It seems to be tolerated on the board if you insult the French. But if you insulted someone else (like the Irish or Italians) you would be banned pretty fast.

The Irish are all belligerent illiterate drunks who don't even have the intelligence to farm potatoes efficiently and the Italians run around on little scooters going "Ciao."

Let's see how long it takes for me to be banned.

This should be interesting.

Unless we've suddenly had a moratorium on Eddie Izzard material, I wouldn't hold my breath.

They are being slow banning me i guess. I insulted America earlier in this thread. I should have been gone last night.

And damnit Marney don't insult the Italians. Sure they may be a bunch greaseballs who's greatest claim to fame is a damned video game plumber, but their pizza is the BOMB!

Bah. As any Italian will tell you, their pizza bears no resemblance to American pizza - which is the true apotheosis of the culinary form. They may have invented it, but we improved it and perfected it. We came up with the thin crust double pepperoni Domino's, and there is nothing on the face of the earth that can compare.

As for Mario, fine. I'll give you that one. Italian people don't really drive around on little scooters, going "Ciao;" they actually spend all their lives jumping on top of the heads of cartoon caricatures of dumb Japanese myths and whacking their skulls repeatedly against big shiny bricks. So now you know.

Fair enough. Allow me to retract my previous, misworded statement and say don't hate Italians since they invented pizza.

Yes, that should do well enough to cover my ass.......

Dr Tom: Doh! You missed my main point. Read the thread from the beginning, read your first post (carefully), read the first 18 words of my reply...

I read them the first time. I was well aware of that then, and I have been the entire time since. However, several people chose to sob into their pillows about what they perceive as legitimate hate for the French, and that's what I was going after.

(I counted them out just for you)

I'm flattered. Keep your shoes and socks on next time, and I'll be impressed, too.

Well, the poll itself seems to have died down. 35.29% believe that there is a prejudice against France and its people. 64.71% believe that all jokes and insults made about France are not serious and just for laughs. Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote and comment (regardless of which of the two choices you picked). The polling isn't closed or anything, but it looks unlikely a major shift in dominance will occur.

And I'd be willing to bet that voting was done back before page one was. The rest of the time spent here is basically a spoof on the ridiculous concept of this thread.

I don't think it was a ridiculous concept at all. I'm sorry you find my thread to be "ridiculous," but I can't change that. I'm actually rather pleased with how it came out.

Ok then. Carry on.

No, I wanted to have a poll about the subject. That's all. I could really care less about the jokes. That's not important to me.

Correct. And those who support them. It's a hatred of an attitude and a way of thinking that is and historically has been characteristic of the French people; it's not based in ethnicity.

So, uh, why can't you just say "I hate the French govt." instead of "I hate the French."? They're two very seperate things- "French" doesn't imply the government, it implies the ethniticy, in my view.

Anyway....I supported the French government and the beginning of all this Iraq nonsense, so I find no reason to hate them. And no, I'm not French.

Oh, I hate the French government too. But the French people support the French government to an overwhelming degree, and so I hate them separately.

Once again- YOU ARE MAKING A BLANKET STATEMENT, AN ASSUMPTION- WHICH IS A PREJUDICE.

Have you gone out and polled every single person of French ethnicity and asked them if they like the French government?

No?

Then kindly shut up.

OH MY GOD I'M PREJUDICED AGAINST PEOPLE WHO'RE PREJUDICED AGAINST MY COUNTRY

CALL THE THOUGHT POLICE CALL THEM NOW!

Reuters News Service

PARIS - Public support for French President Jacques Chirac's stout opposition to a U.S.-led war in Iraq climbed to 92 percent in a poll published on Friday.

The IFOP poll for Le Figaro daily newspaper compared to 86 percent who backed the veteran leader in a separate poll released on Monday, before the conflict started.

IFOP, which interviewed 1,003 people on Thursday, day of the first U.S. military strikes against Iraqi targets, said 87 percent of those polled opposed the use of force.

Sixty-two percent of those polled said they believed France's position on the international stage had been boosted as a result of its stance on the crisis.

France led efforts to block a second U.N. Security Council resolution authorising force against Iraq, to the fury of Washington and its allies.

Almost half of those quizzed by IFOP said they believed the main goal of the U.S.-led war was to take control of Iraq's oil fields. Another 17 percent said Washington was seeking to impose U.S. domination on the Middle East.

