFENSES, you're just ASKING for it. Oh, and for the record, I learned in my War & Society class that being biased against French people is nothing new. Way back in the day (Probably around the 1700's - I forget exactly what era we were discussing at the time) if you did something really, REALLY dumb and got killed because of it (Like having a picnic outside the castle during a SIEGE) then it was said that you got killed...in the French way. So whether they're getting themselves killed by being idiots, or giving up the war before the enemy has a chance to kill any of them, they're STILL the BUTT of jokes. And that's what they are. JOKES. (No, not the french. The jokes are jokes.)

Actually, that the French are cheese-eating surrender monkeys is a historical fact. Q. How many gears are there in a French tank? A. Six. Five to reverse, and one to go forwards. Q. What? When do French tanks go forwards? A. When the enemy attacks from the rear.
Guest George Dawes Report post Posted June 24, 2003 I believe depending on where you come from you will have dfiferent opinions on people anyway. It all depends on history thats why alot of people hate or are prejudice. Look at the English and Germans, they hate each other because of the war and now its all over the Football. Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted June 24, 2003 While I don't hate the French per se, I do feel that they tend to have a "holier-than-thou, our-shit-don't-stink" attitude, and tend to view themselves as being better than those who aren't French. (and yes, I do know that a lot of Americans have this same mentality ... and I shit on the Americans for thinking that way, too) And about Boddington's: most international beers are available here if you know which bars/liquor stores to frequent. Guest Anorak Report post Posted June 24, 2003 Dr Tom: Doh! You missed my main point. Read the thread from the beginning, read your first post (carefully), read the first 18 words of my reply (I counted them out just for you) and get back to me. PS. Don't steal my lines!! Marney: I'd be very upset if you thought I held a 'long-standing hatred' against you. You're one of the funniest people at TSM the God gimmick is a stroke of genius. Seeing as this must be about my second ever post directly responding to you ('long-standing hatred'=Get it?) I guess i'm your sworn enemy for life now huh? I'm torn between advising you to get over yourself or worrying about your state of mind (honestly NOT a cheap end-joke there BTW).
Guest EricMM Report post Posted June 25, 2003 Anorak can't you take a little confidence? Just because Marney or anyone else is wrong about some things doesn't mean they have to second guess themselves by being humble about what they say. She feels that there are very few traditional French values that are particularly valueable (sp); so she says so, and defends it, offering evidence to back up her statements, as did Spicy. How about instead of saying, "OOOH you're being stupid!" you say "No, here's why the French are admirable people." Try doing that. I wouldn't want to, but you know, try that. I guess they make good whine. *cough*
Guest JMA Report post Posted June 25, 2003 Is cheese a known commodity in France? Yes. But it also is here, in America. Do the French eat said cheese? Some of them. Have the French been known to surrender in major wars? Ever hear of Napoleon or Joan of Arc? I rest my case. Regardless, I could less about what France did in WWII. It was a LONG time ago. That would be like blaming Americans today for segregation or Joe McCarthy's witch-hunt. In other words: idiotic. It seems to be tolerated on the board if you insult the French. But if you insulted someone else (like the Irish or Italians) you would be banned pretty fast. It's a double standard.