Only three percent said they thought the goal was to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, the main U.S. justification for the war. Baghdad says it does not possess such weapons.

- Houston Chronicle

92%? I think that's enough for me to make a credible blanket statement.

It doesn't matter if it's 99.9%. Still making a prejudice statement.

You can be prejudice against anything you want, but it still doesn't make you (or any of these other anti-French idiots) better than any KKK member, which is what I'm trying to get at here.

Say you hate the French government and people who support it. FINE. But saying "I hate the French." is no different than saying "I hate black people." or "I hate Mexican people."

And also- "prejudiced against your country"? No. The correct term would be that they don't like the current American government. Neither do I. It's not like they said "All Americans are greedy bastards, I hate them all." Them saying they don't like the American govt. is no worse than you saying you don't like the French one- the difference is, you're also saying "I hate the French." I don't see a French person saying "I hate Americans."

You're a fucking moron. I don't care about ethnicity. When I say I hate the French, that means the French. The FRENCH. The French in France. The French who support Chirac and his peevish, spiteful, dishonest anti-Americanism. This is how the word "French" is understood. If I were to say that Africans are responsible for turning Africa into a complete cesspool of human misery, would you understand that to mean every single person across the world of African descent? How about a half-white girl with slightly frizzy hair? No? Then kindly shut up.

Read what I edited in. You're acting like they're making statements like "All Americans are devil bastards!"- they're just saying they don't agree with the American government. What the FUCK is wrong with that?

And once again- even if you're talking about the people of the country, not all of the people of that country believe that. You said it yourself- 92% (and that's probably an inflated number, as I don't exactly trust the media).

Still, I find it kind of funny that you hate the French because they don't agree with the American government. Do you also hate any Americans who take part in anti-war protests, or the 1 out of every 3 Americans who disagreed with the war in Iraq?

Yes, there are French people who think that way. And they are no better than you are.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL THE FRENCH.

Apparently you're changing your story, fine. Now you hate the French because some of them allegedly claim to hate Americans, rather than because their government disagrees with ours.

Well, that'd be like a black person hating America because the KKK are a part of it.

I'd drop the KKK line if I were you. Seriously, I'm "[no] better than any KKK member?" Hilarious. You're aware that the KKK hates people based on who they are, on the colour of their skin, rather than what they do? Most ethnically French people have the same colour skin I do. If the French didn't have a history of shameful cowardice, ungrateful freeloading, and petty backbiting, a history to which they have been absolutely faithful in the last few months, I wouldn't have a problem with them. However, they do, and it isn't unreasonable or bigoted at all to despise them as a direct result of their statements and their actions.

And no, I'm not "changing [my] story." I couldn't care less about their trivial professed dislike of the United States. I take it as a sign we're doing something right.

Ah, so you change your story again. Now you hate the French people because they have "a history of shameful cowardice, ungrateful freeloading, and petty backbiting"! Wow.

I suppose a man or woman born to French parents is born with some sort of genetic code that makes them a shameful coward, ungreateful freeloader, and a petty backbiter!

Once again, that's called "prejudice" my unintelligent friend.

And geez, I guess we're pretending the French never helped us in the war for our independance against Britian, right? I wasn't going to bring that up, but since you changed your reason for your hate yet again, it's now relevant.

This is about to get very ugly...

Anyway, I do agree that it is wrong to hate the French people in general. Saying you hate the French people means you are grouping individuals of a country together and judging them all together. This, to me, is prejudice. Like I've said before, I can understand hating their goverment, but not the people. And I'd be willing to say that the French would have a MUCH better view of the US if we weren't always making them the butts of our jokes.

Hating the French people would make a person no better than the people who hate America. The way I see it, if someone hates French people in general, they can't accurately judge an individual French person. There is a very thin line between joking and hate.

Nothing's changed. Not since post one. You're simply misinterpreting what I've stated clearly, time and again, in yet a different way. Once more you're attempting to cast my contempt for the French in a genetic light. Sorry, it's not working, and it isn't going to work.

Let's give an example using your logic- some Christians a long time ago in Salem were judgemental murderers who burned alleged witches at the stake.

Therefore, under your logic, it's a-ok to say ALL Christians are judgemental murderers!

And so you're not doing it genetically, great. Prejudice doesn't have to be based on ethnicity- believing something about the residents of an entire country is prejudice too. Isn't that what you're accusing French of?
